Data Warehousing of Solid Minerals in Nigeria: A Study of South South Region Nigeria

In recent years, decision support systems otherwise called Data Warehouse have become an integral part of organization's decision making strategy. Organizations thessdays are competing in the globalmarket. In order for any organization to gain competitive advantage over the others and also to help make better decisions, Data warehousing cum Data Mining are now playing a significant role in strategic decision making, nationally and globally. It helps in better decisions, streamline work-flows, and provide better customer services. This paper gives the report about developing data warehouse for solid minerals in Nigeria, using a model of management system as a case study to capture solid minerals in the South South Region of Nigeria. It describes the process of data warehouse design and development using Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services. It also outlines the development of a data cube as well as application of Online Analytical processing (OLAP) tools and Data mining tools in data analysis. It was concluded that the effective use of Data-Warehousing and Datamining in solid minerals resource management system will promote the rapid growth of the Nigerian economy and offer information on past, present and future prosects of mineral deposits, identification, exploitation, exploration and utilization for economic development.
ASEAN Mineral Resources Information System using FOSS and OGC-based standards

Highly accessible mineral resources information encourages investment and more sustainable utilization of mineral resources. The Geological Survey of Japan, AIST developed the web based ASEAN Mineral Resources Information System using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards. The use of FOSS and OGC compliant standards aims to make the mineral resources information system cost efficient, interoperable and user friendly. The developed system is composed of 3 modules which are the Database, Web Services and the Web Portal. The Database module is mainly PostGIS, a PostGreSQL open source object-relational database management system software. It supports simple features defined by OGC and simple Sequential Query Language (SQL). The Database module is a distributed database system comprising the individual mineral resources database of each country in the ASEAN region. It also includes the database of the geological map of East Asia and some ASTER and ALOS satellite images of the Geological Survey of Japan. The Web Service module is composed of the Web Processing Service (WPS) and Web Map Service (WMS). WPS handles the database maintenance and queries, including the data upload and download. WMS provides remote access to the mineral resources databases. It generates map images to be displayed on the Web Portal module. The Web Portal Module provides the web based Graphic User Interface (GUI) of the developed information system. It could also display map images provided by the Web Services module. The portal is named the ASOMM WebGIS system. This project aims to make mineral resources information in the ASEAN region easily available for use by policy makers, investors and the general public.
Design and Implementation of a Web-Based Geotechnical Database Management System for Nigerian Soils

A web-based geotechnical database management system (GDBMS) is developed for Nigerian soils. The point database (GeoDataNigeria) comprises the results of soil tests and observations from past soil investigations by different researchers and from diverse sources, with a view to maximizing the economic and scientific benefits of such test results by ensuring their unlimited accessibility. Adequate web interface is provided without limitations to all members of the public to query, report and visualize the data contained within the database. The system is designed to be infinitely extensible as managed by authorized administrators. Appropriate data templates are therefore provided for data submission while ensuring data integrity and accuracy before inclusion in the database. The data are stored raw without any pre-analysis, giving the potential users the freedom to make their own independent deductions from them. Recommendations are made for the establishment of a Geotechnical Data Centre to enhance the sustainable management and continual expansion of the database.
RWANDA MINING RIGHT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

