The study sample consisted of 250 parents distributed as follows: (117) parents of normal children and (133) parents of disabled ones. As for the study tool, Taylor scale of anxiety was used to measure the level of crude anxiety. The results showed that there was no anxiety level among the parents of normal children as the arithmetic average of the anxiety level of the normal children's parents was (11.31). On the other hand, there was (average anxiety) level among the parents of disabled children as the arithmetic average of the anxiety level of the disabled children's parents was (22.60). The study results showed significant statistical differences at formula (α=0.05) of Taylor scale of anxiety level in relation to the parents' variety of work and gender. Accordingly, the study recommended several recommendations including the design of counselling programs based on the strategy that copes with pressures and most importantly the parents' anxiety of disabled children, which is the key to all behavioral and emotional disorders.

Behavioral Problems Among Kindergarten Children in Jordan From the Mothers' Point Of View

Dirāsāt, 2022

The study aims to reveal the correlation between patterns of family nurturing and behavioral problems among kindergarten children from the point of view of their mothers. The sample consisted of (70) mothers, who were chosen by the available random method. The researchers used two tools: behavioral problems scale, which included the two dimensions (aggression and hyperactivity), and the family nurturing scale, which included two dimensions (authoritarian and democratic). The results indicated that there is an inverse and strong correlation between the scores of the scale of the behavioral problem and the sub-degree of the (tolerant style) scale. Moreover, the study indicated that there is a direct and strong correlation between the scores on the scale of the behavioral problem and the sub-degree of the (authoritarian style) scale, and this indicates that the higher the score on the authoritarian style scale, the higher the level of behavioral problems. It was also found that there are statistically significant differences related to the gender on the scale of behavioral problems as a whole in favor of males at a level. The results also showed that there were differences in the tolerant style of nurturing in favor of females and there were differences in the authoritarian style of nurturing in favor of males and it was found that there were differences in the total degree of behavioral problems attributed to the style of family nurturing in favor of the authoritarian style. Keywords: patterns of family nurturing, behavioral problems, children in the kindergarten stage.

Mothers’ Perceptions on Familial Correlates of Overweight and Obesity Related Behaviors in Adolescents

Iranian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2010

Introduction: There is convincing evidence that family environment plays an important role in influencing the obesity related-behaviors in adolescents. Considering the necessity of understanding the familial correlates of obesity in adolescents, and the lack of related studies in Iran, this study aimed to explore mothers' perceptions and experiences regarding these associated factors of overweight and obesity related behaviors in adolescents. Materials and Methods: A grounded theory approach was used for analyzing the participants' experiences, and their perceptions. To collect data, 6 semi-structured focus group discussions were conducted with 25 mothers who had at least one overweight or obese child. Based on open sampling, with the aim of maximal variation of the participants' experiences, two demographically diverse areas from the north and south of Tehran were selected and then followed with theoretical sampling. All the focus group discussions were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data collection and analysis were done simultaneously using the Strauss and Corbin analysis method. Results: Five main familial correlates of overweight and obesity in adolescents emerged from data: 1) Parents with inadequate knowledge, 2) Parents' modeling of unhealthy behaviors, 3) Dissimilarity of members, 4) Maternal employment and 5) Children's studies being the top priority for parents. Conclusion: Findings demonstrate familial correlates of overweight and obesity in adolescents as perceived by mothers, correlates that must be addressed by effective interventions for tackling overweight and obesity in adolescents
