Towards new π-conjugated systems for photovoltaic applications
2016
Among renewable energies, the sunlight has by far the highest theoretical potential to meet the worldwide need in energy. Photovoltaic devices are thus currently the subject of intense research for low-cost conversion of sunlight into electrical power. In particular, organic photovoltaics have emerged as an interesting alternative to produce electricity due to their low manufacturing cost compared to silicon solar cells, their mechanical flexibility and the versatility of the possible chemical structures. In this dissertation, we focused our research on the development of new organic pi-conjugated materials for organic solar cells applications. Two types of solar cells have been studied during this work: bulk heterojunction and dye-sensitized solar cells. The charge transfer leading to the photocurrent is usually based on (i) a polymer donor and a fullerene acceptor in BHJ solar cells, such as the widely studied poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ...
Molecular and supramolecular engineering of π-conjugated systems for photovoltaic conversion
Thin Solid Films, 2006
Various series of conjugated systems have been used as donor in hetero-junction solar cells. The results obtained with EDOT-containing kconjugated oligomers show that besides their direct effect on the electronic properties of the conjugated chain, the number and position of the EDOT units control to a large extent the orientation of the molecules on the substrate and hence the performances of the derived solar cells. The characteristics of the cells based on oligothienylenevinylenes donors show that in this case structural control of orientation can be achieved by means of substitution of the conjugated structure by alkyl chains.
Concept of Organic Photovoltaics: Operational Principles and Materials
Acta Electrotechnica et Informatica, 2013
Organic molecules possessing a π-conjugated (hetero)aromatic backbone are capable of transporting charge and interact efficiently with light. Therefore, these systems can act as semiconductors in opto-electronic devices similar to inorganic materials. However, organic chemistry offers tools for tailoring materials' functional properties via modifications of the molecular units, opening new possibilities for inexpensive device manufacturing. In this presentation, we discuss exploitation of such organic molecular systems in photovoltaics; the operation, advantages, and limitations of molecular donor-acceptor heterojunction structures.

The research in the short-chain organic -conjugated molecules has become one of the most interesting topics in the fields of chemistry. These compounds have become the most promising materials for the optoelectronic device technology. The use of low band gap materials is a viable method for better harvesting of the solar spectrum and increasing its efficiency. The control of the band gap of these materials is a research issue of ongoing interest. In this work, a quantum chemical investigation has been performed to explore the optical and electronic properties of a series of different short-chain compounds based on thiophene. Different electron side groups were introduced to investigate their effects on the electronic structure. The theoretical knowledge of the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the components is basic in studying organic solar cells, so, the HOMO, LUMO, Gap energy and the photovoltaic properties of the studied compounds have been calculated and reported. These properti...

