ADHD children have some special education needs. Participation of parents in the process plays an essential role in the effectiveness of education. Determination of the educational expectations of parents of children with special status in parent education, which is part of lifelong education, and preparation of education programs in line with these needs are of great importance for the development of the society. The aim of the research in this direction is to determine the educational needs of parents with ADHD children. In addition, determining stress and quality of life constitutes the other sub-objectives of the research. A mixed model is used in the study. Through special education teachers 200 parents (110 mothers and 90 fathers) were reached. "Beach Centre Family Quality of Life Scale", "Perceived Stress Level Scale" and "Tool for Determining Parent Needs" were used for quantitative data. According to the obtained results, the stress level of parents is a significant predictor of quality of life (β=-.204, t=-2.738, p< .01). Among these parents, semi-structured interviews were held with 15 volunteers. Case study was conducted for qualitative data. The answers given to the questions in line with the themes formed by the researcher were examined. With qualitative data, it was found that parents felt emotional disability, had negative experiences with the environment, and that the child had difficulty in solving school problems. In addition, when the responses were examined, it was seen that participants often needed practical training (f= 12) to solve the problem. When the literature is examined, the research findings are similar to other findings indicating that having a child with ADHD brings some difficulties. Preparation of education programs answering to the needs of parents has been proposed.

Objectives: The current study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of the parents of children with ADHD towards this disorder in Tabriz, Iran. Materials and Methods: The current cross-sectional study evaluated 295 parents of children and adolescents with ADHD referred to psychiatric clinics of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. The subjects were diagnosed based on Kiddie schedule for affective disorders and schizophrenia for school-aged children (K-SADS) and recruited according to a convenience sampling method in the first five months of 2014. The parents' knowledge and attitude towards ADHD was studied by a researcher-made questionnaire. Results: The overall knowledge of parents was 66% in which 76.72% were aware of related signs and symptoms and 43.38% were able to identify the aberrations. Meanwhile, 44.62% of the parents knew the etiology and 54.75% had information about treatment strategies. In addition, 33.55%, 37.91%, 25.52% were aware of ADHD consequences, diagnosis and prevalence dimensions, respectively. Moreover, 82.72% of the parents had a positive attitude towards ADHD. A positive correlation was found between parents' attitude towards ADHD and their overall knowledge (identification, etiology, treatment, consequences and prevalence dimensions), ranging from 0.12 to 0.36 (P < 0.50). Age, gender, and place of residence did not have a correlation with parents' knowledge and attitude towards ADHD. Parent's education level only had a positive correlation with the knowledge of symptoms, with a value of 0.19 (P < 0.01). Parents with a higher overall knowledge, knowledge of ADHD symptoms, and prevalence rates accepted combination therapy (P < 0.05). Conclusions: While the overall knowledge of parents regarding ADHD was favorable, they were mostly unable to identify the aberrations in children with ADHD. These results may help practitioners address pitfalls in parent management training programs.

This study adopted a descriptive survey method to investigate the views of parents on education and healthcare services provided to the children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and help them explain their views in their own words. The sample was composed of 25 parents of children diagnosed with ADHD, who were attending primary schools in Konya city center. A semi-structured interview form was used for parent interviews. The data were analysed through content analysis. The results revealed that according to the parents' views, the service provided to the children mostly included either healthcare or education services, but a very little number of children received both services. The great majority of the families stated that the medicines that their children were prescribed increased their attention; however, negatively affected their social development. The parents expressed their opinion that a training programme for parents should be arranged and multimodal interventions should be provided.
