Applying ISO 21001:2018 standard ensures that universities have a competitive advantage as well as the achievement of their objectives. This study aims to identify the impact of implementing ISO 21001: 2018 management systems standards on the performance quality of higher education institutions. The study investigates the reasons why private higher education institutions seek ISO standards certificates in general and the specifications of management systems for educational institutions in particular. The study applied a set of statistical testing methods on paired samples as well as independent samples to ensure quality assurance. The study also proposes the required prerequisites that should be considered. The study investigated a hypothesis stating that "there are no statistically significant differences before and after applying the ISO 21001:2018 management systems specification for educational institutions in improving the quality of performance in higher education institutions" which was rejected by conducting an experiment in Future University in Egypt and accepting the alternative hypothesis. The study confirmed the impact of quality which was previously investigated by prior research that has been discussed in this study. The study further presented the need to apply quality based on determined criteria which were not considered in prior studies. Moreover, the study proposed the impact of ISO standards in educational institutions in general and in Egypt in specific. This recommendation is proved by this study to enhance the quality level in educational institutions.
ISO Standard Application in University Management Model: A Case Study
International Journal of Information and Education Technology, 2021
The ISO standards have been traditionally used in the business context, specifically in manufacturing and services, to provide a framework for total quality management. Such application has now been found in the context of higher education; thus, this paper aims to look into the implementation of ISO standards in the management of a private university in Vietnam. Using a desk research approach, the study seeks to detail the application of ISO in the areas of educational support system and business operation system in the strategic management of this institution, showing the quantitative operational results that have been achieved in all aspects of HR management, teaching quality, new enrollment number and financial growth.
Purpose -Quality management in Greek higher education at least until 2006 was in an early and debated stage. The intent of this paper is to present the extent of use of the ISO standards in Greek universities till 2006 and simultaneously to evaluate whether adoption of ISO-oriented quality management tools is consistent with DiMaggio and Powell's notions of isomorphism (coercive, normative, and mimetic). Design/methodology/approach -The authors employed a mixed-methods approach with sequential data collection with several alternations between quantitative and qualitative methods. Findings -It is found that ISO-oriented quality management system is fruitfully adopted in units only if all three types of neo-institutional pressures (coercive, normative and mimetic) are present. These results and the high response rate suggest that there is a quality movement at the micro level in Greek higher education. Research limitations/implications -Quality management (QM) research within the relatively uncharted Greek universities poses multiple challenges, e.g. in handling politically sensitive subjects, which may benefit readers in overcoming theirs. Originality/value -The significance of the paper lies in the fact that no existing studies have investigated the adoption of ISO-oriented quality management system in Greek universities, utilizing neo-institutional theory and a mixed method research design. Especially relevant is that the study focuses on quality management at the micro level of units within higher education institutions. The study demonstrates how to distinguish different isomorphic pressures empirically.
Critical Analysis of the Applicability of the ISO 9001 Standard in Higher Education Institutions
International Journal of African Higher Education
This paper analyses the applicability of the ISO 9001 standard in higher education institutions (HEIs). The ISO 9001standard, initially developed for application in industry, sets the requirements for implementing a quality management system (QMS) in an organisation. Over the years, the standard has been adapted to the higher education (HE) sector as a model for quality assurance and enhancement. In this study, the standard is analysed based on a framework with the following variables; 1) Importance of the philosophy of the standard in HE, 2) Suitability to HE, 3) Ease of implementation, 4) Effect on quality assurance and enhancement and 5) Effect on quality culture. The mechanisms of how the standard affects quality management are also presented. The analysis shows that ISO 9001 is based on a philosophy that resonates with general approaches to quality assurance in HEIs. The seven principles of the standard provide a good base for an effective QMS. The standard is suitable to HEIs ...
Management of higher educational institutions through standardization
Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research), 2021
Purpose: First, we determine the state of management in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in relation to ISO standards. Second, we highlight best practices to allow HEIs become certified. Methods: Based on literature review and analysis of ISO 9001 and 27001 requirements, we determine the merits of integrating standardization into HEIs management. Results: Key findings reveal improved student satisfaction and performance whereas lack of motivation and resistance to change appeared as the main challenges. Implications: This study connects ISO requirements with best practices to assist HEIs thrive in turbulent times. Future studies could examine whether ISO standards add value to knowledge discovery and creation.
Awareness and Challenges of ISO 9001:2015 Implementation in Higher Education
International Journal of Academe and Industry Research, 2022
This study assessed the awareness on the implementation of International Organization Standardization (ISO) 9001: 2015 in a university and the challenges encountered by the key stakeholders. It also tested the correlation of respondents' demographic profile to the level of awareness and challenges. The study used a descriptive research design and convenience sampling technique with a total of 100 survey participants from senior officials, professors, faculty, and non-faculty personnel. To collect responses, the study used structured survey questionnaire distributed through Google Forms. Descriptive statistics such as frequency count, percentage, and weighted mean as well as Spearman were used for data analysis. The results of the study showed that employees are 'Fully Aware' and 'Aware' on the implementation of ISO 9001:2015, particularly in terms of the quality mission, vision, and objectives. However, employees "Disagree" with the various challenges in the implementation of ISO 9001: 2015. In addition, there was no significant relationship among the respondents' profile, awareness and challenges in the implementation of ISO 9001: 2015 at the university. The study found that while university employees are usually aware of the quality management system's fundamental objectives, they normally disagree on the challenges of putting it into practice. For this, information dissemination should be done on a regular basis while the employees are obliged to also internalize the university's quality management system's vision, mission, and objectives.

It is clear that ISO 9000 Quality Management System and Total Quality Management have an extensive literature. However, it is observed that the literature principally focuses on implementation consequences of them. In this study, ISO 9000 Quality Management System certification process in a faculty of a Turkish public university is taken into consideration. However, the study focuses on not only consequences of taking this certification but also its' triggers and processes. To examine these triggers, processes and consequences, data collection methods of the study were semi-structured interviews and unstructured participative observation. In addition, extensive amount of document was used to make triangulation.

This paper examines the relationship between the ISO 9001 Total Quality Management (TQM) factors, that are presented in the Baldrige Education Criteria for Performance Excellence framework (leadership, strategic planning, stakeholder and market focus, measurement and analysis, staff focus and process management), and the seventh element which is the operational performance results. The study, which was conducted at the Buraimi University College of Oman, showed that TQM is applicable to higher education according to the perception of the staff members. The study also showed that leadership, stakeholder and market focus and staff focus have a significant positive influence on operational performance of higher education. The results agreed with the literature findings that the success of TQM appears to be determined by intangible or soft practices rather than tangible or hard practices.
