A guide to European terrestrial and freshwater species of Enchytraeidae (Oligochaeta)
A guide to European terrestrial and freshwater enchytraeid species is presented, designed for the identification of living specimens. Altogether 206 species are included. Recent taxonomic advances regarding new species, revisions, and improved standards of description are integrated. Marine and exotic species are excluded. The illustrated keys are preceded by introductions into the taxonomic traits, the general anatomy of enchytraeids, and the technique of handling living worms during the identification process. Due to persistent taxonomic problems in many groups, a 'sensu lato' approach is adopted in the circumscription of several common species. Bryodrilus ehlersi glandulosus Dózsa-Farkas, 1990 and Enchytraeus christenseni bisetosus Rota & Healy, 1994 are elevated to species rank; the latter receives a new name, Enchytraeus dichaetus, due to homonymy with Enchytraeus bisetosus Levinsen, 1884, now Fridericia bisetosa. New enchytraeid species (Oligochaeta: Enchytraeidae) from the Danube–Dráva National Park

The enchytraeid fauna of the Dráva Floodplain (Bükkhát Forest Reserve, alder swamp and meadows at Kisszentmárton, and Barcs Nature Conservation Area belonging to the Danube-Dráva National Park, Hungary) was investigated for the first time. A total of 14 enchytraeid genera, including 49 species and two other annelid worms (Hrabeiella periglandulata and Rhyacodrilus falciformis) were identified. Four species: Fridericia connatiformis sp. n., F. phaeostriata sp. n., F. longiducta sp. n. and Cernosvitoviella buekkhati sp. n. are new to science and described in this paper.

This paper contains the results of a taxonomic workshop held at the Võrtsjärv Limnological Station on 15-22 May 2004, following the 6th International Symposium on Enchytraeidae. A total of 58 samples were taken from a wide diversity of habitat types; 44 enchytraeid taxa were distinguished, * Corresponding author, ttimm@zbi.ee 256 40 of them were identified to species level. Twelve nominal species are new for Estonia. Of these two species, one each of Achaeta and Fridericia, are new to science; they are described separately in this volume. Further species new to Estonia are: Bryodrilus ehlersi, Buchholzia fallax, Fridericia argillae, F. benti, F. christeri, F. maculatiformis, F. minor, F. rendsinata, F. waldenstroemi, and Mesenchytraeus flavus. The taxonomic status of Timmodrilus oligoseta and Achaeta petseri, species newly described for Estonia in previous papers, is uncertain, they are possibly junior synonyms. One tubificid species was found, Rhyacodrilus falciformis, this being the first record of the species from soil in Estonia. Together with previous publications, there are now 46 enchytraeid species recorded from Estonia.

Enchytraeus polatdemiri sp. nov. (Enchytaeidae, Oligochaeta) was discovered in the framework of a sampling campaign of the benthic invertebrate fauna of the hyperalkaline Lake Van in Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, the third-largest closed lake and the largest soda lake on Earth. It was the only oligochaete species found in all samples. DNA sequencing included a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, and a fragment of the nuclear histone 3 (H3) gene. For comparison, specimens from laboratory cultures of E. albidus Henle, 1837, a widespread and morphologically similar species, were sequenced as well. Enchytraeids (Oligochaeta, Enchytraeidae) of Warsaw and Mazovia

The study on the species composition and abundance of the Enchytraeidae living in Warsaw was carried out on 24 plots in 1974-1977. In this period 22 species were recorded of eight genera, among which the genus Fridericia Mich, was most numerous (Tab. 1). The highest number of species occurred in the soils of parks, green areas of housing estates, and lawns in the centre of the town. Four geographical groups of species have been distinguished: European (50.0%), Holarctic (37.5%), cosmopolitan (= geopolitan) (8.3%), and Palaearctic (4.2%) (Tab. 2). No association of individual species with particular habitats was found. But the numbers of species and individuals were considerably higher on the plots located under or near the canopy of trees and shrubs. All the urban plots were generally characterized by considerably lower numbers of Enchytraeidae than other anthropogenic habitats, especially agroecosystems. As far as the origin of urban Enchytraeidae is concerned, local species predominate, with large ranges and high adaptability to changing environmental conditions.
The Oligochaeta (Annelida) Fauna of Yuvarlak Stream (Köyceğiz-Turkey)