The continuous increase in the global energy demand deeply impacts the environment. Consequently, the research is moving towards more sustainable forms of energy production, storage and saving. Suitable technologies and materials are fundamental to win the challenge towards a greener and more eco-friendly society. Organic π-conjugated materials, including small molecules, oligomers and polymers are a wide and versatile class of functional materials with great potentiality, as they can be used as active matrixes in the fabrication of lightweight, flexible, cheap and large area devices. Their chemical and physical properties, both at a molecular level and mainly in the solid state, are a result of many factors, strictly related to the conjugated structure and functional groups on the backbone, which control the intermolecular forces driving solid state aggregations. The synthesis, through the molecular design, the choice of conjugated backbone and functionalization, represents the fir...
THEORETICAL STUDY OF NEW CANDIDATE ORGANIC MATERIALS FOR PHOTOVOLTAIC APPLICATIONS
Granthaalayah Publications and Printers, 2023
Our work consists of a theoretical prediction, through DFT and TD-DFT methods, of the electronic and optical properties of six conjugated organic compounds used as electron donor materials in BHJ solar cells, of which PCBM is the acceptor material. This study is necessary to discuss the effect of substituents (donor units) on the different properties of these compounds, and to predict promising materials in organic solar cells using the AMPS-1D simulation software. The results obtained show that all the molecules have good geometric, electronic, and optical properties, thus showing an increase in the power conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells based on these materials, which reaches a value of 17% for the molecule P-Eth-TEdotT-A.
Factors Limiting the Efficiency of Molecular Photovoltaic Devices
Physical Review B, 2004
We present a simple model of a molecular photovoltaic device consisting of a two-level system, connected to external contacts by chains of one or more charge transporting orbitals. Electrons may be promoted in the two-level system by photon absorption, and charge transported to the external circuit by electron transfer between neighboring orbitals. Photon absorption and emission are described by a generalized Planck equation and electron transfer is described by nonadiabatic Marcus theory. We find the steady-state current by solving the set of coupled rate equations for electron transfer in the system under illumination as a function of bias applied to the contacts. We calculate monochromatic current-voltage characteristics and power conversion efficiency as a function of the system size, orbital energy levels, and electron transfer rates, and compare with the monochromatic detailed balance limit. Using realistic values of the energy levels and charge-transfer rates, we are able to reproduce a number of commonly observed features in the current-voltage characteristics. These include a ''kink'' in the current-voltage curve close to open circuit when large interfacial energy steps are present or mobilities are low, and a reduction of the open-circuit voltage and crossing of the light and dark current curves when interfacial recombination is strong. We show that open-circuit voltage is dominated by the acceptor-donor energy gap when recombination is important, and by the optical gap when recombination is low. We confirm previous reports that photovoltaic energy conversion can be achieved by interfacial asymmetry alone and that a potential difference between the electrodes is unnecessary. Improved photovoltaic efficiency of molecular heterojunctions requires ohmic contacts, improved charge-carrier mobilities, and tuning of the electron-transfer rates at the heterojunction. Maximizing the rate of charge separation does not necessarily lead to maximum efficiency.
First-principles approach to the understanding of π-conjugated organic semiconductors
Monatshefte für Chemie - Chemical Monthly, 2008
We show how ab initio calculations based on density functional theory contribute to the understanding of the electronic and optical properties of organic semiconducting materials, which form the active layers in many opto-electronic applications. As a textbook example, we present the electronic structure and the optical properties of the oligo-phenylenes as evolving from their benzene-constituents. Thereby we discuss the dependence on the molecular length and introduce the modifications in the opto-electronic properties due to intermolecular interactions which are inherently present in the bulk phase.
Photovoltaic devices fabricated with a p-type conjugated multi-branched molecules
Synthetic Metals, 2009
New multi-branched crystalline molecules were synthesized through Horner(Emmons reactions using hexyl-substituted thiophene-based carbaldehydes as dendrons and [1,2,4,5-tetra-(diethoxyphosphorylmethyl)-benzyl]-phosphonic acid diethyl ester as the core unit. 1,2,4,5-Tetrakis((E)-2-(5hexyl-2,2-bithiophen-5-yl)vinyl)benzene (HPBT) and 1,2,4,5-tetrakis((E)-2-(5-dodecyl-2,2-bithiophen-5-yl)vinyl)benzene (DPBT) have different alkylene peripheral moities such as the hexyl and dodecyl group. The molecules were employed to fabricate organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells with methanofullerene [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). As a result, HPBT-based bulk heterojunction with PCBM exhibited higher short-circuit current density and open circuit voltage, resulting in a higher power conversion efficiency of around 0.944%.

Four donor-acceptor functionalized molecular materials with symmetrical structures have been synthesized and investigated for their use in optoelectronic applications. These pi-conjugated molecules consist of one electron-donating moiety, for instance, carbazole, triphenylamine, or phenothiazine at the center, and two acceptors at each side. Introduction of different donor moieties decreases the band gaps allowing a fine-tuning of the optical and electrical properties. These materials exhibit multifunctional properties, such as a red light-emitting behavior and a large photovoltaic effect. Red organic light-emitting diodes were fabricated in a facile nondoping configuration based on these materials. Saturated red-emission is observed with a CIE of x = 0.64 and y = 0.33, and an external quantum efficiency of 0.19%. In addition, our first observation of photovoltaic response in the pi-conjugated molecule with donor-acceptor-donor structure is reported. The organic single-component pho...
