According to WHO data, only around 20% of adolescents participate in physical activity (PA) during their free time. The social context can act as a support for adolescents to do PA, given the effect that both parents, friends and teachers have on young people’s behaviour owing to the large amount of time and influence they have on them. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyse the role of the social context on adolescents’ motivation to practise PA and their intention to be physically active. This study involved the participation of students in compulsory and post-compulsory secondary education. Exercise motivation in university community members: a behavioural intervention

The purpose of this study was to examine how exercise level, exercise motives, and barriers changed from the baseline phase to the follow-up phase after a behavioural and cognitive intervention aimed at increasing exercise. Seventy-five members of our university community (43 subjects in the control group and 32 in the experimental group), all of whom received cognitive feedback, agreed to complete the baseline phase. Only the experimental group received behavioural feedback and a free-access gym ticket with personal training in order to facilitate their adherence to exercise. The results suggest that a combination of behavioural and psychological techniques is an efficient strategy for increasing exercise level. In addition, the results showed that extrinsic motivation predominates the early stages of change-of-exercise behaviour, and that intrinsic motivation is important for progression towards maintenance. An Extended Model of Theory of Planned Behaviour in Predicting Exercise Intention

The main purpose of the present study was to propose and test an extended model with the addition of perceived need in predicting exercise participation, drawing upon the theory of planned behaviour. Cross-sectional data was collected via self-administered surveys from general adults sample (n = 217). The instrument was first validated using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to test for unidimensionality, convergent and discriminant validity. Model and hypotheses testing were performed using structural equation modelling (SEM). The extended model accounted for a substantial portion of the variance in exercise intention (R 2 = 0.798). Specific findings revealed that: (1) all predictors were significantly correlated with exercise intention; (2) attitude components, perceived control, and perceived need predicted exercise intention; (3) instrumental attitude emerged as the strongest predictor of intention. This study has important implications for marketing practitioners, consumer researchers, and public policy makers interested in the determinants of exercise participation.

Despite the physical and mental health benefits of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), only about half of college students participate in the recommended amount of LTPA. While college students are avid users of social network sites (SNSs), whether SNSs would be an effective channel for promoting LTPA through peer social support is unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of social support from students&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; contacts on SNSs on their intention to participate in LTPA, applying the Theory of Planned Behavior. Participants were recruited through a mass e-mail sent to undergraduate students at a large Midwestern university in fall 2011. In total, 439 surveys were analyzed. Descriptive analyses and analysis for mediating effects were conducted. Social support about LTPA from contacts on SNSs has indirect effect on intention through affective attitude, instrumental attitude, and perceived behavioral control (PBC). The results indicate that social support about LTPA from contacts on SNSs might not be effective to change students&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; intention unless attitudes and PBC are changed. Future interventions aiming to promote students&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; intention to participate in LTPA by increasing support from contacts on SNSs should increase affective attitude, instrumental attitude, and PBC at the same time.

This research was carried out to investigate the influence of the teenagers’ social supports gained that cause overall changes behaviors of them towards physical activity at the edge of the city within the district of Muar, Johor Darul Takzim. Samples of the research was total of 200, 118 of the male students and 82 of female students with age of 14.3 (SD =1.491). The result showed that the influence of the social supports to teenagers specifically on their involvement with physical activities make most significant (P < 0.05) consisted environment factors, physical activity benefits, self-efficacy and the barriers as well. The finding contributed implication of teenagers’ behavior changes with involvement with physical activities. Suggestion future research through qualitative with longitudinal method.

This study aims to investigate intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence the involvement of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) students to participate in physical activity. A total of 400 UKM students comprising 200 men and 200 women were used as the main respondents in this research. The questionnaire used to examine the intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors that influence involvement of students to perform physical activity was adapted from Exercise Motivations Inventory. The study found that the highest mean value of the intrinsic factors are health and fitness (M = 4.37), while for extrinsic factors are factors peers and friends (M = 3.97). The findings also show that there are significant differences in the involvement of intrinsic motivation factors motivated health and fitness (t =-5.05, p < 0.05) and body-related factors (t =-6.51, p < 0.05) by gender. As for the extrinsic motivation only the family (t =-6.98, p <0.05) showed significant differences by gender. Further, this study shows that intrinsic motivation body related (52%) is a motivating factor that contributed mostly to the impact of student involvement and as for extrinsic motivation factors shows that the role of the University (40%) is the highest factor contributing to student engagement. The findings of this study will hopefully help the University Sports Centre and UKM to provide activities, seminars and amenities to attract and provide an overview of the importance of a healthy culture among students.
