Nutritional and Antioxidant Properties of Moringa oleifera Leaves in Functional Foods

Moringa oleifera is a tree cultivated originally in northern India, whose ancient use as a medicine has demonstrated its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Due to its richness in minerals and macronutrients, the antioxidant capacity and the mineral bioaccesibility were assessed. In addition, the chemical composition, amino acid, fatty acid, and mineral content were also evaluated. The performed analysis reported a high content of proteins and low content of lipids in the chemical composition. Regarding the mineral content, Ca and Fe presented high bioaccessibility; K, S, Ca, and Fe being the most concentrated elements. The obtained values using FRAP, ABTS, and ORAC methods showed high antioxidant capacity, directly related to the increased content of phenolic compounds. Nutritional and functional properties of Moringa oleifera

This study was carried out to evaluate the nutrient composition and functional properties of dried Moringa oleifera leaves collected from two different ecological zones in Bangladesh, Joypurhat and Mymensingh. The proximate analysis revealed that M. oleifera leaves were rich in protein content, ranging from (22.99e29.36%), and low in fat, from (4.03e9.51%), fiber, from (6.00e9.60%), and ash, from (8.05e10.38%). The vitamin C content of fresh M. oleifera leaves ranged from (187.96e278.50 mg/100 g), Ca ranged from (1.322e2.645%), P ranged from (0.152e0.304 g/100 g), and K ranged from (1.317e2.025 g/ 100 g). The functional properties included WAC (158.00e415.00%), FC (28.30e117.65 mL/l) and FS (333.33 e1000 mL/l). Together, these findings indicate that M. oleifera leaves are rich in vital phytonutrients, suggesting a promising balance of food ingredients for human and animal diets.

Moringa oleifera is a famous magical tree or tree of life. It is a rapidly growing famine hence widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical areas. Ethnomedicinal and traditional uses of Moringa signify that this plant might have an immense therapeutic efficacy against most human ailments. It has a vast range of medicinal uses with great nutritional value. In the indigenous system of medicine, various parts of this plant are being occupied for the treatment of different diseases. The leaves are a huge source of vitamins (especially vitamins A, B, and C), minerals (calcium, iron), and protein and other essential phytochemicals, Extracts from the leaves are used to treat malnutrition and enhance breast milk in lactating mothers. It implicit as an antioxidant, anticancer, antiinflammatory, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial agent. Most of the recent studies suggested that Moringa should be used as a functional ingredient in food. This review spotlights on the pharmacogenetic investigation, pharmacological activity, and the various formulations available in the market to increase awareness among people about this magic plant furthermore, nutraceutical formulations develop consequently large-scale population relish the nutritional benefits of this plant. Additionally, it examines the plant's traditional uses in different cultures and its emerging role in modern medicine and the nutraceutical industry.

Moringa oleifera, a perennial tree of Indian origin, is cultivated in several tropical and sub-tropical countries because of its ability to grow under unfavourable conditions such as poor soil, lower requirement of water and managemental practices. BACKGROUND: Moringa is a tree of a not well-understood plant since it has not been fully studied all over the world. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the chemical as well as functional properties of the Egyptian Moringa oleifera leaves. Such leaves can be used as a functional food ingredient in the food and pharmaceutical applications. RESULTS: The proximate analysis showed that moringa leaves are rich in: fiber, protein, carbohydrate and energy contents (11.23±0.16, 9.38±0.23, 56.33±0.27 g.100g-1 and 332.68±0.06 KCal, respectively). Moringa is a good source for essential amino acids especially Lysine (69.13±0.13mg.100g-1), essential minerals such as Na (289.34±0.35), K (33.63±0.24), Mg (25.64±0.25) Ca (486.23±0.11), P (105.23±0.32) and Fe (9.45±0.16) mg.100g -1 respectively and vitamins (A=13.48±0.51, B1=0.05±0.28, B2= 0.8±0.25, B3= 220±0.42, C= 245.13±0.46 and E= 16.80±0.24 mg.100g respectively). It is appeared using HPLC that methanol 70% is the most suitable solvent for extraction of phenolic compounds from moringa leaves (. Scavenging activity results confirmed that Moringa leaves extract might be a potent source of natural antioxidants with a high human health benefits. Antimicrobial activity results indicate that Moringa leaves extracts may be used as an antimicrobial agent with reasonable safety margins to inhibit bacterial growth in pharmaceutical and food applications. CONCLUSION: Moringa is considered as a nutrient-rich plant especially in its leaves. Such leaves might be used to combat malnutrition, especially among infants and nursing mothers.

Moringa oleifera Lam belonging to family Moringaceae is a plant with high nutritional and medicinal value. The plant is native to India; however, it is now spread to the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The genus consists of 13 species and they are being cultivated in Asia, Africa and another part of the world for the multiple uses. Different part of the plants is a rich source of protein, lipid, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamin and minerals. Hence, it is used as dietary supplements in the tropics as a nutrient source where malnutrition is a major concern, especially in children and infants. Seeds of the plant have coagulant and bio sorbent property which allows it to be used in purifying water quality and reduce the microbial load. The present review highlights information regarding the traditional uses, phytoconstituents, pharmacological attributes viz., antioxidant, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective etc. and toxicological aspects of M. oleifera species in order to explore further their therapeutic potential and assess future research dimensions.
