SOCIAL MEDIA AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS.

The purpose of this research study is to examine the influence of Social Media and Academic Performance Of students in University of Lagos. Five Research questions and five Research hypotheses guided the study. To achieve this, the descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study focused on University of Lagos hence, population consists of all the 24,661 full-time undergraduate students. The simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 378 students. A four point Likert Type Rating Scale Questionnaire type, titled: Social Media and Academic Performance of Students Questionnaire (SMAAPOS) was used to collect data from the participants. The descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentage, were used to analyze the demographic data while inferential statistics of Chi-square(x2) was used in testing the research hypotheses. Research findings showed that a great number of students in University of Lagos, are addicted to social media. To this end, the researcher recommended that social media should be used for educational purposes as well; Social Networking Sites should be expanded and new pages should be created to enhance academic activities and avoid setbacks in the students’ academic performance; and Students should be monitored by teachers and parents on how they use these sites This is to create a balance between social media and academic activities of students to avoid setbacks in the academic performance of the students.

Investigating the Effect of Social Media on the Students’ Academic Performance

The objectives of the present study are to assess social media impact onthe academic performance of the student. Social media has developed sharedglobal fashion which has feast across virtually everywhere in the world.The sample was consisting of undergraduate students of the leadinguniversity in Lahore. A convenience sampling technique was employed.Self-administered data from 83 students were collected from the Likertscale. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the data on studentaddictiveness, exposure to social media, the influence of social media onacademic performance, age and gender. Results suggested that socialmedia addictiveness affects the performance of the students, whereas,age usage has an influence on the social media network. The researchersrecommend that social media is used for academic commitments. Thestudents can make balance amid academic activities and chit-chattingthereby monitoring their health at regular intervals.

Social Media and Students’ Academic Performance in Nigeria

The focus of this study is to find out effect of social media on students’ academic performance of students at the Federal College of Education, Kontagora in Niger State of Nigeria. By use of random sampling, a total sample of 100 students was selected. Questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. Result of the study indicates that effect of social media can be both positive and negative. The social media sites such as Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram were the most used that capture the attention of many students away from their study and thus have negative and positive effects on their academic grade points aggregate.

Social Media Use Among Library and Information Science Students: A Case Study

The purpose of this study is to identify the prevailing conditions of social media use among undergraduate students of Library and Information Science in a Nigerian University. Simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 180 full-time undergraduate students purposely. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze data collected through the administration of questionnaire. Research findings showed that a great number of students of Library and Information Science are addicted to social media for wrong academic purposes. The levels of addiction varied according to four Likert scale type. The highly addiction was among student using WhatApp (40.82%) and not addicted among students using BB chat (13.12%). Analyzing the implications of Social media usage on the university students in Pakistan: An Empirical Investigation

The usage of Social Media has become an integrating part of our modern civilization which is based on the applications and websites to enable the users for creating and sharing the information or content via social networking participation. This study is concerned to assess the impacts of the social media usage by the university students as they adopt the different applications during their study career in university, hostel and outside. For an empirical investigation survey questionnaires were used to collect data in which 215 students ensured their response as they use the social networking applications including Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and what sup. The findings revealed the impact of social media effect on the university students by means decreasing and influence their contribution in the development of learning, efficiency violation, bad socialization, addictiveness, impact psychologically, vitiate time management, ethical and health related issues. This quantitative research drew a random sample (N=215) of males (n=180) and females (n=35) who were administered a student perception questionnaire on how social media affects university students. Results indicate while most students use social media and spend several hours checking social media sites; there was a negative aspect to university students' use of social media. This research contains the cross-sectional study, random sampling, and follow the SPSS-18.0 to interpret the data. Moreover, this study is confined within a university and it requires following the longitudinal and reinterpretation of the research due to the human dynamic behavior and nature.

