This study investigates CPD provision in Saudi Arabia by critically examining mathematics teachers' views on their experiences and their views on the impact of provision from a teacher-as-learner perspective. A questionnaire was administered to 605 teachers representing three educational administrations in Saudi Arabia (Mecca, Taif, and Majmah). The data was analyzed from a socio-cultural learning perspective with the intention of teasing out the assumptions about knowledge, learning and context that underpinned provision. There was tentative evidence that knowledge was typically conceptualized as a transferable commodity that could be imparted to teachers in ways that was intended to influence their professional practices and development. Yet, from the perspective of the majority of teachers, it failed to have a large impact on their practice beyond the immediate. Most teachers' descriptions of how they spent their CPD were deemed to be passive and subservient rather than active participation in knowledge creation or offering leadership to others. It was concluded that teacher learning is best facilitated through long term, practice-focused, community of practice-based provision and should encompass all activity in which a teacher feels they have learnt irrespective of whether it took place as part of their daily work or at a provided CPD event.
Background Teachers’ pedagogical beliefs have effects on their teaching practices. This study aimed to assess the impact of continuous professional development training on mathematics and science teachers’ pedagogical beliefs in secondary schools after training they received. Methods A one-group pre-posttest quasi-experimental design was adopted to achieve the intended objectives. The sample of 691 teachers was purposively selected in eight Rwandan districts. Data were collected using a valid and reliable Beliefs about Reformed Science Teaching and Learning (BARSTL) questionnaire. The instrument’s internal consistency reliability was calculated, and a Cronbach alpha of α = .856 was obtained. Teachers were assessed before and after training on their pedagogical beliefs. The training was done for eight months. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. Results The item-by-item analysis showed positive shifts on some items in terms of both gender and school groups. The results...

This study aims to measure the effectiveness of training program that is conducted by PPPPTK Mathematics, which is viewed from teachers’ Continuous Professional Development performance and after-training implementation of continuous professional development (CPD). The results of this research are as follows: (1) the effective level of the training programs before and after the programs are improved as shown by the improvement of mean score before the training (50.530) and after training (79.920); (2) the paired sample t-test shows that there is a significant difference in teachers’ Continuous Professional Development performance before and after the training programs; (3) the result of the structural model testing indicates that the model for program evaluation is fit (chi-square result is 4.998 which is relatively small, RMSEA less than 0.08 (0.063), CFI more than 0.9 (0.995), GFI more than 0.9 (0.940), AGFI more than 0.9 (0.988), and probability 0.172 which shows that there is no ...

This study assessed the effectiveness of a professional development program for junior high school mathematics teachers in the Philippines and analyzed their achievement test results in Mathematics. The study aimed to identify the factors affecting the quality of mathematics instruction and propose solutions to these challenges. The study found that while most teachers were consistent in their lesson planning and content delivery, they need to improve their questioning techniques, differentiated techniques, and strategies to develop higher-order thinking skills. The study suggests that teachers need to enhance their teaching practices to achieve the K to 12 Curriculum goals, prepare students for better work opportunities, and contribute to the nation's economy. Professional development programs can provide opportunities for mathematics teachers to increase their knowledge and confidence in the subject. By improving their teaching practices, teachers can help enhance the quality ...
A perspective on the literature: CPD for teachers of mathematics Marie Joubert
The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) was set up to provide effective strategic leadership for mathematics-specific continuing professional development (CPD) with the overall aims of:• raising the professional status of all those engaged in the teaching of mathematics;• improving institutional performance, including raising standards, by supporting targeted workforce development in order that the mathematical potential of learners be fully realised.
Professional development for teachers of mathematics: opportunities and change

The RECME research was set up to develop understanding of 'effective'Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers of mathematics by looking at a large number of initiatives adopting a variety of models, taking a non-interventionist, nonparticipatory approach. In addition to building a 'big picture', it also aims to develop an in-depth understanding of the individual initiatives by looking at the structure and organisation and at the responses of individual teachers to their CPD.
