The Perception of Romanian Tourists on the Attractiveness of the Industrial Heritage. Case Study: Municipality of Cluj-Napoca

2022

The radical changes generated by the process of industrial restructuring and accelerated urban development have brought to the center of attention the industrial heritage as a valuable cultural resource, but at the same time vulnerable. Regeneration projects focused on the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage elements take many forms, from economic, residential to cultural conversions, the latter being correlated with the use of industrial buildings as tourist attractions. The purpose of this study is to identify the interest of Romanian tourists to practice industrial tourism, based on assessing the degree of knowledge and their desire to visit industrial monuments. For this purpose, an online questionnaire was applied, the results of which were statistically interpreted using the Covariance Analysis (ANACOVA). The main results of the study reflect the fact that there is a low share of Romanian tourists who know the significance of the concept of industrial heritage and who consider it attractive. Selecting 5 representative industrial buildings for the Municipality of Cluj-Napoca selected as a case study, only a third of the respondents stated that they know them. However, there is a relatively high interest of respondents to visit industrial monuments, mentioning as main motivations: the age of the buildings, the specific architecture, and curiosity or even form of reuse of industrial monuments. Almost half of the respondents stated that they would introduce industrial buildings in their travel itineraries if they were better promoted. The main conclusion of the study is that industrial tourism is not sufficiently promoted at national level.

Empirical Investigation of the Motivation and Perception of Tourists Visiting the Apuseni Nature Park (Romania) and the Relationship of Tourism and Natural Resources

Sustainability

As part of an international project, national parks and nature parks established in karst regions are examined, with a primary focus on how local residents, visitors and influential figures (i.e., park managers, mayors) perceive the advantages and disadvantages of a specific park. The study area in this paper is the Apuseni Nature Park (Romania). The main natural resources of this park are: the karst (morphology and hydrology), the forests and the landscape. In order to explore the perception and motivation of tourists visiting the park, a field survey using a convenience sampling strategy was conducted in 2019 and 2021 at eleven sites in the park. The results show that among the motivations, the “search for relaxation” option is the most frequently selected (43%), but “interest in caves” (34%) and “interest in karst terrains” (29%) were also relatively popular. In terms of public support for potential developments, one positive result of the questionnaire is that developments invol...

Favoring and Disfavoring Factors for Cultural Tourism Exploiting of Historical Monuments in Transylvania, Romania

Proceedings 2019, 2019

Each historical province of Romania has a significant number of monuments, the cultural value of which can be used to create opportunities for tourism development of some geographical areas or localities. The study seeks to identify these monuments, capable of meeting the requirements imposed by the cultural-tourist activity through: accessibility, originality, seniority, maintenance or level of rehabilitation and promotion. The geographically analyzed area is the historical and geographical province of Transylvania, Romania. It is a province with a great historical load, and the presence of monuments has a rather high density. The steps taken to carry out this study followed, first of all, the crossing of the List of Cultural Monuments issued by the Ministry of Culture of Romania. The second stage is the individual analysis on the field of each monument mentioned in the list, as well as the identification of the appropriate level of cultural and tourist valorization, according to the mentioned criteria. The results of the study show, first of all, a difference between the large number of existing cultural monuments and the value of which is undoubtedly quite high by what they represent historically, and the smaller number of monuments that can be valorized from the cultural and tourism point of view. The requirements of the tourists and, generally, of the tourist activity, do not allow the entry and usage of the monuments that have very low levels of accessibility, originality or rehabilitation within touristic circuits or tourist offerings.

Mountain Tourism in the Perception of Romanian Tourists: A Case Study of the Rodna Mountains National Park

Information

As a country, Romania tries to communicate abroad its authenticity, intact nature and unique cultural heritage. Thematic Tourist Programme, Essential Element of the Romanian Tourism Promotion

Economics and Applied Informatics, 2006

Tourism is the brilliant and efficient combination of the natural elements existing in a geographical space, of the general components of human existence (language, culture, traditions, folklore, hospitality), of the human factor and of the infrastructure. If one of these elements is inefficient, then their combination will be an unfortunate one. What Romanian tourism needs is the infrastructure and efficiency in the exploitation of its rich natural elements. If to all these we add an unhealthy mentality of tourism performers, then we may say we sketched the image of the Romanian tourism. A special natural foundation is an absolutely wonderful thing, but without the rest of the components, without attractive tourist programmes to highlight those natural beauties, and without material basis at European standards, tourism will remain one of the national economy fields insufficiently exploited.

Interest in Tourist Cards and Cultural Routes in the Case of a Romanian Destination

2016

Although tourist cards and cultural routes have been interesting innovations when they were launched on the international tourism mar-ket, they are rarely implemented in Romanian tourism destinations, especially in an integrat-ed manner. This paper presents a theoretical model regarding the integration of tourist cards in cultural routes, based on the assumption that tourists who are interested in both products have similar demographic and travel characteristics. The research results outline only the infl uence of tourists ’ travel characteristics on their interest to buy cultural routes and tourist cards. Leisure travelers should be the main targeted segment, as their probability to buy such products is higher than in the case of business or VFR (visit friends and relatives) tourists. These results can assist the Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) regarding the choice of marketing strat-egies aimed at integrating cultural routes in a tourist card.

Protecting National and Cultural Heritage While Promoting Cultural Tourism in Romania – Unsolvable Dilemma or Missed Opportunity?

Cactus, 2018

The current paper tackles the thorny issue of cultural tourism in Romania, trying to ascertain whether there is an actual chance of promoting it successfully in our country, without further damage to an already endangered national cultural patrimony. The question is whether we were facing a dilemma with little chances of being solved to our advantage – namely, if the promotion of cultural tourism would pose a threat or present an opportunity to a domain in which, unfortunately, very little has been done in recent years. The goal of the paper is twofold – it is meant, on the one hand, as a strong alarm signal, a wake-up call as to the necessity of a coherent, well-funded strategy regarding the promotion of cultural tourism in Romania, and on the other hand as a cautionary tale – one that could envisage what might happen if such a strategy were incorrectly devised and applied. Some hints in that direction are unfortunately already at hand, amply visible when considering the current si...

Tourist motivations in a heritage destination in Spain

European Journal of Tourism, Hospitality and Recreation, 2016

The inscription of an area as World Heritage Site (WHS) is of utmost significance to preserve the historical and artistic heritage and at the same time, to encourage visits to the site. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the study of the relationship between WHS and tourism by presenting the results of a research conducted in the city of Córdoba (Spain) which analyses the socio-demographic profile and motivations of tourists who visit this City, differentiating between domestic and foreign tourists. The main results of the research show the important educational level of respondent tourists, the significant number of countries of origin, the high motivation to learn about the heritage roots of the city, the importance of gastronomy as a part of its cultural identity and the high satisfaction of tourists. As a point of improvement, the results show the low level of overnight stays in the city.
