Empirical investigation of web design attributes affecting brand perception

The web has become a mainstream communication tool used by companies, institutions, celebrities, and politicians to establish, reinforce, or repurpose their brand, almost bypassing more conventional branding media. In this scenario, understanding the effects of the different design qualities of a website on users' attitude towards the brand is of major importance. This paper contributes to the exploration of this issue by presenting a wide empirical study that investigates the degree to which users' perception of a brand is affected by different design aspects of a website, namely usability, aesthetics, and communicability. The results of this multidimensional analysis have implications on HCI research and practice, as they provide empirically founded guidelines to prioritize design choices in relationship to branding goals.
Design Research for Website Visual Branding

This paper illustrates a method that captures the impact of visual designs on consumers and provides insights for website visual branding. This method divorces visual content from text and brand so that pure impact of the visual design can be obtained. The research provides direction on which visual collateral is best aligned to specific brand strategy, balancing brand consistency and brand renewal.
The set up of practical methods for evaluation of web site aesthetics from the user perspective and the provision of useful feedback to designers is an open issue in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The paper presents an evaluation study of aesthetic attributes of two web sites from the user perspective and compares the results to the design team. The study initially involved the formulation of a set of aesthetic attributes and their appreciation by a user group of 111 users for two web sites, following a traditional user testing approach. The user evaluation was then compared to the design team's appreciation of these aesthetic attributes for their own designs. The main results of this test was that: (a) the two groups have a similar view about the presence of a considerable number of the selected aesthetic attributes; (b) users have rated most aesthetic attributes significantly lower than designers; (c) different aesthetic attributes become important for different objects of study for both groups. The design team found the evaluation informative and inspiring; however they identified the need for further explanation of user responses in terms of suggested design patterns and examples. Also, a number of recommendations towards an evaluation method of aesthetics in HCI are identified and discussed
The Subjective and Objective Nature of Website Aesthetic Impressions

This paper explores the possibility to predict positive aesthetic impression and user preference of website design through a combination of objective and subjective factors. The objective factors used are symmetry, order, balance, complexity while the subjective ones include familiarity - novelty ratings. The advantages of such an approach is the reduction of user involvement since the ratings of objective factors may be provided by a small number of design experts. We found indications that balance between certain factors maximize the possibility of users having a positive aesthetic impression.
Brand Aesthetics: A New Brand Management Approach
The aesthetic treatment of products and services is emerging as a fundamental competitive element. The notion of “brand aesthetics”, composed of stable and specific elements characterizing its « sensory approach », first introduced by the semiotician Jean-Marie Floch in 1990, can help manage brands in a more rational way. The model of the Brand Aesthetics Chain is introduced to describe the sequential process starting from a brand project up to the consumers purchase decisions. It highlights the importance of being able to manage the process upstream of the interface made of the brand manifestations and monitoring the downstream part made of the consumer’s perceptions and reactions. The aesthetic linear treatment is chosen to illustrate a case of application of the Brand Aesthetics notion. An on-line survey has been run to measure consumers’ preferences for four basic linear elements. The launch of the lighter Zippo BLU in 2007 is used to exemplify some possible use of the survey methodology and results. The article concludes with a few precise recommendations for brand managers to start implementing a Brand Aesthetics management approach.
A New Brand Manifestations Inventory For Applications Of Brand Aesthetics

In today’s fierce competitive environment, the brands that cannot distinguish themselves from competitors with the concrete features of the products have turned to brand images, which are difficult to imitate, abstract elements, in order to survive and gain competitive advantage. Brand image is shaped by the characteristics and quality of each contact or interaction between brands and customers throughout the customer journey. The origins of the brand image, which make the fundamental difference between competitors, are based on communication with customers at brand contact points. Brand aesthetics, which tackles each contact point that can be planned aesthetically as brand manifestations, aims to convey a holistic brand story to the customers in the most effective way by arranging these manifestations in a coordinated and consistent aesthetic code. It strengthens the brand identity and brand image. It is very important to know and manage brand manifestations to be esthetized by planners, in this process. Despite this significance, literature review shows there are not many studies about brand manifestations used in the context of brand aesthetics. In addition to this, differences and conflictions have been observed in the few studies on the subject. The study aims to provide a clear and understandable inventory list of brand manifestations that can be used in brand aesthetics applications to the researchers and practitioners. In this respect, on the one hand, the brand manifestations included in the current studies have been re-examined and on the other hand, the literature on brand contact points has been reviewed, the necessity for a new inventory list has been put forward due to the reasons and a current inventory list has been created and presented to the use of researchers and practitioners.
Brand Value by Design, the use of three levels of recognition in design
The design of a product acts as a carrier of various symbolic meanings. These meanings are a result of experiencing all the specific design characteristics together in the complete product. The separate design characteristics will build up to a total image, which will evoke certain associations. Some of these associations are explicit, such as ‘the angularity of a product, and some of them are more implicit, such as ‘a sophisticated design’. Those implicit values are often referring to the brand values of a company and the translation of these values is crucial for a company to develop a strong brand. However it is a quite difficult job for designers to evoke the right associations in products. The Effect of Brand on the Evaluation of Websites

Abstr act. The effect of brand on consumer attitudes towards real and virtual goods is largely documented in consumer psychology and marketing. There is an obvious link between the design of a website and its brand. Yet, this effect has attracted little attention from the HCI community. This paper presents empirical evidence showing that brand attitude influences the evaluation of websites. The effect was reliable across different measures: people holding better attitudes were more positive in the evaluation of aesthetics, pleasure and usability. A sample of students (N=145) with a background in HCI was tested, suggesting that brand may influence the output of expert evaluators. The study provides support to the proposition of UX as a contextual-dependent response to the interaction with computing systems and has important implications for the design and evaluation of websites which are discussed in the conclusion.
Designing Visual Recognition for the Brand*

The present paper examines how companies strategically employ design to create visual recognition of their brands' core values. To address this question, an explorative in-depth case study was carried out concerning the strategic design efforts of two companies: Nokia (mobile phones) and Volvo (passenger cars). It was found that these two companies fostered design philosophies that lay out which approach to design and which design features are expressive of the core brand values. The communication of value through design was modeled as a process of semantic transformation. This process specifies how meaning is created by design in a three-way relation among design features, brand values, and the interpretation by a potential customer. By analyzing the design effort of Nokia and Volvo with the help of this model, it is shown that control over the process of semantic transformation enabled managers in both companies to make strategic decisions over the type, strength, and generality of the relation between design features and brand values. Another result is that the embodiment of brand values in a design can be strategically organized around lead products. Such products serve as reference points for what the brand stands for and can be used as such during subsequent new product development (NPD) projects for other products in the brand portfolio. The design philosophy of Nokia was found to depart from that of Volvo. Nokia had a bigger product portfolio and served more market segments. It therefore had to apply its design features more flexibly over its product portfolio, and in many of its designs the relation between design features and brand values was more implicit. Six key drivers for the differences between the two companies were derived from the data. Two external drivers were identified that relate to the product category, and four internal drivers were found to stem from the companies' past and present brand management strategies. These drivers show that the design of visual recognition for the brand depends on the particular circumstances of the company and that it is tightly connected to strategic decision making on branding. These results are relevant for brand, product, and design managers, because they provide two good examples of companies that have organized their design efforts in such a way that they communicate the core values of their brands. Other companies can learn from these examples by considering why these two companies acted as they did and how their communication goals of product design were aligned to those of brand management.
