Statistical Analysis of Rainfall data in Tiruchirappalli District
Agro-climatic characters play an important role in deciding the cropping pattern of a region. The distribution of rainfall is one such climatic character essential to plan farm activities in a given region. The present study was conducted to know the climatic characterization of Tiruchirappalli rain gauge station. The Secondary data of rainfall for 34 years (1980-2014) was obtained from Department of Economics and Statistics, Chennai. Among the weather parameters, amount of maximum daily rainfall (mm) was considered to fit appropriate probability distributions. The probability distributions viz., Normal, Log- normal, Gamma (1P, 2P, 3P), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Weibull (1P, 2P, 3P), Gumbel and Pareto were used to evaluate the best fit for maximum daily rainfall (mm). Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for the goodness of fit of the probability distributions showed that for majority of the data sets on rainfall at different study periods, Log- normal distribution was found to be the best fit. However, all the data sets were shape dominated which indicated that there was not much large variation in the distribution of rainfall.
Frequency Analysis of Rainfall Data of Dharamshala Region
MATEC Web of Conferences, 2016
The present study evaluates the rainfall magnitude for different return periods and also to ascertain the type of probability distribution that best fits the rainfall data of Dharamshala (H.P.), India. The study uses the 20 years of annual rainfall data that are useful for the prediction of annual one day maximum rainfall and two to seven days consecutive days maximum rainfall corresponding to return period varying from 2 to 20 years are to be used for the economic planning, by design engineers and by hydrologists, design of small and medium hydrologic structures and determine the drainage coefficient for agricultural fields. Most probability distributions (viz: Normal, Log Normal and Gamma distribution) and transformations are applied to estimate one day and two to seven consecutive days annual maximum rainfall of various return periods in the Dharamshala (H.P.) region. The mean value of one-day annual maximum rainfall at Dharamshala is found to be 142.9 mm with standard deviation and coefficient of variation of 54.8 and 51.34 respectively. The coefficient of skewness is 1.1. For 2 to 7 days consecutive annual maximum rainfall range values for mean, standard deviation,
Statistical Analysis of Rainfall Distribution in Biratnagar, Nepal: A case study
Pragya Darshan प्रज्ञा दर्शन
Rainfall is a key component in the construction of many engineering projects, including canals, bridges, culverts, and road drainage systems. The primary goal of this study is to ascertain the annual, monthly and seasonal fluctuations in rainfall in Biratnagar, Nepal over a period of 10 years (2010-2019). The mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, skewness, kurtosis, Precipitation Concentration Index (PCI), normal rainfall along with Mann-Kendall test were calculated to check the rainfall variations. The annual data showed the biggest varieties in rainfall, with an average annual rainfall of 1542.43 mm during a ten years period. Furthermore, an erratic monthly rainfall pattern was found by the non-parametric Mann-Kendall test. However, the test value for each month was non-significant at the 5% level of significance. We also found that the rainfall is least in the winter and most during monsoon season. Based on these calculations, It is seen that the pattern of rainfall...

In this case study, Daily Rainfall Data (1984-2019) of SambraRaingauge station in North Karnataka is used. An attempt was made to fit various probability distribution functions to the datasets of 1 day and 2 to 5 consecutive days annual maximum rainfall. The goodness of fit of probability distribution functions were tested by comparing the Chi-square (χ 2) values. No single probability distribution was adequate to describe the entire datasets. Various trendlines were also fitted to the rainfall datasets mentioned above; the best fit was decided based on the value of coefficient of determination R 2 , no single trendline equation was able to describe the entire datasets. The magnitudes of 1 day as well as 2 to 5 consecutive days annual maximum rainfall corresponding to 2 to 100 years return period were estimated best fit distribution function, it was found that even though Normal distribution function had low Chi-square value comparatively, it cannot be used overall for estimation of rainfall values of different return periods for all the datasets. Rainfall was also estimated by best fit trendline equation i.e.polynomial 3 rd order, for all the datasets corresponding to 2 to 100 years return period. It was observed the rainfall values predicted for 100 years return period for 1 to 5 consecutive days maximum rainfall were extremely high and unrealistic with respect to climate conditions of Sambra region. Chi-square test (χ 2) was conducted between observed rainfall and predicted rainfall by different trendline equations to ascertain the bestfit as determined by R 2 , it was not able to establish the same results as determined by coefficient of determination.
Statistical Analysis of 30 Year Rainfall Data: A Case Study for Langat River Basin
The Eurasia Proceedings of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics
Rainfall is an important factor in civil engineering as it affects the design of hydraulic structures, bridges and culverts, canals, storm water sewers, road drainage systems, etc. This paper presents the statistical analysis of 30-year rainfall data collected at eight rainfall stations within the Langat River Basin. Ten plotting position methods were utilised to evaluate the return period of annual rainfall. The yearly rainfall was computed to assess the variability of rainfall based on the determined results; the pattern of rainfall is irregular. Weibull Distribution from Plotting Position methods is found to best fit the annual rainfall data. The findings provide the insights for determining the correct commencement and cessation of monsoon results, which have the effect on land utilisation, flood forecasting and emergency planning. This analysis contributes to water management, water resource planners, farmers, and urban engineers to evaluate the availability of water and develop the storage accordingly.

Statistical analysis of rainfall pattern and trend of Parbhani district, Maharashtra
International Journal of Statistics and Applied Mathematics, 2024
Rainfall regime is perhaps the most important factor in determining the potential productivity of various agricultural activities. To analyze, the extent of variation in the rainfall pattern in the study area, the short term time series weather data was used for a period of 10 years i.e. from 2013-2023 and the annual rainfall data was obtained from the department of Agrometeorology, College of Agriculture, Vasantrao Naik Matrathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth, Parbhani. The data related to production of crops were collected from Government of Maharashtra statistical database. The statistical descriptive measures namely, mean, standard deviation (SD), Coefficient of variation (CV), Minimum, Maximum, Skewness, Kurtosis have been calculated. Using linear trend, the change in rainfall has been evaluated. It is observed that district receives maximum amount of rainfall that the district receives the maximum amount of rainfall from the southwest monsoon, around 81.61 per cent from June to September, the district receives 17.39 per cent in June and 26.96, 15.33 and 21.93 per cent rainfall in the month of July, August and September, respectively. The rainfall in Parbhani district showed considerable variation from year to year, with both positive and negative deviations from the normal levels with some years experiencing significant deviations from the normal rainfall affecting both surplus and deficit conditions across the prevailing seasons. Monsoonal rainfall is correlated with crop production. The correlation values between crop production and monsoon rainfall give an insight into how dependent each crop is on monsoon rains Pulses like tur, green gram and black gram have higher correlations with monsoon rainfall indicating they are highly sensitive to monsoon variations. Oilseeds like groundnut, sesamum and soybean have relatively low correlations, which may indicate adaptability or the availability of irrigation in growing region. The findings suggest a need for improved rainfall forecasting and adaptive agricultural strategies to mitigate the effects of both years of deficit and years of excessive rainfall. The district experienced periods of excess rainfall and drought-like conditions, leading to an unpredictable agricultural environment.
