Review of International Business and Strategy, 2022
Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to explore empirically how the two kinds of strategic orientations including export market orientation (EMO) and technology orientation (TO) predict innovation performance (IP) and export performance (EP), by investigating the mediation effect of IP and the moderation effect of external network (EN). Design/methodology/approach-The statistical population of this research is the food and agricultural products exporting firms which participated in the 26th International Agrofood Exhibition in Tehran, Iran. The sample of 296 managers filled out questionnaires using systematic random sampling methods. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. Findings-Results demonstrate that the increase of EMO and IP is related to a rise in EP. Furthermore, the research finds that IP is a partial mediator in the link between EMO and EP. Finally, the moderation impact of the external networks in an association between TO and IP is supported by the data. Originality/value-This study is one of the limited number of studies to consider the mediation impact of innovation performance in the relationship between EMO and EP, and it is actually the first study, to the best of the authors' knowledge, to investigate the moderating impact of EN in the relationship between TO and IP in the context of one developing country.
Dynamic and Operational Capabilities for Innovation: Their Influence on Export Market Effectiveness
2015
This paper analyzes the influence of technological turbulence, organizational management dynamic capability and operational capabilities for innovation on export market effectiveness. Based on the dynamic capability view, we investigate the effect of technological turbulence on organizational management dynamic capability, and how this latter contributes to leverage operational capabilities for innovation in order to benefit performance in export markets. To test the hypotheses, we carry out a structural equation model, using a sample of 471 exporting manufacturers firms that operate from Portugal. The results demonstrate that technological turbulence is an antecedent factor of organizational management dynamic capability, which in turn has a significant impact on the development of firms’ operational capabilities for innovation, specifically innovativeness, innovation strategy, and technological capability. However, the findings only establish that innovation strategy and technolog...
Social Responsibility Journal
Abstract Purpose This paper aims to investigate the link between internal capabilities, innovation strategies and export performance (EP), considering the corporate social responsibility (CSR) principle as a moderator. Design/methodology/approach The statistical population of the current study is the food and agricultural products exporting small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) which participated in the 27th International Agrofood Exhibition (2021) in Tehran, Iran. A sample of 296 managers was selected, using systematic random sampling, to answer the questionnaire. To analyze the data, we used structural equation modeling (SEM) and Hayes PROCESS in SPSS. Findings Results show that just manufacturing capabilities affect both exploratory and exploitative innovation, in contrast to marketing capabilities that does not have any significant impact on these two innovation strategies. Moreover, the impact of both explorative and exploratory innovation on EP is supported in the context of food and agricultural SMEs. However, CSR positively moderates the impact of exploratory innovation on EP, showing it has a negative effect on the impact of exploitative innovation on EP. Originality/value By addressing the research gap on the link between internal capabilities, innovation strategies, EP and CSR among SMEs, the current research provides a valuable body of research that later studies in the literature can leverage or build upon.
Effects of innovativeness on export performance of manufacturing SMEs in Kano, Nigeria
Federal University Wukari Journal of Accounting and Finance (fuwjaf), 2022
The central objective of this study was to assess the effects of innovativeness on the performance of exporting manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Kano, Nigeria. Based on a theoretical consideration a model was proposed and a hypothesis was formulated. Survey questionnaires were used in the data collection and a total of 110 usable responses were received from the owners/managers of exporting manufacturing SMEs in Kano. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed in the data analysis. The results of the analysis depict that innovativeness has a significant effect on the export performance of manufacturing SMEs. The managerial implication of this study indicates that innovativeness is a significant internal determinant of export performance. Exporting SME managers could take complementary advantage of innovativeness resources to perform more than their competitors. The study recommends leveraging renewal strategy on incentives given to SMEs and reconfiguring innovativeness; revamping all old Industrial Development Centres and establishing new ones (IDCs); establishing SME clusters; upgrading rural-urban roads, introducing innovative studies; and emphasizing science among others.
Measuring innovation capability in exporting firms: the INNOVSCALE
International Marketing Review, 2015
Purpose – The development of innovation capability is an important topic for both managers and academics. However, studies that investigate which elements integrate innovation capability in the context of export market are very scarce. Drawing on the resource-based view, the purpose of this paper is to identify important dimensions in order to build a scale to measure innovation capability in exporting firms – the INNOVSCALE. Design/methodology/approach – The study draws on data collected by online questionnaire in a sample survey of 471 exporting manufacturing firms. The results were obtained using structural equation modeling. Statistical tests demonstrate that the scale presents composite reliability as well as convergent and nomological validity. Findings – The findings reveal that innovation capability is a higher-order construct formed by four dimensions: product development capability, innovativeness, strategic capability, and technological capability. The results also indica...
Capabilities, Innovation, and Overall Performance in Brazilian Export Firms
RAM. Revista de Administração Mackenzie, 2015
This article extends the current research on innovation by investigating the relationship between innovative capabilities and export firms’ overall performance. From the perspectives of the resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capability, we examine the differential and interactive effects of exploration and exploitation capabilities in product innovation for external markets and overall performance (direct and mediated by a new product). In addition, we test the moderating effect of market dynamism and the controlling effect of firm size on these relationships. Hence, the main contribution of this article is developing and empirically testing an original model, by combining these constructs that address new relationships, in an emerging country. This model was tested with data from 498 Brazilian export firms, distributed throughout all Brazilian manufacturing sectors, by firm size, and in states. The analysis was made with application of the structural equation modeling (SEM). As ...
Impact of innovation and international networking on firm openness to foreign markets strategy in Middle East and North Africa: individualism' moderating effect, 2020
Firms are constantly looking for ways to succeed, exporting seems to be one of the most efficient means to do it. So as we can say exporting has a double aim, from a microeconomic point of view, it allows the firm to find new opportunities and from a macroeconomic point of view, it increases the growth level. This article main question treats the effects of innovation, international networking and socio-cultural differences within countries on the entrepreneur's decision to adopt or neglect exporting strategy. To do this, we used a linear hierarchical model based on 8,605 firms from 15 different countries in the MENA region, the data comes from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) database. This study brought some interesting results, in which we conclude on the moderating effect of individualism on networking, in the main time we've demonstrated that innovation and individualistic culture are positively linked to exporting decision-making.
