Building Information Modeling (BIM) Application in Malaysian Construction Industry

Bu ilding Informat ion Modeling (BIM) is a set of digital tools that can manage construction projects effectiveness. BIM has been used by the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industries in Malaysia. The idea to imp lement BIM in Malaysia was introduced by the Director of Public Works Depart ment (PWD) in 2007. The aim of this paper is to exp lore BIM imp lementation in Malaysian construction industry. A literature review was done to exp lore previous BIM studies on definitions and history of BIM, construction issues, application of BIM and BIM tools in construction projects as well as benefits of BIM. Malaysian government encourages construction players to apply BIM to construction projects because it can overcome construction project problems such as delay, clash of design by different professionals and construction cost overrun. Autodesk tools have been suggested by the government as a BIM tool platform. Other tools include Revit Architecture, Revit St ructural, Revit M EP, Navisworks and Cost-X. It is crucial for construction players to be aware of the importance of BIM applicat ion in construction projects. This is because BIM can be one of the conditions required of a co mpany to qualify for government and private projects, similar to what is practiced in some other countries. Moreover, BIM helps to increase construction project efficiency and effectiveness. It can also be imp lemented to improve commun ication and collaboration between construction players. The implementation of BIM technology is expected to become mo re widespread in Malaysian construction industry because of the government's effo rts in pro moting BIM .

Implementation of Building Information Modeling in Malaysian Construction Industry

This study has assessed the implementation level of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the construction industry of Malaysia. It also investigated several computer software packages facilitating BIM and challenges affecting its implementation. Data collection for this study was carried out using questionnaire survey among the construction practitioners. 95 completed forms of questionnaire received against 150 distributed questionnaire sets from consultant, contractor and client organizations were analyzed statistically. Analysis findings indicated that the level of implementation of BIM in the construction industry of Malaysia is very low. Average index method employed to assess the effectiveness of various software packages of BIM highlighted that Bentley construction, AutoCAD and ArchiCAD are three most popular and effective software packages. Major challenges to BIM implementation are it requires enhanced collaboration, add work to a designer, interoperability and needs enhanced collaboration. For improving the level of implementing BIM in Malaysian industry, it is recommended that a flexible training program of BIM for all practitioners must be created.

Investigating the Potential and Benefits of Using Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the Life Cycle of Construction Projects

International Journal of Applied Arts Studies, 2024

The construction industry is one of the broad, decentralized and highly indigenous industries of any country and in many countries, it is considered an indicator for growth and development or economic stagnation. This industry in Iran is currently experiencing a lot of inefficiency, one of the main reasons for which is the lack of growth in the technical field. The use of traditional methods is known as one of the main factors inhibiting productivity in the construction industry in Iran, because most of the traditional methods and their nature lead to time delays and waste of resources. Therefore, it is necessary to use new technologies in this important and vital industry. The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology in construction projects is very important, including the benefits of using BIM, improving coordination and communication, increasing productivity, reducing errors, improving construction quality, etc. Therefore, in this research, the benefits of using this useful technology in the life cycle of a construction project have been investigated.

Buildning Information Modeling and Construction Management

Like every industrial sector building development sector also needs a prototype before going on construction. Building or every type of construction job is new and more challenging with new difficulties. The prototype is the best solution for this kind of challenging work. BIM or Building information modeling first create a opportunity in building sectors to make such kind of prototype for forecasting construction stages.

Study on Implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) Industry (AEC)

Proceedings of the 4th Vocational Education International Conference (VEIC 2022), 2022

Technical requirements regarding sustainable development guidelines, especially for the building sector, have been implemented based on Law no. 28 of 2002 concerning Buildings, Government Regulation no. 16 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Law no. 28 of 2002 and Regulation of the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing No. 9 of 2021 concerning Guidelines for Sustainable Development. This research is initial research as a form of response to the legislation in the AEC industry which is still very new in Indonesia. The type of research used is survey research. The population and sample are the parties involved in the AEC industry, especially in the process of procuring goods and services in Indonesia. This research is to obtain a critical study of the expectations and constraints faced by consultants, contractors and planning consultants who specifically are the individuals involved in it, such as architects, site engineers, drafters, construction management consultants and others. The data collection technique was carried out using a questionnaire technique distributed through the google-form platform. The results show that the implementation of BIM in the Indonesian AEC industry is still in the low category. The low level of BIM implementation can be seen from indicators such as the type of BIM-based software which shows that more than 40% have never used BIM-based software. The implementation of BIM in Indonesia still revolves around 3D modelling problems (30%). The implementation of BIM in Indonesia has not been developed to solve problems such as budget planning analysis (37.8%), construction implementation management (53.4%), energy analysis (86.6%), infrastructure management (71.1%). The conclusion of this study is that the problems of BIM implementation in Indonesia in response to the enactment of legislation are still very open and challenging, such as the adequacy of BIM experts, compatibility and availability of BIM-based hardware and software, both in terms of quantity and quality.

A review of BIM (Building Information Modeling) implementation in Indonesia construction industry

IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2018

Construction projects in Indonesia have been growing rapidly in the last three years. Therefore, construction management is very important to ensure completion of construction projects are within schedule and budget. Utilization of building information modeling (BIM) can increase the efficiency of a construction project. However, the implementation of BIM in Indonesia is still not known. This paper is intended to review the implementation of BIM in Indonesia through literature analysis. To find BIM articles in Indonesia, Firstly, searching was limited to English articles published in reputed journals or conferences. However the results were limited, then the search was expanded to the article using Indonesian languages that published in journal and conference. Based on the number of articles, the results showed that BIM research in Indonesia is still in a dearth. Furthermore, BIM study cases were conducted in a limited location and within a small population. Nevertheless, the literature shared the conclusion that BIM can increase project efficiency, but the implementation was hindered by high initial investment cost, inadequate human resources, small demand, and technology resistant. The research contributes to providing a current reported level of BIM implementation in Indonesia. In the future research to study of BIM implementation comprehensively in Indonesia is eminent.

Application of Building Information Modeling Tool for Building Project

2015

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a smart technological tool that allows a project to be built virtually before being built physically. It creates and uses consistent, coordinated, computable information about a building project. This dependable digital information about a building can be used for production of high-quality construction documents, design decision-making, costestimating, performance predictions, construction planning and eventually for managing and operating the facility. The purpose of this paper was to see the impact of BIM implementation on the traditional conventional building design methods. The BIM is extends this methodology into three dimensional (3D) drawings in the three primary dimensional width, height and depth with the time as the fourth dimension (4D) and cost as the fifth (5D). 4D model based scheduling simulation can be used to monitor the progress at site without being actually present there. It can also help in monitoring delays in relation to...
