Systems and agricultural organizations are facing new challenges in an increasingly complex and competitive environment. Opposing the existence of other food producers that show low profitability in their production systems, there are other models that have differentiated through ecological production being able to reach high profitability in their production systems. Ecological agriculture is seen as an opportunity to supply to those social segments that would rather consume healthy products. This article reviews literature on processes and key management factors for the sustained success of an organization, resulting on a conceptual framework that synthesizes these ideas. Mainly it looks at two international standards: ISO 9004 (2009) and ISO 21500 (2012). Desde 2011, la adopcion del sello organico a traves de un proceso de certificacion de productos es obligatoria para la comercializacion en los establecimientos comerciales de Brasil, excepto para las ventas realizadas directamente en los municipios de origen de produccion. De esta forma, los productores rurales que continuaron comercializando sus productos en diversos establecimientos, tanto los ubicados en su localidad como fuera de ella, tuvieron que cumplir la nueva legislacion. Portuguese organic food consumption to meet national individual and institutional demand is swiftly increasing. This demand is a missed opportunity due to lack of land access for farmers. We claim that land availability needs to be taken into consideration centrally in the formulation of local and national food policies. In particular, we suggest: 1) inter-cross coherent policy options regarding land needed to achieve goals; 2) mechanisms to strengthen multi-level and cross sectorial food governance, with a focus on land accessibility for organic food production, in particular vegetables and fruit. Based on the Torres Vedras municipality, as a study case, we conclude that local authorities have a key-role to play as facilitators for land access, primarily by identifying and mapping idle land whether communal, public or private. Results from field visits and interviews with local stakeholders suggest that cooperation across city departments and local stakeholders could spearhead an integrated food policy that would turn idle land into the decisive element of a blooming local food system. In conclusion, any municipality can do this, if there is political willingness to start a collaborative process, within municipalities, to think strategically on how to access land for food.
The Regulatory Framework of Organic Agriculture in Brazil and Sustainability

This paper is a bibliographical review article about the regulatory framework of organic agriculture in Brazil (Law 10.831 of 2003) and its relationship with environmental sustainability. From a historical perspective of organic agriculture, it is shown that it arose from the organization of social movements characterized by concern for more sustainable agricultural models in relation to conventional agriculture. Organic agriculture is one of the aspects of agroecology that has as its mark the standardization of the norms and techniques of the agricultural production system, as well as the certification of food quality, which guarantees the consumer a food security.
The proposal of agroecology has emerged in recent decades inserted into non-hegemonic developmental alternatives, expressing itself broadly as a social movement, science, practice, and lifestyle. Several social movement organizations and NGOs of the agro-ecological field congregate in the National Articulation of Agroecology (ANA). This research sought to understand the formation and political organization of the ANA, which is understood as a network with heterogeneous connections and social actors, established in 2002 to promote policy formulation and exchanges between organizations working with agroecology. We followed ANA's trajectory to understand how the association promoted agroecology as a recognized public issue and represented itself as a social network, both for converging approaches and actions, as to oppose the agribusiness and to dispute public policies. The study begins with the historical reconstruction of the agro-ecological movement, from the initial steps of alternative agriculture to the spreading and defense of agroecology by different actors and sectors. As methodological tools, we conducted semi-structured interviews, participated in events and analyzed various documents. The action as a network, even in a horizontal effort, revealed concentrations, controversies and dynamics with different degrees of involvement. The study allowed us to observe the relationships and social processes that led to the formation of the ANA, as well as its form of action as a network and its representation as part of the agro-ecological movement. ANA boosted the political significance of agroecology as a frame, mobilized the actors to a public issue and to network shares with proposals for a new utopia.

Argentina substantially contributes to the global organic agriculture and food sector due to its large areas of organically managed agricultural land. However, most of the organic production is foreseen for export. Overall, food supply for the domestic organic market is hardly tapped. This study investigates the current importance of organic agriculture and food production as well as its consumption within the country. The novelty of the study also lies in the observation, documentation and analysis of latest stakeholder-driven developments towards organic agriculture and food. The publication allows to make the Argentinian organic market significantly more visible for the international audience.
