Dietary behaviour of students from Poznan universities

The problem raised in the study relates to the eating habits of students and their relations with the body mass index (BMI). The effect of selected sociodemographic variables (sex, place of residence, material status, field of study) on eating habits of the respondents was also analysed. The structure of the Dietary Behaviour Index (DBI) was proposed and its relations to the BMI were established. Material and methods. The study covered 508 students of state and private universities in Poznań (Poland) of whom 73% were female and 27% male. The study used an anonymous questionnaire poll on the basic dietary habits developed on the basis of the Food Pyramid guidelines as well as the Golden Charter of Correct Nutrition. The BMI was calculated on the students' self-reported weight and height. Results. 15% of the participating students are overweight or obese. The distribution of the BMI differs between men and women (p<.000). Particularly unfavourable behaviour was noted in terms of the consumption of legumes (72% of respondents), fish (53%), dairy products (36%), vegetables (29%) and fruit (27%). Beneficial trends relate to the everyday consumption of breakfast (63%), the number of meals per day (59%), limiting the consumption of red meat (59%), including vegetable fats in the daily diet (56%). The differences in the way of eating described by the DBI is related to the field of study (p<.001) as physical education students had the best indicators. Conclusions. In the studied group of students overweight and obesity are not as frequent as in other countries of Western Europe or America. We noted a number of dietary mistakes made by the respondents, which can lead to adverse health consequences in the future. During the university studies, not 164 | I. Attitudes of Debrecen University Students Towards Healthy Life Based on Their Dietary Habits

Our consumption habits affect our body from childhood on, changes in eating habits can lead to various eating disorders and cause problems, especially in adulthood. For this reason, we need to pay attention to what we eat and drink throughout our lives, as a close correlation is observed between consumed foods and health. The primary purpose of the study is to survey the daily eating habits of Debrecen students, to compare their regularity and composition in terms of quality in order to reveal any correlations between the BMI-based categories and the quality of consumption. In order to examine this aspect, we conducted a questionnaire survey among 500 students of the University of Debrecen. There is a significant relationship between body mass index and food groups only in the case of coffee, but there is no correlation between the degree of obesity of Debrecen students and the frequency of food consumed.

Overweight, Obesity and Dieting Attitudes Among College Students in Romania

Context. Young adults are increasingly at risk for obesity. Objectives. The aim of the study was to assess the eating attitudes and behaviors, including weight concerns and dieting behavior, among medical college students. Design. This was a case-control study. Material and methods. The sample consisted of 70 undergraduate students from the School of Medicine, 22 males and 48 females, aged 25±6 years. Eating-related behaviors were measured using the EAT-26 questionnaire. Study of food intake and physical activity was conducted using a questionnaire that included anthropometric measures, food frequency and the level of physical activity. We calculated body mass index (BMI) from students self-reported height and weight. Results. Approximately 13% of the students were overweight, and 7% were obese. Another 17% were underweight, and the remainder (63%) were of healthy weight. The results showed that 7% of the students had a positive EAT-26 score (>20) and all were females. On dieting subscale, 16% of college students scored higher; the females who reported excessive dieting attitudes were underweight or of normal weight and males were obese. Our analysis showed that students with dieting behavior report excessive exercising and consuming less cereals and meat and more vegetables as compared to non-dieting behavior group. Conclusions. The results demonstrated that disturbed eating attitudes and unhealthy dieting are common among Romanian college students, especially among females.

Effects of Knowledge on Nutrition and Eating Habits of Bilecik University Students

