Managing Supply Chains in a Post-COVID World
2020
ABSTRACT: The COVID-19 disruption resulted in reactive and uncoordinated logistics behaviors creating a crisis that impacted the viability of many companies worldwide (Choi, Rogers, and Vakil 2020). The purpose of this study is to suggest how to resolve the issues facing supply chain logistics by first identifying the supply chain disruptions of the past and then analyzing the resulting consequences of these disruptions. We propose to show how fragile the supply chain system in the United States is by demonstrating how existing technologies have not yet been exploited to their full potential, which would help to reduce the vulnerability of supply chains in the United States to new and unprecedented disruptions. We conclude by offering some potential solutions to combat this vulnerability in the supply chain and related logistics by incorporating existing technologies to reduce the impact of future disruptions, whether they are created by policy, by possibility, or by pandemic! Supply Chain Management in Pandemic Times
Tehnički glasnik
The automotive industry is one of the sectors that has been hardest hit by the pandemic crisis. The pandemic’s effects have resulted in multiple disorders, which led to loss of important suppliers and the inability to obtain vital parts, exposing the vulnerability of current Lean Just in Time supply chains. This paper provides a brief analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the automotive sector in the Republic of North Macedonia. The provided findings are based on a research study conducted simultaneously in eight automotive organizations in the Republic of North Macedonia. This study sought to investigate the extent of the pandemic's influence on organizations' supply chains, what preventive steps have been implemented to minimize the virus's transmission, and what are the most prevalent obstacles that organizations have experienced during the pandemic.
Proposed Solutions after COVID-19 for Supply Chains
International Journal of Innovation, Management and Technology
The article is devoted to the analysis of the consequences and effects of the pandemic on the development of international trade in the context of the COVID-19, as well as the problems faced by supply chains and their severe transformation in the current environment. One of the key solutions to the normalization of supply chains is information and communication technologies, which are an integral part of innovation. This article includes an analysis of the literature on the subject and examines the various challenges that supply chains face on a daily basis. Moreover, a comparative analysis of scientific articles was carried out in order to analyze how the development of information and communication technologies and their implementation can facilitate and systematize logistics at the regional and international levels.
An In-depth Review of Supply Chain Management
Integrated Publications, 2024
This chapter provides a fundamental understanding of Supply Chain Management (SCM), a critical function that orchestrates the flow of goods, services, and information from producers to consumers. Beginning with the foundational concepts, the chapter introduces the reader to the integral components of a supply chain and the key principles of SCM, including some case studies. It further elaborates on the significance of strategic supplier relationships, inventory management, demand forecasting, and customer service in maintaining an efficient and effective supply chain. The chapter also discusses the impact of Covid-19 on supply chain management, and impact of modern technology trends like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain on SCM, and how they are revolutionizing traditional supply chain operations. Risk management in supply chains, addressing issues such as disruptions, delays, and quality failures, is explored to provide readers with strategies for mitigating potential supply chain risks.
Supply Chain Management for Extreme Conditions: Research Opportunities
Social Science Research Network, 2021
Large companies were concerned about their supply chains with environmental and social sustainability and disruption from natural disasters, conflict, and trade disagreements even before the advent of Covid-19. The additional challenges presented by Covid-19 in 2020 are "extreme" in being distinct from supply chain risk in that not just particular companies, but also entire societies are affected. Therefore, it is appropriate to rethink supply chain management (SCM) for research and practice to cope with extreme conditions, now and in the future, whether due to pandemics, war, climate change, or biodiversity collapse. In this essay, we first present the widespread challenges, along with some of the responses. We then list research opportunities for supply chain management in extreme conditions. These opportunities pertain to retailers' survival in the face of highly successful e-commerce giants and the mixed use of robots and human workers. There are also opportunities to share supply-chain capacity in distribution and coopetition regarding medically necessary items such as anti-virals or vaccines. The growing role of government in supporting business, including the creation of industry commons, also presents avenues for further research.
Supply Chain Management in the Post Covid Era
2020
In this era of disruptive globalization, supply chain management success depends on the management ability to integrate the business or organizations networks of business relationships. This paper investigate what are the new challenges in the supply chain management and how to overcome this new disruptive challenges.
Managing Supply Chains During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Central European Management Journal
Purpose: The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the lives of people and organizations, including supply chains (SC). Therefore, this study aims to explore concepts, methods, and tools for managing SC during the Covid-19 pandemic. Methodology: The main research methods were systematic and grey literature reviews, supported by 5W2H and 20/80 methods. Findings: Three research gaps were identified, supported by concepts, methods, and tools for managing SC during the Covid-19 pandemic with other related findings. Limitations: Short research horizon because the Covid-19 pandemic started two years ago, which precluded us from performing full results verification. Implications: This study updates and enriches supply chain management theories, especially regarding resiliency, disruption, and risk SC management. One of the fifteen research criteria was related to applied concepts, methods, and tools, which thus can be used by SC managers to implement them into practice. Originality/Value: Compared t...
The role of information and digital tools in supply chain management during the Covid crisis
Acta logistica
Supply chains have become the most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic, as evidenced by problems in the supply of semiconductors, food, and other products, which raises the problem of supply chain manageability. There has been a so-called ‘shortening’ of the supply chain. The paper addressed the problem of using digital tools in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The study aims to examine the main digital tools used by local businesses and evaluate the prospects for logistics management using new technology. The hypothesis is that SMEs that do not use digital tools in supply chain management are also characterized by the poor quality of management. A survey was conducted to identify the actual supply chain management practices during the COVID-19-induced crisis in the Russian Federation, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Kazakhstan and discover common trends and differences in these countries. A set of recommendations for implementing best global practices ...
Supply Chain Operations Management in Pandemics: A State-of-the-Art Review Inspired by COVID-19
Sustainability, 2021
Pandemics cause chaotic situations in supply chains (SC) around the globe, which can lead towards survivability challenges. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented humanitarian crisis that has severely affected global business dynamics. Similar vulnerabilities have been caused by other outbreaks in the past. In these terms, prevention strategies against propagating disruptions require vigilant goal conceptualization and roadmaps. In this respect, there is a need to explore supply chain operation management strategies to overcome the challenges that emerge due to COVID-19-like situations. Therefore, this review is aimed at exploring such challenges and developing strategies for sustainability, and viability perspectives for SCs, through a structured literature review (SLR) approach. Moreover, this study investigated the impacts of previous epidemic outbreaks on SCs, to identify the research objectives, methodological approaches, and implications for SCs. The study also expl...