To detect the distribution of Oligochaeta fauna of Yuvarlak Stream in the Koycegiz-Dalyan protected area in SouthWestern Turkey, monthly samplings were made from 11 stations from May 2001 to April 2002. The samples were collected by using 180 µ and 500 µ mesh size hand nets and an Ekman-Birge Grab in 9th and 10th stations. As a result of the study, totally 50 taxa comprised of 17 species from Tubificidae, 28 species from Naididae, 3 species from Enchytraeidae and 2 species from Lumbriculidae were determined. Tubifex newaensis, Nais alpina and Nais behningi are new records for the inland water fauna of Turkey.

The Balıkdamı Wetland, an impoundment of the upper course of the Sakarya River located near Sivrihisar (Eskişehir, Central Anatolia), is one of the most important bird conservation areas in Turkey. This area also encompasses the mouth of the torrential Göksu Stream, which is partly hyporheic. During this study (2001)(2002)(2003), 1,471 specimens representing 34 taxa of aquatic Oligochaeta were collected from the Balıkdamı Wetland. All the species identified are new records for Balıkdamı. Two species, Coralliodrilus amissus sp. n. and Gianius anatolicus sp. n., are new to science, and five species, Stylodrilus parvus (Hrabě et Černosvitov, 1927), Chaetogaster diastrophus (Gruithuisen, 1828), Peipsidrilus libanus , Tubifex acuticularis Martinez-Ansemil et , and Epirodrilus moubayedi Giani et , are new records for Turkey. Two other species, Peipsidrilus libanus and Tubifex acuticularis, are re-described. The oligochaete fauna of the wetland was dominated by widely distributed tubificid taxa. The lumbriculid Stylodrilus parvus was the most abundant species in the Göksu stream. The two new phallodriline species are remarkable since most representatives of this subfamily live in the marine environment. Due to the species richness and diversity of Oligochaeta, as well as of several other animal groups, the Balıkdamı wetland area deserves conservation.

A total of 237 benthic samples was collected from 75 stations (30 springs, 21 lakes, one pond, 12 reservoirs, 7 flowing streams, 3 canals, one cave) between June 1999-November 2000 and evaluated in order to determine the distribution of oligochaete fauna in inland waters of Lake District, Turkey. As a result of the study, a total of 46 species was determined, comprising 2 species from Lumbriculidae, 1 species from Haplotaxidae, 3 species from Enchytraeidae, 24 species from Tubificidae, 14 species from Naididae, 1 species from Lumbricidae and 1 species from Glossoscolecidae. Among these, Henlea nasuta, Mesenchytraeus armatus, Tubifex tubifex f. bergi, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri f. parvus, Ilyodrilus frantzi, Spirosperma nikolskyi are new records for the inland water fauna of Turkey.

A new species of enchytraeids with peculiar characters is described, Enchytraeus demutatus sp. nov. The species differs from all known species of Enchytraeus in features of the oesophageal appendages and the male efferent apparati. The oesophageal appendages insert ventro-laterally below the pharyngeal pad and not dorsally behind the pad, as is usual in the genus; furthermore, their histology is different. The male efferent apparati have each an unusually wide and short vas deferens, and accessory glands are attached to the inner surface of the male glandular bulb, in close vicinity to the male pore. The remaining characters agree with the genus diagnosis of Enchytraeus, notably the presence of testis sacs and oesophageal appendages. The bisetose worms are about 5 mm long and 0.2–0.3 mm wide.
