Child Abuse and Prostitution Phenomena: Critical Issues in Nigeria's Sustainable Development
Public Health Journal, 2015
It needs not be gainsaid that the reality of the issues of child abuse and prostitution are irrefutable phenomena in Nigeria as in many developing and developed nations of the world as studies have shown. This development has become such a worrisome menace which besides negating the fundamental rights and dignity of the child as endorsed by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989 also has diverse associated implications. The concern generated by this development is predicated on the consciousness of the significant position of children in the family and society as the future generation, leaders of tomorrow and potential flag-bearers of any nation, who need to be properly cared for and nurtured and as such provided the enabling environment to develop their potentials for such enormous responsibilities. Hence, the abuse and exposure of a child to prostitution has devastating consequences for both the individual child and the society at large; and undermining such consequences can result in serious far-reaching problems not just to the individual but the larger society. Although a number of factors may be adduced as accounting for this sordid development, which manifests in diverse peculiar dimensions as shall be highlighted in the course of the study, other vital concerns that equally provoke serious consideration include the increasing prevalence of the phenomena; the seeming apathy or insensibility of the society over their devastating consequences, as well as the urgent steps that need to be taken or accelerated to tackle the ugly development. To address the foregoing, the study shall critically examine these phenomena as to provide a proper platform to understand the dimensional intricacies of the issues involved and as such raise our consciousness on the urgent necessity to forge a common bond against the insidious threat posed by the phenomena.
RELIGION AS A PRETEXT FOR THE ABUSE OF THE NIGERIAN CHILD
Child abuse under the guise of any religion, like child abuse occasioned by any other factors, is morally reprehensible but common practice in Nigeria. However, its prevalence calls for all hands to be on deck for its total eradication. Injustices, oppression, battery, incidences of wickedness, are prevalent and obviously against religious norms, which teach wholeness, peace, liberty, emancipation and justice. It is against this background that we highlight in this paper the various manifestations of child abuse in Nigeria, within this context, with the aim of soliciting efforts towards its eradication to the world stage, for global attention and possible collaboration.
The Religio – Cultural Context of Girl-Child Trafficking in Nigeria
Review of European Studies, 2014
Trafficking in persons (TIP) is recorded to be the second greatest money-spinner the world over after arms trafficking. Human Trafficking is one of the thriving illegal businesses in Nigeria today. It entails all forms of sexual exploitation, abuse and forced labour. Girl-child trafficking in particular is a common phenomenon in Nigeria. Nigerian girls are being trafficked to Italy, Mali, Libya, Morocco, and other countries in droves, for prostitution. The major factor responsible for this crime in Nigeria is poverty coupled with weak enforcement of the Child Right Act, ignorance, greed, illiteracy, collapse of family values and increase in violence against women. The study attempts to investigate the experiences of some of the victims of Trafficking who have returned to Nigerian and have since been reunited with their families as reported in the various daily newspapers and magazine. It also attempts to look into how the dignity and rights of the girl-child can be established through proper education and reorientation of both parents and children. There is need to protect the interests of the girl-child and promote their rights through public awareness and proper education.
Child trafficking in Nigeria: Causes, consequences and the way forward
The paper focuses on the scourge of child trafficking in Nigeria as a risen factor despite numerous efforts put in place by the Nigerian government to fight against the menace. Apart from the fact that Nigeria is a signatory to many international and regional instruments set out to fight against child trafficking, there exist also some domestic laws enacted by the government to fight the practices. This notwithstanding, the effects and consequences of child trafficking in Nigeria is still having its toll on children, who are indeed the future leaders in their family and the society at large. The aim of the paper is to discuss the child trafficking, causes, consequences and a solution to the issues. It also forms the aims of the paper in discussing the combination of the causes such as Poverty, ignorance, greed, peer pressure and manipulation of religion among others have been identified as the major causes of child trafficking in Nigeria, but very little attention has been given to these important factors. The methodology of the paper adopted is doctrinal and non-doctrinal, wherein relevant literature have been analysed. The findings of the paper reveal that the causes are quite enormous and rich that have underscore the natural obligation in the social and moral context of humanity within the national law and the entire global Covenants and further recommends that the government should view this causes and its resulting effect as a catalyst to the development of a nation and its laws of humanity.
Criminal Exploitation of Children in Contemporary Nigeria
The free economic system has created the opportunity for the exploitation of children in modern Nigeria. Children are now the tools of income generation for the parents. This problem has become unprecedented compared to what is obtainable in the traditional social structure of Nigeria, when children were seen as "economic tools" for further production of wealth by parents on farm. This study is underpinning by the Merton's strain theory and social stratification theory by Max. Lagos, Nigeria served as the study location. In-depth interviews were conducted among eight hundred and eighty (880) respondents in four Local Government Areas in the State. This paper examines critically the socio-political and economic factors that encourage child exploitation in Nigeria. It equally looks at the socio-economic characteristics of children involved in child labour and also examines the economic motive behind the exploitation of children. "Child Witches": Sexual Exploitation and Abuse of Homeless Girls in South-Southern Nigeria
Dignity: A Journal on Sexual Exploitation and Violence, 2021
Sexual exploitation and abuse of girls is one of the endemic social problems in Nigeria. Although this problem has attracted much research attention in recent times, some newly emerged factors contributing to the problem have been mostly ignored. This study explored how the abandonment of children following their stigmatization as witches contributes to sexual exploitation and abuse of the girls in the Akwa Ibom and Cross River states of Nigeria. The study was based on the qualitative research paradigm. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews of three senior staff members of the Child’s Rights and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN)—a children’s charity that manages a shelter for children abandoned as witches. Thematic analysis was conducted and five principal themes were developed from the data, which are (1) vulnerable to statutory rape; (2) living with sexual addiction; (3) targeted for human trafficking; (4) vulnerable to infections and pregnancy; and (5) exposed to intergenerational abuse. Theme (1) is concerned with how the girls are frequently raped by different groups of men due to the girls’ presence on the street. Theme (2) shows how the girls struggle with sexual addiction following frequent exposure to sexual activities since the early years of their lives. Theme (3) details how human traffickers target the girls for the sex trade, labor and other purposes. Theme (4) shows how the girls struggle with sexually transmitted infections and sometimes, pregnancy. Theme (5) details how the stigmatization and the consequent abuse of the stigmatized girls on the street also extend to their children, who are automatically regarded as the children of witches. Recommendations were made on how to address this social problem.

In addition, the information gathered was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences.