ABSTRACT This research was conducted in order to solve the problems covering Rwandan mining industry in its management system. The purpose of this project is to implement Rwanda mining Right Management System (R.M.R.M.S) for Mining sector in Rwanda which include in the Rwandan Geology and Mines Department, the mining sector regulatory body within the Ministry of Natural Resources (MINIRENA). The main objective of this project is to implement a web based application that provides the online request for mining licenses to the mining companies (miner) who have register to the system from different location of Rwanda. This system will efficiently and effectively help all company make their business in mining sector to request for mining licenses provided by MINIREMA through different department of Rwandan government which are local government and central government. The achievement of this objective is described in the current project within its phases such as requirement gathering, analysis, design, and implementation and testing. This project gives definition and theoretical concept of a web based application; provides both theoretical and practical conception of Rwanda Mining Right Management System (R.M.R.M.S). In the analysis and design of the software, we used the Structured System Analysis and design (SSADM). To implementing the software, PHP technology was used, and MYSQL served us as RDBMS. The software developed was found that it meets all mentioned problems. Hence we found that our objectives were successful achieved.
Application of Geographic Information System for Mineral Exploration in Nigeria
Delineation and evaluation of mineral resources are major exploration parameters required for investment decisions. In Nigeria, however, there is acute shortage of such data to ensure rapid mineral development. Recent integration of exploration data with GIS, supported by intelligent systems, has greatly enhanced the acquisition, analysis and interpretation of complex problems of probabilities and decisions involved in mineral projects. Geophysical studies and mineral reserves estimation have been undertaken to illustrate major areas of GIS application in Nigeria's mineral industry. Resistivity profiles from Ungwar-Doka and Rafin-Gabas, North-central part of Nigeria, were digitized into GIS to delineate tourmaline and chalcopyrite resources. Drill-hole data from Malori and Gurjaji in northeastern Nigeria were used to generate isopach maps of gypsum quantities from which the reserves were calculated. The results demonstrate the potential of the GIS in speedy and reliable execution of mineral exploration projects.
Database Creation of a Development Project Inbauchi Town, Nigeria
A method is presented on the conversion of analogue cadastre to digital format, which is simple, faster and easy to use than the analogue method that is difficult to access and vulnerable to wear and tear. In addition to the digital map, development of cadastral database that allow querying of information is produced. This is convenient to both land managers and land ownerswho would want to know the current conditions of their plots. Utility managers could also find this useful by knowing additional information on each plot a priori. It is suggested that web-based GIS could facilitate even more on access to cadastral information.

This paper introduces the technique of mineral resources information management and distribution. It is a Web-based Mineral Information System of Thailand using FOSS and OGC based web services and standards. It distributes the geospatial content on the web through the formulation of web services such as WMS and WPS, launched on a customized WebGIS portal. The web-based mineral information system plays a critical role in the national dissemination of mineral information. It also supports the activities of the WGMID of the ASOMM. The approaches of sharing mineral resources information, formulation of web services, and the setting up of a WebGIS portal for mineral information processing and dissemination are presented. The primary advantages of these approaches are its cost efficiency in the development and system maintenance, and the applicability of the server software and web-based system to other geosciences fields.

Participation in SIWES since its inception has become a necessary precondition for the award certificates in specific disciplines especially Engineering, Sciences and other Technology related disciplines in most tertiary institutions across Nigeria, in accordance with the education policy of government. Nigeria has about 200 tertiary institutions which include Universities, Polytechnics, and college of educations. With over 200 tertiary institutions (Universities, Polytechnics, and College of Educations) across the country operating on different academic calendar, the number of students that participate in SIWES from Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education is within the range of 15000 to 25000 yearly for a minimum of 4 to 6 month; the ITF is task with managing and maintaining the record. For such reasons, most of the ITF area offices across the 36 states of the country and SIWES offices in the institutions all over the country have a collection of manual files and registers to store a record of students embarking on the skill acquisition exercise from these institutions across the country every year. The existing system is characterized by the manual approach of record-keeping, and feature an inappropriate flow of information within the separate unit of the ITF. Students are issued with SIWES Letter of introduction from their department, which is obtained. Students submit acceptance letters obtained from their proposed area of industrial attachment and are issued with a form to record their bank account details and form 8 which usually comes after students have gone on industrial training. The weakness of the existing system, are: Delay inflow of information between various units involves in SIWES coordination. Presence of redundant information. The procedure for obtaining SIWES forms is stressful. The procedure of managing student's record is prone to error. The proposed system was developed to run on a remote server using web technology and will be accessed by the users using a web browser such as Mozilla, Opera, and Chrome or internet explorer. The new system will feature a friendly graphical user interface for interacting with the users; the system will feature a security subsystem that will be used to authenticate a user requesting access into the system. The proposed system has 5 different types of interface for interacting with the system each of which grants specific access right to the operations the users can perform. They are Student interface, Departmental interface, Institution interface, State area office interface and national interface. The implementation of this system requires the use of web technology and web development language in particular PHP. The front-end of the system is developed using basic HTML, CSS and JavaScript while at the back-end, PHP for server interaction and MySQL is used for the data structure.