INFLUENCE OF FACEBOOK USAGE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF IBRAHIM BADAMASI BABANGIDA UNIVERSITY, LAPAI (IBBUL) STUDENTS

This research examines the influence of Facebook usage on the academic performance of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University students. There have been serious concerns as to the over use of social media by undergraduate students which to some scholars has accounted for students’ poor academic performance. It is worrisome that reading is fast becoming a forgetting exercise among youth (undergraduate students) as majority of them often devote most of their time surfing the internet. On the bases of that, this study sought among other things to find out the activities of IBB University students on Facebook,their frequency of Facebook useand possible influence Facebook usage have on their academic endeavor. The work reviewed relevant literatures in the areas of Facebook use and academic performance, student’s perception of Facebook as well as positive and negative impact of Facebook use among others and the study is anchored on the theory of Use and Gratification. The findings however revealed that IBB University students uses Facebook frequently, with their major activities being to chat, upload pictures, meeting new friends, etc. and do less of academic activities. The study also found that Facebook use is of negative outcome to IBBUL students as it distracts their academic focus. Nevertheless, the study recommend immediate regulation of social media use by Nigerian students, organization of seminars against student’s excessive and unproductive use of social media platforms like Facebook by the Nigeria Ministry of Education and various school managements and incorporation of social media as part of learning aid to pass relevant informations to students and lecturers among others.

Use of social media and academic performance of students: evidence from undergraduate students in University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka

This study attempts to examine the impact of use of social media on academic performance of students. Primary data was collected from sample of hundred and eighty students who were following degree of Bachelor of Business Administration programme in faculty of management studies and commerce, University of Jaffna from first year to final year. Use of social media is measured using different dimensions such as time duration, addictiveness, exposure and nature of usage, while overall Grade Point Average is used to measure academic performance of the students issuing structured questionnaires. Social media network is a phenomenon of web application which has a new science of media network based on web-based service that gives individuals the opportunity to create either a public or group profile within a bounded system. It is so easy to use and does not need skill and professionalism to use it, cheap cost, and the introduction of smart-phones leads to social media networks best to use in our daily lives. We can use Social media networks for different reasons in the community and the world. One of the main reasons is communication purpose between individuals aboard live at low cost is the primary advantage. In addition to this, it adds a list of others' profiles to those who share a connection made by others within the system. Therefore, this study was carried out to examine the usage and effect of social media on students' academic performance at Assosa University. This research adopted descriptive and explanatory research design. It also employed the use of a cross-sectional survey method using survey questionnaires that contained 20 items and focus group discussion. The sample of 382 students was selected from Assosa University using the Yemane sampling method. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive and chi-square(X2) inferential statistics via SPSS 21. Using the chi-square(X2) inferential statistics four variables are significant which include: exposure to social media, daily usage of the social media network, age, and health addiction while student relation and sex problems are not significant.

INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES ON INFORMATION SERVICE DELIVERY TO STUDENTS, 2021

This study investigates the influence of social networking sites on information service delivery to students of Asom Bur library of university of Mkar. Five objectives and five research question guided the study. The descriptive survey research was adopted for the study. A total of 958 registered users of Ason Bur learning resource center (library) of university of Mkar constituted the population of the study. A sample size of one hundred and sixty (160) students were randomly selected from the entire population of the study using proportionate random sampling technique. A self-developed questionnaire was used to obtain information. Data collected were analyzed using mean scored and standard deviation. Finding revealed that, high percentage (50%) of the students mainly use social networking sites for social activities, only 20% percentage of the population use social networking sites for education. Findings further revealed that to benefit the rich potentials of social networking sites, students should spend less time socializing on them and utilize them for more for school related activities and worthwhile events. It was also recommended that the university management through the library should encourage the students in the use of other social networking sites like Skype, LinkedIn, my space, google classroom and zoom meeting so that their knowledge will be widened, Students should include the use of google classroom to the list of social networking sites they explores so as to reap its benefits. Though students use social networking sites frequently (daily and weekly), care must be taken to avoid them from using them when lectures are on-going. This will help to curb the extent to which students are distracted during lecture periods. The university library through the library should encourage other methods of service delivered to student such e-books, posting photos, videos, voice over protocol and others. Also The University management through the library should ensure the provision of basic information needed by academic community, faster and effective information service delivery, independent and life-long learning and provision of information necessary to improve quality of teaching.
