ABSTRACT Most of the poor are led to crime because of their relative deprivation and acute sense of want (Townsend, 1970). This observation seems to tally largely with the existing reality in Nigeria today where a person's worth in life and his contribution to society is solely measured by his wealth. This study examined the Consequences of Poverty and Youth Criminal Behavior in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria. Te major objective of this study is to examine the Consequences of Poverty and Youth Criminal Behavior in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria. From the findings of the study, parents play down their parental responsibilities by dehumanizing the youths and exposing them to hazards and risks of criminal behaviours, it shows that poverty is the root cause of youth criminal behavior in the study area, since the household’s financial standard of their parents is low. The study adopted the Anomie and Social Control Theories. The study therefore, recommends that Government should look at the factors that led to the vicious cycle of causes of poverty and criminal behaviors of youths in the study area, parents should not neglect their responsibilities of taking good care of their children. Keywords: Youth, Criminal Behavior, Poverty
his study aims at assessing the impact of poverty on criminal behaviours among youths in Cross River State. Research questions were formulated to guide and give direction to the study. Relevant and related literatures were reviewed, using the survey design, 150 respondents made up of adult men and women and youths were selected to participate in the study. The major instrument for data collection was questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlative Coefficient and presented in simple % tables. The result revealed that poverty significantly influences criminal tendencies among youths. Most youths with low socio-economic background are easily lured into criminal activities. It was recommended that the government, nongovernmental agencies and parastatals and the general public must embark on youth empowerment programs that would alleviate poverty at least to the barest minimum while enhancing their young minds and directing them towards better and rewarding activities.

Rethinking the Role of Family in Combating Juvenile Delinquency in Nigeria
American Journal of Arts and Educational Administration Research
Many families have failed in performing their major role of protection, provision for their members, socializing their members and ensuring they conform to the socially acceptable patterns of behaviour in society, thereby increasing the rate of adolescent delinquencies in society. The literature emphasizes that the home front is the root cause of juvenile delinquency. In this context, this paper examines the role of the family in adolescent antisocial behaviour and maintains that the family sustains the corrective ability to combat juvenile delinquency. The paper found that divorce, improper use of the internet by juveniles, dysfunctionality in the home, single parenthood, substance abuse, weak parenting, poverty, and constructed realities by the media, amongst others, were examined as the cause of these behaviours. The paper explains the challenges many homes face in raising lawabiding citizens and the aftermath effect of these challenges. However, this could be tackled by developing a child's security, values and skills. Consequentially, the paper recommends families placing more emphasis on meeting the psychological need of the adolescent, family bonding, and cohesion as well as adequate provision for every child by parents and guardians to curb this menace.

The study examined the relationship between socioeconomic status of youth and involvement in criminal activities in Calabar Metropolis of Cross River State, Nigeria. Two null hypotheses were formulated based on the identified independent variables of poverty and unemployment. Using the survey research design, data were collected from 100 randomly selected respondents and statistically analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis with a 0.05 alpha significant. Result showed a significant relationship between poverty and youth involvement in criminal activities on one hand and between unemployment and youth involvement in criminal activities on the other. We recommend among other things, that parent(s) should support their children to choose vocational skills training as it will help to reduce poverty and increase employability. Also, poverty alleviation programmes should be pro poor and getting to the right people which the programme(s) is design for, both in the rural and urban areas rather than politicians using it to enrich themselves and compensate their supporters and patronage.

Juvenile crimes include: rape, theft, kleptomania, burglary, disobedience, murder, absenteeism, vandalism, robbery, etc. Thus, this study aims to explore the effects of family structure on juvenile delinquency in Rivers State. The objective of this study aims at finding out the influence of single-parent families and two-parent families on juvenile, and the ways the society can adopt to mitigate the challenges of juvenile delinquency in Rivers State. The study adopted the Broken Home Theory which was developed by Wilkinson Kelly (1969). And the method of data collection was secondary while the content analysis was used for analysis. The study established that there is strong link between family structure and juvenile delinquency; and children in single-parent of broken homes commit more crime than children from homes that are conflict free in Rivers State. The study also revealed that some factors that lead to single-parent are beyond the control of parents, therefore, there is the need for the communities, schools, churches and communities to get involve in cushioning the challenge of juvenile delinquency in the society. This assistance could be in the form of providing employment opportunities for the parents, adequate education and counseling services for members of the society.

An Examination of General Theory of Crime in Nigeria
A substantial amount of empirical research on the causes and correlates of deviant and delinquent behavior among Western youths has been amassed over the last 50 years. Significantly less is known, however, about whether or not Western-based theories of causation apply in non-Western societies. This article addresses the existing gap in empirical research on the causes and correlates of deviant and delinquent behavior among African teens. It examined the causes and correlates of deviance among Nigerian youth. Summarizing some preliminary findings from a self-report survey completed by 265 youths enrolled in a large university in Kano, Nigeria, the article report descriptive statistics of the sample, the types and frequencies of misbehavior reported, and bivariate relationships between some predictors and low self-control. The findings lead to the conclusion that a multivariate analysis may provide a unique statistical test of General Theory, which will aid in understanding patterns of deviance in Nigeria, as well as adding to the criminological literature. As part of the preliminary conclusions, though the means reported summarize bivariate relationships and were not subjected to tests of statistical significance, they however provide some preliminary indications that deviance varies considerably even in a completely different cultural context. The variations depend on variables that have been identified as important predictors of crime and delinquency in Western research. Hence, these findings lead to the conclusion that a more complete multivariate analysis of the data can provide a statistical test of low self-control as a predictor of deviance among Nigerian youths, and hence make a significant contribution to the literature on General Theory of Crime.
