Tourism Post COVID-19: What’s New in Indonesian Tourism Demand Trends?

Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this research is to determine Indonesian tourism demand trends and gather understanding into how to restore tourism following the Covid-19 pandemic. Methodology: This study employs a quantitative approach and was conducted in Indonesia in March-April 2020. Data was collected using a survey method via social media broadcast messages, with 100 respondents. Descriptive statistics were utilized in the data analysis technique. Main Findings: According to the findings of this study, the decrease in the number of domestic tourists is less than that of foreign tourists. Natural and culinary tourism destinations in the country are the most popular, particularly for short trips. This study also discovered that after the Covid-19 pandemic, tourists have positive travel intentions. Implication/Applications: This study's theoretical implication is that catastrophic diseases like Covid-19 have a significant impact on tourist visits and demand. The practical implication of this research is that destination managers, governments, and business stakeholders could utilize this information to develop a tourism development strategy following the Covid-19 pandemic. The Originality of the Study: The limitation of this research is the data collection method which is dominated by surveys. The Covid-19 pandemi has an extensive impact on the country's economy, including in the tourism sector, one of the most significant contributors to the country's foreign exchange. This study aims to provide an overview of the impact of Covid-19 on the Indonesian tourism sector and strategies made by the Government to overcome the problems and impacts of Covid-19 on Indonesian tourism. This study uses descriptive explorative qualitative methods and data collection and analysis through literature studies. Based on the analysis, it is found that the Covid-19 pandemic has indeed had a significant impact on the tourism sector and Indonesia's creative economy. One of the significance obtained is that there is an extreme decrease in Indonesia's income due to the circulation of money that does not work. However, the Government has designed policies and strategies to overcome these problems, preparing to complete the recovery of Indonesian tourism after Covid-19.

The tourism is one of the strategic sectors and has an important role as a source of foreign exchange and encourages national economic growth. Nations including Indonesia are losing its competitiveness due to COVID19 pandemic. Due to various restriction and preventive virus spreading actions, the number of international travellers has reached the lowest level in history. The global COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world to a standstill, and tourism has been the hardest hit from all major economic sectors. The United Nation World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates that by 2020 the arrival of international tourists around the world could decrease drastically in all countries. The socio-economic impact is part of the benchmark for measuring the success of regional development in various sectors, especially tourism in Indonesia. During the Covid 19 pandemic, the tourism sector in Bintan Regency has decreased so that it has an impact on the life and welfare of the community. The purpose of this study is to analyze the socio-economic impacts of the tourism sector in the Bintan Regency before COVID 19 and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach and a literature approach which will later be analyzed in depth. Tourism plays a significant role in the economic development of Indonesia. Aside from being a source of revenue, tourism creates employment opportunities and promotes the hospitality industry. However, the emergence of COVID-19 has adversely implicated on tourism in Indonesia, as international travel restrictions have been imposed by many countries. This paper dialectically analysed the impact of COVID-19 on the Indonesian tourism industry. It was observed that labour and the earnings in the tourism were severely affected by COVID-19. Indonesia's tourism potential can be used as the main driver of the Indonesian economy. This study aims to analyze the performance of the Indonesian tourism sector and analyze the factors that influence the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative analysis method and static panel model analysis. The type of data used in this study is secondary data, including annual time series data for five years, from 2010 to 2014. It also includes cross-section data from nine countries that are the main visitors to the Indonesian tourism sector, namely Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, UK, and the USA. The development and growth of the performance of the Indonesian tourism sector increased in the period 2010 to 2014. The number of foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia is influenced by the variables of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of the country of origin, economic distance, relative prices, and security dummy which have a significant effect on the number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia, while the exchange rate and dummy travel warning variables have no significant effect. Therefore, the government needs to maintain the stability of the exchange rate and inflation rate as well as the coordination of related parties and institutions in maintaining political, economic, social stability and increasing the promotion of Indonesian tourism to foreign countries.
