Resource management framework using simulation modeling and multi-objective optimization: a case study of a front-end department of a public hospital in Thailand

BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making, 2022

Background The overcrowded patients, which cause the long waiting time in public hospitals, become significant problems that affect patient satisfaction toward the hospital. Particularly, the bottleneck usually happens at front-end departments (e.g., the triage and medical record department) as every patient is firstly required to visit these departments. The problem is mainly caused by ineffective resource management. In order to support decision making in the resource management at front-end departments, this paper proposes a framework using simulation and multi-objective optimization techniques considering both operating cost and patient satisfaction. Methods To develop the framework, first, the timestamp of patient arrival time at each station was collected at the triage and medical record department of Thammasat University Hospital in Thailand. A patient satisfaction assessment method was used to convert the time spend into a satisfaction score. Then, the simulation model was b...

A Multi-Objective Optimization Method for Hospital Admission Problem—A Case Study on Covid-19 Patients

Algorithms

The wide spread of Covid-19 has led to infecting a huge number of patients, simultaneously. This resulted in a massive number of requests for medical care, at the same time. During the first wave of Covid-19, many people were not able to get admitted to appropriate hospitals because of the immense number of patients. Admitting patients to suitable hospitals can decrease the in-bed time of patients, which can lead to saving many lives. Also, optimizing the admission process can minimize the waiting time for medical care, which can save the lives of severe cases. The admission process needs to consider two main criteria: the admission time and the readiness of the hospital that will accept the patients. These two objectives convert the admission problem into a Multi-Objective Problem (MOP). Pareto Optimization (PO) is a common multi-objective optimization method that has been applied to different MOPs and showed its ability to solve them. In this paper, a PO-based algorithm is propose...

An Optimization Model for Integrated Capacity Management and Bed Allocation Planning of Hospitals

2017

Hospitals are facing with increasing demands of unlimited needs of people health. On the other hand, due to the rising cost of healthcare services, hospitals need to put more effort in order to overcome these two problems. This paper deals with proposing an integrated strategy for solving these problems. We address an integer optimization model which integrate capacity staff management problem and bed allocation planning problem. We solve the model using a direct approach, based on the notion of superbasic variables.
