In the case of Diabetes Mellitus, it will trigger some changes in lipid metabolism and lipoprotein composition, one of them is cholesterol. Cholesterol is a lipid that plays an important role in the structure of cell membranes. Seaweed contains bioactive components of flavonoids which reduce cholesterol levels. Brown seaweed contains bioactive components of alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, saponins, phenol hydroquinone, tannins, chlorophyll and β-carotene pigments. The bioactive component of brown seaweed also has strong antioxidant activity that can prevent damage caused by oxidative stress on pancreatic β cell function and acts as a trap for various free radicals and can reduce diabetic rat lipid peroxidation. Hyperlipidemia is metabolic disorder caused by increase in circulating of fatty acids, triglycerides and cholesterol. One factor that can lead hyperlipidemia condition is induction of high doses of dexamethasone. One alternative therapy of hyperlipidemia is consuming antioxidants in purslane extract. Purslane extract contains highest levels of omega 3 fatty acids that act as antioxidants and can reduce lipid concentration in plasma. This study was aimed to determine the therapeutic effect of purslane extract on the activity of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) in hyperlipidemia rat model. Hyperlipidemia rat model made by inducing of dexamethasone 10 mg/kgBW subcutaneously and therapy of purslane extract treated orally for 8 days. Five group of rats were used in this research which were control group, hyperlipidemia group, therapy dose of 200 mg/kgBW group, therapy dose of 400 mg/kgBW group and therapy dose of 800 mg/kgBW group. The observed parameter was lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity that measured quantitatively by alkalimetry. The result showed that the purslane extract could increase the activity of LPL significantly (p<0,05) in hyperlipidemia rat model with the effective dose was 800 mg/kgBW. The conclusion from this study was that purslane extract can be used as an alternative therapy in rat hyperlipidemia.
Prediabetes has been becoming a pandemic that its prevalence higher than diabetes. Prediabetes increases risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. We need evidence the benefit of propolis with research subject are human after evidence by animal research has been proven.The objective of the research was to analyze the effect of propolis on Fasting blood Glucose and Glucose Tolerance Prediabates Patients. The research was a Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT). The intervention done was to give propolis extract 20% with the result of Biofarmaka Laboratory test of Hasanuddin University containing quercetin content 25.29 mg/L and health education with counseling strategy. Fasting blood glucose and glucose tolerance tested by Health Laboratory Great Hall of Makassar with venous Blood specimen. The samples were 64 people consisting of 32 people given propolis and 32 given health education. The result of Wilcoxon with 0.05 significance level proves that the giving of propolis for 20 days, after eat with low doses (50 mg/Kg or 6 dots per day) significantly decreased fasting blood glucose and glucose tolerance test with respectively -14.28 (p=0.000) and -23.16 (p=0.000). Fasting Blood Glucose and glucose tolerance test of Health Education group decreased significantly, with respectively -14.9 (p=0.001) and -13.98 (p=0.000). Giving Propolis and Education are effective for changing of blood glucose and glucose tolerance. Propolis is potential to use as a pharmacology therapy for prediabetes Key words: Propolis, Prediabetes, Fasting Blood Glucose, Glucose Tolerance.

Food contains nutrients, including carbohydrate which has major role in energy production needed for internal and external activities. Several kinds of carbohydrate, such as inulin (fruktan) and fructooligosacharides (FOS) were proven be able to modify physiologic and biochemical process, specifically fatty acids and cholesterol metabolism. These fact showed that this both carbohydrate compounds biologically active in influencing blood lipid profile, including tryasilglycerol (TAG) or tryglycerides. Metformin dengan jahe ketika digunakan bersamaan efek antidiabetes yang dimiliki keduanya bekerja secara sinergis dalam menurunkan kadar glukosa darah. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat interaksi yang terjadi akibat penggunaan perasan jahe dan metformin yang dilihat dari perubahan kadar glukosa darah dan organ mencit diabetes. Mencit diabetes yang telah diinduksi alloksan dibagi menjadi enam kelompok dan diobati dengan metformin, perasan jahe, kombinasi perasan jahe dan metformin 1x1 dan kombinasi perasan jahe dan metformin 2x1 selama empat hari. Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. Active compounds contained in ginger are gingerol, shogaol and niacin (B3) can potentially reduce total blood cholesterol levels. The purpose of this study is to know the effectiveness rhizome of elephant ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) water extract to decrease total cholesterol blood levels in mice feed high-fat and induced propylthiouracil. The methode of this study was experimental with 30 male mice DDY strain fed high fat and induced propylthouracil 0.01% for 7 days in group II-VI. Elephant ginger rhizome warter extract was given at doses 28; 56; and 112 mg/kg weight with positive control of simvastatin 0,026 mg/kg weight. Retinol is one of the active forms of vitamin A. In the previous study, it was known that retinol level in serum of DM patient was lower than in healthy people, which correlated with an increase of the glucose levels in these patients. The importance of retinol in insulin signaling mechanisms that play a role in the pathogenesis of DM is still unknown.
