Managing Supply Chains During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Purpose: The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the lives of people and organizations, including supply chains (SC). Therefore, this study aims to explore concepts, methods, and tools for managing SC during the Covid-19 pandemic. Methodology: The main research methods were systematic and grey literature reviews, supported by 5W2H and 20/80 methods. Findings: Three research gaps were identified, supported by concepts, methods, and tools for managing SC during the Covid-19 pandemic with other related findings. Limitations: Short research horizon because the Covid-19 pandemic started two years ago, which precluded us from performing full results verification. Implications: This study updates and enriches supply chain management theories, especially regarding resiliency, disruption, and risk SC management. Managing supply chains during the Covid-19 crisis: synthesis of academic and practitioner visions and recommendations for the future

Purpose-The Covid-19 pandemic has created an environment of high uncertainty and caused major disruptions in supply chains. The new normal that has emerged during the pandemic is leading to a need to identify new solutions to improve supply chain crisis management in the future. Practitioners require adapted recommendations for solutions to implement. These recommendations are laid out in this paper. Design/methodology/approach-A combination of a systematic literature review (SLR), qualitative semistructured interviews and a questionnaire survey of supply chain practitioners is applied. The interviews provide insights into supply chain practitioners' views of their approaches and, together with the solutions proposed in the literature, provide future recommendations for action for supply chain managers. Findings-During the pandemic, companies experienced disruptions in supply, production and demand, as well as interruptions in transportation and distribution. The majority of the solutions proposed in the literature, coincide with the opinions of practitioners. These include collaborative risk management, realtime monitoring and information sharing, supply network management, scenario planning and "what-if" simulations. Research limitations/implications-Although the number of interviews conducted and questionnaires completed is limited, they still serve to supplement the SLR with important practical insights and recommendations. Originality/value-This paper presents a review of recent academic literature focusing on the impact of Covid-19 on supply chains and the existing solutions to mitigate that impact and manage future crises. It has been expanded to include industry perspectives and experiences. The findings of this study present recommended practices and strategies for better managing supply chains during a crisis. The published research is part of the project COSMOS (Collaborative and Open Supply chain Management Operating System) partly funded by the "German-French Academy for the Industry of the Future". This academy is a strategic vehicle to promote close collaboration between leading European research institutions and industrial companies, and was founded by the French Institut Mines-T el ecom (IMT) and the German Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Strategies to Manage the Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Supply Chain: Implications for Improving Economic and Social Sustainability

This paper aims to identify the negative impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak on supply chains and propose strategies to deal with the impacts in the context of the readymade garment (RMG) industry supply chain of an emerging economy: Bangladesh. To achieve the aims, a methodological framework is proposed through a literature review, expert inputs, and a decision-aid tool, namely the grey-based digraph-matrix method. A total of 10 types of negative impacts and 22 strategic measures to tackle the impacts were identified based on the literature review and expert inputs. Then, the grey-based digraph-matrix was applied for modeling the strategic measures based on their influence to deal with the impacts. Findings reveal that the strategies "manufacturing flexibility", "diversify the source of supply", and "develop backup suppliers" have significant positive consequences for managing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the RMG supply chain. The findings help industrial managers recover from supply chain disruptions by identifying and classifying the impacts and strategies required to manage the major supply chain disturbances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a theoretical contribution, this study is one of few initial attempts to evaluate the impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak and the strategies to deal with the impacts in the supply chain context.

The competition between companies increases day by day with the change of customer demands and requirements. This competition is no longer between companies, it has started to occur in the networks in which companies are located. At this point, the importance given by companies to activities in their supply chain has increased. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, a number of problems have occurred in the supply chain management of companies. Covid-19 drove the whole world into a major crisis. Many sectors have suffered from economic collapse due to the pandemic. Therefore, firms faced with an imbalance between supply and demand. In this context, the aim of the study is to reveal conceptual evaluations about supply chain management and to present how and in what way companies are affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Maintaining efficient logistics and supply chain management operations during and after coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic: learning from the past experiences

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) forced the governing bodies across the world to ban all kinds of travel involving the movement of people. However, the policymakers have been working hard to mobilize the movement of essential goods and services considering its importance in containing the pandemic. It signifies how important the establishment and maintenance of logistics and supply chain management (LSCM) operations are, both during the containment and the successive periods. Motivated with the paramount importance of LSCM operations during the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) across the globe, this paper critically reviews the existing literature closely related to it. The main aim is to identify and enhance the understanding of the logistical characteristics that play a vital role during pandemics. The selection of the literature was done using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) methodology. The classification of the selected literature was done using a tripartite framework. Results show that researchers have focused mostly on "Post-event" (48.24%) management of logistical operations followed by the "Pre-event" (31.76%) and least in the "Integrated" (20%.) approaches. Furthermore, the analysis of the results provided useful insights that are discussed in detail. Also, twelve key areas have been identified that need due attention to improve the overall efficiency of the LSCM operations. We believe that the findings from this paper would be useful to the decision-makers and other stakeholders, as far as, maintaining efficient LSCM operations during as well after the pandemics are concerned.

The automotive industry is one of the sectors that has been hardest hit by the pandemic crisis. The pandemic’s effects have resulted in multiple disorders, which led to loss of important suppliers and the inability to obtain vital parts, exposing the vulnerability of current Lean Just in Time supply chains. This paper provides a brief analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the automotive sector in the Republic of North Macedonia. The provided findings are based on a research study conducted simultaneously in eight automotive organizations in the Republic of North Macedonia. This study sought to investigate the extent of the pandemic's influence on organizations' supply chains, what preventive steps have been implemented to minimize the virus's transmission, and what are the most prevalent obstacles that organizations have experienced during the pandemic.