A problem facing youth today is the lack of available healthy fast foods or easily prepared foods. During adolescence, young people are assuming responsibility for their own eating habits, health-related attitudes and behaviours and their growing independence is often associated with unconventional eating patterns. The aim of this study was detecting the effect of knowledge on nutrition and affecting healthy food choices in Bilecik University students. Researching data were collected from 471 of Bilecik University students in 2 campuses. The deep economic and social transformation that began in Albania in the early 1990s has brought about remarkable changes to the structure of its economy and the living standards of its people. As a consequence, the dietary habits of young adults have been affected; thus, overweight and obesity are increasingly being observed among the young. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity on a sample of students from the Sports University of Tirana and to examine their eating habits. A cross-sectional survey of 80 students (57.5% male and 42.5% female), aged 18.46 years, were chosen randomly from the Sports University of Tirana (SUT) during October 2013. Students were asked to fill out a self-reported questionnaire that included questions on their eating, drinking and smoking habits. Also, their weight, height, and body mass index were measured. Body mass index (BMI) was used to assess students' weight status. This study showed that the majority of the students (78.88%) were of normal weight (73.7% male students compared to 82.6% female students). The prevalence of overweight and obesity was not common among male students compared to females (23.6% and 10.3% vs. 2.2% and 1.2%, respectively). In contrast, 5.9% female students were underweight as compared to 0.5% males. Eating habits of the students showed that the majority (70%) reported taking meals regularly. Healthier eating habits of female compared to male students in terms of daily breakfast intake are the same. 38.23% of female students reported eating breakfast daily compared to 45.65% of male students. Intake of colored vegetables and fruits was common among students. A total of 32.5% reported daily intake of colored vegetables with a small gender differences (32.35% females vs. 32.6% males). Alcohol intake to male students in terms of 2or 3 times per week was 2.17% and rarely 56.52%, while to females students was 2.94% and rarely 35.29%. Males at least 1 packet is 23.91% and rarely 15.21%, females at least 1 packet is 11.76% and rarely 5.88%. 70% of our students are never smoker. In spite of the overall low prevalence of overweight and obesity in the studied sample, results indicate that university of sport students would possibly benefit from a nutrition and health promotion program to reduce the tendency of overweight and obesity, especially among male students, and to improve students' eating habits.

Examination of Hungarian college students’ eating habits, physical activity and body composition

In recent years, undergraduates attending universities and other higher education institutions have been the focus of research. The aim of this study was to examine nutritional and other lifestyle factors of Hungarian college students. Methods: A survey was conducted on the measurement of the body weight and body fat percentages (via bioelectrical impedance analysis) of 5174 students (2116 males and 3058 females, mean age 22.7 AE 4.41 years). Data was gathered on nutrition and lifestyle using a questionnaire designed by the investigators. Results: Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage average values, both the body mass and body fat indices of the men and the women were within the normal range. Approximately a third (38.7%) ate wholemeal products only once a day. Nearly three-quarters (about 71%) reported consumption of less than two servings of raw and processed fruit and vegetables per day. Women ate significantly more vegetables, fruit, wholemeal products and sugary snacks than men (p = 0.01). The BMI and the visceral fat levels also showed significant discrepancy between the groups with different life style and food consumption habits (p < 0.001). 72.9% of the students did not smoke and 45.5% regularly did sport. Conclusion: Diet and physical activity of Hungarian university students are better than those of Hungarian adults, but further improvement and lifestyle changes are needed. 2016 Elsevier GmbH. Nutrition and Dietetics Students' Attitudes towards Obesity

The aim of this article is the investigation of Nutrition and Dietetics students' attitudes towards obesity. Since these students will be in helping position for obese people their attitudes are accepted as important. Therefore attitudes of university students who are studying nutrition and dietetics towards obesity aimed to be investigated in this study. The Obesity Prejudice Inventory which is aiming to measure negative attitudes towards obesity and developed by Ercan, Akçil Ok, Kızıltan, & Altun, (2015) was used. According to data analysis no gender or class based statistically differences significant differences have been found. According to descriptive analysis range for participants' obesity prejudice inventory mean scores have been found as 58 to 122. Mean score for whole sample has been found as 81,7. According to developers of the scale which is aiming to measure negative attitudes towards obesity mean scores above 68 shows a negative inclination towards being prejudicial. Since these students will be prospective health workers who are going to serve to people with obesity, existence of mentioned attitudes must be considered as important topics that should be included in professional education curriculums to be able to decrease possible undesirable effects on people with obesity.

Eating Habits and Standard Body Parameters Among Students at University of Banja Luka

Poor dietary habits have become one of the most important concerns among public health policy makers in recent years, due to the impact they have on both economic and health systems of a country. The transitional period toward young adulthood, marked with high school graduation and the beginning of college years, has been identified as critical in terms of its influence on young people’s bad eating habits. The aim of this study was to assess whether the results obtained through Food Frequency Questionnaire significantly correlate with standard body parameters. Participants included 210 students from the University of Banja Luka, with the mean age of 21.94 ± 2.73 years.
