Income Risk and the Decision on Onion Farming
SOCA: Jurnal Sosial, Ekonomi Pertanian
The onion cultivation often faced various risks caused by many factors, so farmers need to make the right decision to start onion cultivation by paying attention to these risks. Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of 1) analyzing the income risk faced by farmers in developing onion farming, 2) knowing the factors that affect the farming risk, 3) knowing the factors that influence farmers' decisions in planting onion. The research was conducted in Purworejo Village for 4 months with 30 onion farmers as the sample. To analyze the income risk faced by farmers in developing onion farming, it was done by calculating the coefficient of variation (CV). Minimum income was calculated by the residual formula of the squared income function and to determine the factors that influence farming income and farmers' decisions in planting onion, multiple linear regression analysis was performed. The research showed that the risk of onion farming income was quite high, reached ...

Findings further revealed that farm size between 1-2hectares was 80.9%, access of extension service was 80% and farming experience mean were 8.4 years. The total cost per hectare of onion was ₦12860.34 while the average revenue ₦332,223.26 with a gross margin of ₦309,691.10 and a gross margin per hectare of ₦274,062.94, Return/₦ Invested was ₦ 21.31. This therefore established that onion selling is a profitable venture in the study area. The constraints identified were lack of proper information, high cost of farm inputs, and lack of capital, processing /storage facilities, market Policies instability, inadequate extension service, flood, inadequate land acquisition and poor rural infrastructure. Farmers should form supporting unit for the purpose of self-help in terms of input achievement and output.
Selected Economic Indices for the Viability of Onion Production in Benin Republic
Journal of Agribusiness and Rural Development
This study estimated the profitability and the level of technical efficiency of the onion farms. It also identified factors that contribute to technical efficiency in onion production. Data were collected from 180 randomly selected onion farms using a pretested interview schedule. Partial budgeting techniques and the stochastic production frontier were modeled for data analysis. Profitability indices revealed a value of 0.771 and 0.280 for operating ratio and return to capital invested respectively. The mean technical efficiency score for the farms was 88.35%. Quantities of water and onion seedlings, farm size, household size, and farming experience significantly affected the technical efficiency of the farms. The study concluded that onion production was profitable in the study area. The government should look into the possibility of providing an alternative source of irrigation for the farmers to conserve water and lower the cost of irrigation.
Risk Behavior of Onion Farmers in the District Enrekang
Sebelas Maret Business Review, 2018
This study aimed to analyze the risk behavior of onion farmers in District Enrekang. A random sample of 75 onion farmers was selected for interviews. Vegetable Crops: Risks and Losses Faced by Farmers
Artificial Intelligence Review, 2018
Farming activities take place in a highly variable biophysical and economic environment which poses numerous types of risks. Risk perception plays a key role in the production as well as investment behavior of farmers. But limited attention has been paid to understand its nature in cashcrop farming such as fruits and vegetables. To get the deeper understanding of the major factors constraining production of vegetables, an analysis of the farmers' perception on various risk factors in vegetables is carried out. There are different types of the risks and uncertainties involved in different vegetable crops. The present study describes some of the factors constituting uncertainties that limit the farm production and productivity. The study is focused on the various risk factors that are highly worried by the sample population and highlights the losses caused by these factors which are involved in different vegetable crops. The study is conducted in Haryana state. The study also highlights the loss bearing capacity of the respondents and concludes that there is a great difference between the actual average losses experienced by the farmers and loss bearing capacity of the farmers. The study also gives suggestion to make stronger the economy of the farmers, all types of risks and crops should be covered under the insurance policies formulated by the government at present or in the future. Effective measures should be taken to properly manage the risks faced by the farmers.

In Ethiopia, vegetable crops are produced in different agro-ecological zones through commercial as well as smallholder farmers both as a source of income and food. However, due to perishable nature and biological nature of production process, vegetables productions are risky investment activities. In this context, risk perceptions play a key role in the production and investment behaviour of farmers in vegetable production decisions. However, in Kombolcha Woreda, only limited attention has been paid to understand the producers' risk perceptions in vegetable production. Therefore, in this study, analysis of the major sources of risks in vegetable production, on the basis of farmers' perceptions, was conducted. For the study, a two-stage sampling technique was used to select 130 sample households from six sample kebeles. Primary data collected through structured questionnaire and secondary data sources were used. A Likert scale, based on farmers' perception, was used to rank the various sources of vegetable production risks. The mean scores results, derived based on Likert scales, indicated that production and market risks were perceived to be the most important risk sources. Hence, price support mechanisms and inputs subsidy, education and training on formal risk management mechanisms (production contract, marketing contract, etc.); drought tolerant, and pest/disease resistant vegetable varieties and cultural and biological methods, and chemicals should be used to control such risks.
Agribusiness Risk Management in Nigeria -A Conceptual Analysis
Texila International Journal of Management, 2024
The paper examines agribusiness risk management in Nigeria and discusses its role in transforming food production practices to attain food security and sustainable economic development. Risk is inherent in all the segments of the agricultural value chain. It is the responsibility of farmers to manage the adverse consequences of taking risks involved in food production, while financial institutions, governments, and donor agencies in developing nations play notable roles in ameliorating disasters considered beyond the control of the farmer. The reward for investing in agricultural business and bearing the risk is profit. The paper analysed the concept of agribusiness, various risks inherent in food production and ways to manage them effectively. It is recommended that the stakeholders in risk management, such as the farmer/producer, government, financial institutions, and donor agencies prevalent in developing nations, must work assiduously to identify, mitigate, transfer or cope with the risks in agribusiness to ensure food security in the country.

Risk Perception and Management in Smallholder Vegetable Farming in Eastern Ethiopia
Journal of Natural Sciences Research, 2020
This study examines vegetable producing farmers' risk perception and management strategies. Using survey data collected from 385 smallholder vegetable farmers from East Hararghe zone of Oromia region of Ethiopia, descriptive statistics and factor analysis were used for analyzing farmers risk attitude, classifying risk sources and management strategies. The analysis of risk attitude indicated that the majority of vegetable farmers considered themselves to be risk-takers towards important farm decisions which would help in the adoption of risk management strategies. The result of factor analysis identified low profitability, energy inaccessibility, production, price variability, human / social and institutional factors as principal sources of risk. Moreover, factor analysis also identified production management, loss minimizing and diversification as risk management strategies adopted by smallholder vegetable farmers. Policy makers should focus on enhancing the profitability of smallholder vegetable farmers, stabilizing input and output price, managing production risk, expanding energy access and facilitating the provision of necessary farm inputs. Moreover, it is also necessary to make the operation of cooperatives/unions accountable and their input provision fair and efficient.
