Marital Quality: A Conceptual Review

The quality of marriage gain the attention of researchers for a long time. Various studies have been done, by placing the marital quality as an independent variable or dependent variable. Although research on marital quality has been done for a long time with a wide range of variables, conceptually, the results are not quite satisfactory. This article aimed to describe literature review on the concept of marital quality. The literature search results define quality of marriage as the level of excellence in marriage based on certain characteristics. These particular characteristics or criteria may vary from region to region. The criteria for the quality of marriage may also differ from one period to another. The dimensions of marital quality vary widely, which can be distinguished into intrapersonal and interpersonal dimensions. Meanwhile, factors affecting the quality of marriage are differentiated into internal factors and factors related to the conjugal relationships.

A Review of the Factors Associated with MaritalSatisfaction

Marital satisfaction is one of the common concepts used for assessing happiness and stability in a marriage. It is a multidimensional concept that is affected by several factors. The aim of this study was to review factors influencing marital satisfaction or dissatisfaction. A search through academic electronic databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online), Scopus, Wiley Online Library, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and Iranian databases in the period from 2000 to 2015, yielded 250 scientific papers. Related keywords that were used included marital satisfaction, marriage satisfaction, marital adjustment, and couple satisfaction. After reading the titles, 80 papers that satisfied the criteria for inclusion were selected. In general, 80 papers that were eligible to enter the study were reviewed. The decline in marital satisfaction and marital well-being which are reflected in the increase number of divorce is global issue. Neglect in roles and responsibilities of the spouses lead to a problematic relationship. Thus the objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of selected character traits of married partner on marital satisfaction. A study involving 165 samples of married samples in the state of Terengganu, Malaysia has been carried out to observe the effect of maried partner's characters namely in terms of communication, compassion and religiosity on marital satisfaction. In this study, marital satisfaction was assessed using a modified version of the ENRICH Marriage Scale. Quantitative method is employed, whereby data were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with IBM-SPSS-AMOS program version 21.0. The study investigated the factors influencing marital satisfaction among couples as perceived by counsellors in Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State. The objectives of the study were to examine various factors that could influence the individual couple satisfaction in marriage. The study was guided by one research question which was raised and answered and it employed the descriptive design, a population simple random sampling technique was use to select a total of one hundred and fifty (150) married adult within Ilorin metropolis Area of Kwara State. The data collected through the administered questionnaire was subjected to descriptive statistics; frequency count, simple percentage, mean and standard deviation while hypotheses was analysis using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The findings from the analysis revealed that; there is no significant difference in the factor influencing marital satisfaction among couples as perceived by counsellors in Ilorin metropolis based on gender, there is no significant difference in the factor influencing marital satisfaction among couples as perceived by counsellors based on highest educational background, there is no significant difference on the factor influencing marital satisfaction among couples as perceived by counsellors on based on religion, there is no significant difference on the factor influencing marital satisfaction among couples as perceived by counsellors on based on years of counselling experience and there is no significant difference on the factor influencing marital satisfaction among couples as perceived by counsellors on based on marital status. Thus, based on the findings it was recommended that married people should find ways of improving in the level of intimacy in their marital relationship. Also, there should be heighten the level of their sexual experiences in order to improve the level of their marital satisfaction and there is need for proper understanding of one selves and good communication pattern, tolerance and mind of forgiveness to live happily.
