An Analysis of Politeness Strategies Used by Teacher and Students in English Class at SMPN 1 Mojo Kediri

Politeness is a vital component in communication as it assists in preventing misunderstandings, reducing conflict, and building harmony between interlocutors, such as communication between the educator and learners in the educational setting. This descriptive qualitative study attempts to explore the types and preferred politeness techniques employed by both educators and learners in an English class. An English teacher and 40 students of class 7 G SMPN 1 Mojo Kediri were the participants of this research. The research's primary instrument was an observation by video recording and documentation, which was afterward examined by the researchers through data reduction, display of data, conclusion drawing, and triangular validation. Teachers’ Linguistic Politeness in Classroom Interaction: A Pragmatic Analysis

This study aimed to uncover the different structures of linguistic politeness used in the utterances of the teachers in classroom interaction. More specifically, the analysis made use of House and Kasper’s (1981) Politeness Linguistic Expressions, Brown and Levinson’s (1987) Politeness Strategies, and Leech’s (1983) Politeness Maxims. Using observation and interview, several structures of linguistic politeness were unearthed. Firstly, the politeness linguistic expressions involved politeness markers, consultative devices, downtoners, committers, forewarning, hesitators, and agent avoider. Secondly, the politeness strategies involved positive politeness, negative politeness, off-record strategy, and bald-on record strategy. This research was conducted to describe language politeness that occurs when linguistic/verbal interaction occurs with 52 students of the Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) study program at Bosowa University. This research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The data collection techniques used in this study were observation and interview methods. The observation method is applied in the form of the SLC technique, while the interview method uses the recording technique. The results of this study indicate the use of language politeness in the teaching and learning process in the Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) study program batch 2021/2022 at Bosowa University; politeness is due to: familiarity factors, respect factors, age factors, and dominating factors.

An Analysis of Politeness in Teacher's Utterances in an English Classroom

The objectives of this research were three-fold: to explore the types of politeness uttered by the teacher, to analyze the most predominant type of politeness uttered, and to explore the strategies of politeness uttered by the teacher in an English classroom. This research employed a descriptive qualitative analysis. The subject of this research was an English teacher of MAN 1 Kolaka. This research was conducted with two cohorts; they were class XII.IA-2 and class XII.IA-4. The data were collected from three observations and recordings of teacher’s utterances. As many as 117 politeness utterances were identified, encompassing 55 positive politeness utterances, 45 negative politeness utterances, 6 bald on record utterances and 1 off record utterance. The Politeness Strategies in Lecturers’ Illocutions in Teaching English for Non-English Department Students

This research discusses politeness strategies in illocutions uttered by the lecturers. The reason is that the researcher wants to find out how to teach well by using politeness strategies in order to save the hearer's face or respect another person's self-image when the conversation is going. The objective of this research is to find out the used of politeness strategies in lecturers' illocution in teaching English at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Lambung Mangkurat University. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research were three lecturers of English department in teaching English for non-English department students. The instrument used was a human instrument supported by observation sheet, recorder, and interview sheet. Findings of the research show that the researcher found the illocution consistently used in pre-activity was directive with politeness strategies: notice to the hearer, include both speaker and hearer inactivity and assume or assert reciprocity. In while-activity, the researcher found the illocution consistently used was representative with politeness strategies: notice attends to the hearer, seek agreement, and give gifts to the hearer. In post-activity, the researcher found the illocution consistently used was expressive with politeness strategies: notice attends to the hearer and gives gifts to the hearer. It means that politeness strategies in illocutions can be found in the lecturers' utterance in every activity of the teaching and learning process.

An Analysis of Politeness Strategies Used by Teacher and Students of X Ibb in Sman 1 Sukasada During English Classroom Interaction

This study aims to (1) analyzing the types of politeness strategies used by teachers and students of Class X in Ilmu Budaya dan Bahasa (IBB) in Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 1 Sukasada during English classroom interaction; (2) analyzing the factors that influence the choice of politeness strategies. This study was designed as a qualitative descriptive study. The data that has been obtained was analyzed based on the theory of politeness Brown and Levinson's strategy. The results of this study indicated that (1) there were three types of Brown and Levinson politeness strategies used by teachers and students namely bald on record, positive politeness, and negative politeness; (2) as for the factors that influencing the choice of politeness strategies are payoffs: as a prior consideration, circumstances: social variables, and integration of the assessment of payoffs and the weight of the risk of choosing politeness strategies.

Lecturers’ Politeness Strategies and Students’ Compliance in English for Foreign Language (Efl) Class

The aim of this study is to find out the politeness strategies used by the teachers and students, and how the politeness affects to the student’s compliance. The focus is on directive and expressive speech acts in English for Foreign Language (EFL) Class. The subjects of this study were three lecturers and the students of three English classes.
