The Role and Impact of Mass Tourism: A Study on the Mass Tourist Spots at Dhaka, Sylhet and Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh

The term "mass tourism" is popular right now. As tourism becomes more and more popular, a great majority of people choose to travel to some popular location, which is known as mass tourism. It is the most popular type of tourism because it is the most affordable and comes with a package. Finding the effects of mass tourism on the natural environment of Bangladesh and tourist destinations is the primary goal of this paper. The term "mass tourism" refers to two basic characteristics: (a) the involvement of enormous numbers of people in tourism; and (b) the standardization, rigid packaging, and inflexibility of the vacation. During the coming ten years, it's anticipated that both the number of foreign visitors and the phenomena of mass tourism would increase. Tourism's advantages and disadvantages might be assessed at the national, regional, or local levels. A social cost-benefit analysis is the best course of action in every situation. Such a strategy takes into account both paid and unpaid benefits, costs, and side effects. The creation of revenue and jobs is one of mass tourism's main advantages. The definition of mass tourism is highlighted in the paper's introduction. We listed a few primary aims as well as some secondary purposes in the objective sections. Through the application of Semi-structured face-to-face interviews and telephone interviews which are were conducted with various employee of hotel analyzes this study to get the ultimate role of mass tourism and the development of popular destination in Bangladesh. We highlighted the researchers' earlier results about mass tourism in the literature review. We used qualitative data to conduct this research report. In the analysis section, we discussed some popular tourist destinations in Bangladesh, the financial effects of mass tourism, its effects on the gross domestic product, some unfavorable aspects of mass tourism, economic, social, environmental aspects and a profound SWOT analysis of mass tourism. Mainly tourism destinations in Bangladesh need proper guidelines and management to standardize the destination toward mass tourism. Finally, we offer a few suggestions for boosting mass tourism in Bangladesh.

Social Responsibility for Tourism Development in Bangladesh

Tourism is considered as an important contributor to economic growth, job creation and social upliftment. At the same time there is a negative side to the "balance sheet". Uncontrolled conventional tourism (mass tourism) poses potential threats in the form of depletion of natural resources, increase in pollution level, ecological imbalance and social aggression. To prevent or minimize the negative impact of tourism, it is vital to control the acts of human beings through appropriate laws. There are a few numbers of tourism laws in Bangladesh. Also, there are some other environment protection laws, regulations, policies and strategies covering tourism issues. Bu no law gives specific guidelines to handling negative socioeconomic impacts of tourism; or to slowing down the environmental and ecological degradation because of tourism. Tourism itself cannot do harm to the environment, the human beings are rather responsible for that. In order to minimize it, the local grass-root level stakeholders will be best actors to train the tourists to take care of the ecology, environment and biodiversity of that destination. Creation of Destination Management Organization (DMO) in the tourist destinations has become important tool towards this end. Creation of CBT and DMOs could be started immediately by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism (Mo CAT) in popular and over crowded tourist destinations of the country. Related ministries, tourism practioners, academicians and the local stakeholders could be involved in this process. The study suggested a framework for Sustainable Responsible Tourism is needed for tourism policy implication. Tourism policy development is not an isolated planning process.

Study on Factors Influencing Tourism: Way Forward for Sustainable Tourism in Bangladesh

This paper was discussed about the factors affecting and or influencing tourism in Bangladesh highlighting interaction between biotic and abiotic factors that should be taken into consideration. Construction works including infrastructure development, visitors trespass, damages of natural regeneration, disturbance of wildlife breeding, waste disposal, visitor's behavior and attitude towards the nature and wildlife. On the other hand travel transports including water transport are causing serious problems to the tourism environment. Oil spill of the water transports in the sea and river also causing severe problems to the marine and aquatic ecosystem. Unwanted sounds, noise pollution created by the visitors are also severe threat for tourism. There is an urgent need to develop community through motivation, training and building their capacity to participate in the sustainable tourism activities. Every tour operator need to be organized pre tour training for common understanding on sustainable tourism and how to behave with the nature, wildlife, plants, disposal of wastes in the right places, limit the sound, take care about the natural regeneration avoiding damages. This may create awareness among the mass people and will helpful for sustainable tourism. Sustainable tourism possesses intrinsic values of economic development, environmental considerations and social flow towards the sustainability.

