Mouth Dissolving Tablets-A Review
Oral delivery is currently the gold standard in the pharmaceutical industry where it is regarded to be safe, economical, easy to form and the most important is the patient compliance. Other various dosage forms are also available in the market which are used to prevent, care and treat the diseases. But the tablets are most popular among all the dosage forms existing because of its ease of administration, rigidness and patient compliance. But many patients express difficulty in swallowing tablets so to overcome this problem recent advances in drug delivery has expressed dosage forms which disintegrates rapidly when placed upon tongue usually within a matter of second's i.e in 60 secs. These are novel dosage forms which dissolve in saliva within a few seconds, when put on tongue. MDTs can be administered anywhere and anytime, without the need of water and are thus quite suitable for children, elderly and mentally disabled patients.
Mouth Dissolving Tablets -An Overview
Mouth dissolving tablets (MDT) have received ever increasing demand during last decade and It is a rapidly a growing area in the pharmaceutical industry. After introduction into the mouth these tablets dissolve or disintegrate in the mouth and leaving an easy to swallow residue. Novel MDTs address the patient and pharmaceutical needs of convenient dosing particularly for busy or traveling patient, pediatric, geriatric and psychiatric patients who have difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia) conventional tablets and capsules. These tablets also have faster onset of action due to buccal absorption of the drug. The popularity and usefulness of the formulation resulted in development of several MDT Technologies. It is expected that this delivery system will get more importance in future as that of conventional delivery systems.
Fast Dissolving Tablets: A Review
International Journal of Current Pharmaceutical Research, 2017
Fast dissolving tablets emerge as one of the popular and widely accepted dosage forms, especially for pediatric patients because of incomplete development of the muscular and nervous system and a case of geriatric patients suffering from Parkinson’s disorder or hand tremors. Few solid dosage forms like capsules and tablets are present days facing the problems like difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia), resulting in many incidences of non-compliance and making the therapy ineffective. Oral dosage form and oral route are the most preferred route of administration for various drugs have limitations like first-pass metabolism, psychiatric patients, bedridden and uncooperative patients. FDTs are disintegrating or dissolve quickly in the saliva without a need of water. Fast dissolving tablets are designed to dissolve in saliva remarkably faster, within a few seconds (less than 60 seconds), and those are real fast-dissolving tablets. FDTs formulations contain super disintegrants to enhance ...
A review on fast dissolving tablets (FDTs)
The oral route is the most acceptable routes among the various routes for different age group of the patients because it is regarded as safest, most convenient and economical route. Therefore, recently researcher and pharmaceutical companies developed the fast dissolving tablet (FDT) by modifying the physiochemical parameter of drugs to their need with improved patient compliance and convenience. FDTs are solid dosages forms which dissolve rapidly in saliva without chewing and additional water. USFDA define FDTs to be the solid oral preparation that disintegrate rapidly in the oral cavity with an in-vitro disintegration time of 30 seconds or less. FDTs improved patient compliance and also overcome the disadvantages of conventional dosage form especially dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing) in pediatric and geriatric patients. Over the last decade FDTs have grown steadily in demand and importance as a convenient, potentially safer alternative to conventional tablets and capsules. The growing importance for this is due to the potential advantages offered by this technology for various kinds of patients suffering from different diseases and disabilities. This review includes ideal properties, characteristics, challenges in formulation, suitability of drug candidates, various technologies developed for FDT, patented technologies, evaluation methods and various marketed products.
MOUTH DISSOLVING TABLETS: AS A POTENTIAL DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM - A REVIEW Review Article
2011
In the present scenario, there is an ever increasing demand for more patient compliant dosage forms. One of an important innovation in this direction is the development of mouth dissolving tablets that dissolve or disintegrate instantly upon contact with recipient’s tongue or buccal mucosa. They have proved to be ideal for geriatric and pediatric population, people suffering from dysphagia, clinical conditions where water intake is not available and for drugs undergoing high first pass metabolism. Mouth dissolving tablets (MDT) are the one which suit the concept of better patient compliance, rapid absorption, rapid onset of action, more efficacy, enough bioavailability to show required pharmacological action and less toxicity. It is found that about 26% of patients experience difficulty to swallow the solid dosage forms like tablets and capsules etc. MDTs show rapid disintegration or dissolution in no time through various mechanisms when placed over the tongue without the need of wa...
Fast Dissolving Tablets: As a Preferred Alternative to conventional tablets
AEGAEUM JOURNAL, 2020
Improvement of patient's compliance has always a challenge towards the development of oral drug delivery system. Recent advances in Novel Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS) aim was to manufacture and administrate patients convenient dosage form. It was said to be a best alternative to conventional dosage to the patients having swallowing problems, psychic, paediatrics, geriatric and bedridden , unconscious patients. FDTs are solid with liquid unit dosage forms, which disintegrate or dissolve rapidly(within or less than 60 min) in the mouth without chewing and water. In particular, this review describes in detail on FDT mechanisms, Properties of FDT, advantages and disadvantages, ingredients used in dosage, evaluation, FDT technologies (based on lyophilization, molding, sublimation, and compaction, spray drying), rescent trends on FDT and case study on FDT.

Due to the oral route's comfort, convenience, and patient compliance, it is the most important and advised method for administering medications. The typical oral unit dosage form that is most frequently employed is the tablet. The patients experience problems swallowing during pill administration. Tablets called mouth dissolving tablets (MDTs) that quickly dissolve in the mouth without the need of water can lessen this issue. As a new drug delivery system, MDTs have begun to acquire recognition and appeal. By developing a simple-to-use dosage form that will increase compliance, they hope to increase the safety and efficiency of therapeutic molecules. For individuals with dysphasia, such as children, the elderly, and those who are mentally ill, mouth dispersing medications are becoming more reliable. The introduction, benefits, drawbacks, excipients employed, different formulation procedures, and evaluation factors are all covered in this review.
