Human fatigue is reduced working capability for certain period of time as the result of unusual or prolonged workload. Fatigue arises when the body’s energy requirements exceed its supply. Fatigue first manifests as reduced concentration capability causing movement coordination and precision disruption leading to decreasing workability. Fatigue is an object of research in physiology, psychology, work ergonomics, medicine, and biotechnology where each domain has a focus on mental fatigue. The functional state in the context of professional activity is defined as a complex of characteristics of functions and qualities that determine the fulfilment of labour activity. Mental Fatigue is a major problem of our society, as it is the cause of many health problems and huge economic losses. Mental fatigue is the result of brain over-functioning and reaching its potential level depending upon the individuals. It can happen when you exert too much mental effort on a project or task. Analysis shows that mental fatigue leads to an inability to concentrate and a rise in easy mistakes. Unchecked, mental fatigue results in feeling stressed, irritated that you simply cannot sustain and even depressed. Washed-out employees will place themselves or others in danger, thus it is important for safety managers and supervisors to grasp the signs of fatigue. So, a robust system is needed which can detect mental fatigue and reduce the chance of mistakes and accidents. The current system identifies the blink behavior that will help in detecting mental fatigue. Our model detects the mental fatigue based on natural viewing situations where an individual will be asked some set of questions and mental fatigue tracking will be done simultaneously. In our model, we tried to make it very compact and portable. Here we have used two unique feature (i) instead of using any eye tracking technology, we are using a simple webcam to track the data from individual's eye (ii)Our project initially takes answers of a set of questions which are based on psychological behavior which will analyze the mental conditions of the subject. Haar cascade algorithms are employed for the blinking behavior where eye blinks are counted per minute so as to search out the fatigue level.. The advantage of our model is its simplicity, price effectiveness and portability.

Fatigue Detection Caused by Office Work with the Use of EOG Signal

Although the psychophysiological signs of fatigue are well known, automatic methods for the detection of fatigue in employees in specific working conditions are still lacking. Many people do repetitive work on computers and become fatigued; therefore, the detection of fatigue in employees can help prevent accidents and increase their work efficiency. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for the effective detection of fatigue which is based only on electrooculographic (EOG) signal. Three features were assessed: blink duration, blink amplitude, and time between blinks. To cause fatigue, the N-back test, lasting for 60 minutes, was carried out. The article presents the research results for 24 users. The effectiveness of the proposed system was measured by the accuracy of classification. The average classification accuracy was 0.93 for user-dependent mode and 0.89 for user-independent mode. The results of the conducted experiments indicated that assessing the three proposed features can help in the effective detection of fatigue in users.

Fatigue detection through physiological assessment during real-life occupational situations: Preliminary results

Background: Fatigue is a significant health and safety-related problem among workers. In general, it decreases performance and physical strength, causing incidents and accidents in operational situations. During military activities, soldiers often encounter severe conditions, which combined lead to fatigue manifestations affecting their health and performance. Continuous monitoring of their overall health status would prevent its adverse effects. Defining and Measuring Fatigue

In response to a long history of problems with defining and measuring fatigue, the University of Kansas School of Nursing established a Center for Biobehavioral Studies of Fatigue Management to facilitate the study of fatigue in diverse populations. The purpose of this article is to review past efforts to define and measure fatigue and the conceptual problems relevant to currently used measures of fatigue. Several distinct characteristics and corresponding measures of fatigue are identified and a definition and framework for the study of fatigue are discussed. Future research on fatigue must attend to the conceptual distinctions among various measures and the measures of fatigue most appropriate to the goals of a study.