An Overview of Present Status and Future Prospects of the Tourism Sector in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is bestowed with beautiful coasts and beaches, archeological sites, historical and religious places, hills and islands, forests and jungles and attractive countryside with innumerable water bodies and green fields of agriculture. These rich natural and cultural attractions are valuable ingredients for tourism development in Bangladesh. Every year, a large number of tourists visit these attractive places, which has a significant contribution in the national economy. However, tourism industry in Bangladesh is faced with many problems, such as lack of good transportation and communication system, lack of well planned accommodation, food, entertainment and other services to satisfy diverse categories of tourists. The issue of safety and security of the tourists of both domestic and foreign origins is also very important for the development of tourism in Bangladesh. Though a policy has been adopted in the recent time for ensuring sustainable development of this sector, the strategies adopted under the policy are not yet being seriously taken up for implementation. Besides, the country requires a strong physical planning strategy to develop its urban and rural areas, and national transportation and communication system to establish connectivity to the tourism spots. There should be a strong marketing policy as well for the promotion of tourism in the country. Thus if necessary policies, strategies and actions are taken by the national government, tourism may become a potential economic sector.

Tourism: An Overview

In modern world ‘Tourism’ has become a popular global leisure activity. It can be domestic or international, and international tourism has both incoming and outgoing implications on a country's balance of payments. Today, tourism is a major source of income for many countries, and affects the economy of both the source and host countries. People love to travel, so much so that in 2014 over 1.1 billion people crossed the world by air, land and sea. Tourism has become a booming global business and we all can benefit from it. However, the planet is fragile and it’s essential to understand that least possible harm must be done to the natural environment, valuing and protecting the local culture. Tourism allows wealth to be injected into a community in a variety of ways. The great benefit of this industry is that it’s extremely labour intensive, and many of the businesses that operate within it are only small businesses and micro operators. It’s also great for individual travelers, because with a booming tourism industry there are lots to do, plenty of places to stay, and as a result more and more tourists are drawn in. Though ‘Bangladesh is endowed with enchanting scenic beauty, mighty rivers, sun beaches, historical relics and colourful tribal life’ yet, even after 44 years of independence, tourism in this country didn’t develop as expected. Potentials are still ajar and Bangladesh can reap the benefit of world-wide development of tourism as a fast-growing industry.

An Evaluative Study on Tourism in Bangladesh

Tourism is one of the most promising sectors for Bangladesh with her huge natural beauty, heroic historical background and archaeological resources. This research has identified whether the contribution of this sector is significant to total GDP of Bangladesh and its future prospects as research problem. It has served the objectives of assessing different aspects of tourism with point to point analysis. Secondary data supplied by Bangladesh Economic Review 2010, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation and World Travel & Tourism Council have been analyzed with some simple statistical tools. Recommendations are made for development of infrastructures, diversifications of tourism form and establishment of Public Private Partnership (PPP) in tourism sector.

Economic Contribution of Sustainable Tourism Development in Bangladesh

The current research paper examines the tourist exports and arrivals, thus the foreign exchange income and expenditure of Bangladesh. Inbound tourist and foreign currency earnings are very few in Bangladesh. Tourism business in Bangladesh is almost new and mainly depended on domestic tourists. Foreign tourists require far better service than that of domestic tourist. To reach a meaningful conclusion of the study is quantitative in nature but descriptive in style. Both primary and secondary sources of data have been used. Researcher conducted field survey through structure questioner and informal discussion. Secondary data have collected from the publication of Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB), National Tourism Organizations (NTOs), Non Government Organizations (NGOs), Statistical Year Book of Bangladesh, UNWTO, WTTC, World Bank, Asia Pacific Tourism Forecast (APTF), World Tourism Barometer-UNWTO and other tourism related publications. The earnings from tourism exports were BDT 11.1bn in 2016. The number of tourist forecasted to 23.9bn in 2027, which will be generated BDT 25.64bn. The contribution of tourism exports of Bangladesh is not satisfactory. The highest value of tourist exports over the last 10 years was 0.73% of total export in 2005, which requires less expenditure but higher foreign currency earnings. The direct contribution of travel and tourism to GDP of Bangladesh was 2.2% of total GDP in 2016. Capital investment scenario of the tourism sector of Bangladesh is optimistic which was 72.5bn in 2016. It is forecasted to raise by 9.5% over the next 10 years and amount will be BDT 201.8bn in 2027. This Study principally analyzed the economic contributions of travel and tourism in Bangladesh. In recent years the economic contribution from tourism export is not satisfactory but it is increasing year to year which is a positive trend for sustainable economic development of tourism sector of Bangladesh. Bangladesh government authorities have identified tourism as a means of generating employment and foreign currency. The economic significance of tourism varies from country to country. Bangladesh tourism industry with its enormous potentials is striving to reach at a satisfactory level in order to play the expected role in the economy of the country. As a major sector of the services economy, tourism is increasingly recognized as giving economic and social advancement for the destinations countries and local residents to reduce unemployment through creating jobs in this sector directly and indirectly. Tourist exports or currency spent of tourists from foreign counties to Bangladesh can be the main cash cow of immediate benefaction for this country from the tourism sector. Although the world tourism businesses are booming and almost imperceptibly it has become single fastest growing sector industries in the world.
