Standardization of Aneilema lanceolatum as a potential medicinal plant
Journal of Current Biomedical Research
Aneilema lanceolatum is a weed plant commonly found in farm lands and bushes around tropical African countries. The plant is utilized as livestock feeds and in traditional medicine in northern Nigeria for the treatment and management of pains, infectious diseases and as sexual stimulant. The present study was aimed at establishing microscopic, physicochemical and phytochemical constituents of the plant. The aerial parts of the plant was collected in May, 2021 from Kubanni, Sabon-gari local government area of Kaduna state and were identified and authenticated at the Herbarium unit of the Department of Botany, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria-Nigeria and a voucher number ABU0533 was assigned. The physicochemical parameters, microscopic evaluation and qualitative and quantitative screening of the plant were carried out using standard procedures. The stomatal index of the upper epidermis (18.60±1.91) is lower than the lower epidermis (22.10±2.03) with palisade ratio of 10.07±0.90. The mic...

The antioxidant, anticholinesterase, anti-tyrosinase, anti-α-glucosidase, cytotoxic, antifungal and antibacterial activities of Ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and n-butanol (n-BuOH) extracts and three compounds isolated from Anvillea radiata (Asteracea); two epimer germacranolides 9α-hydroxyparthenolide(1), 9β-hydroxyparthenolide(2) and a phenolic acid; 3,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3), were evaluated. The antioxidant activity was assessed using two methods (DPPH and ABTS). In the DPPH and ABTS methods, EtOAc extract exhibited the strongest radical scavenging activity with an IC 50 value of 0.0026 mg/mL and 0.0011 mg/mL, respectively. This extract and the two germacranolides (1) and (2) exhibited considerable anticholinesterase and anti-tyrosinase activities, 9α-hydroxyparthenolide(1) exhibited the highest effect with values of IC 50 = 0.025 mg/mL and % of inhibition = 79.55%, respectively. Compound 3 displayed the highest αglucosidase inhibitory activity with IC 50 = 0.09 mg/mL. The antibacterial effect of the isolated compounds and the studied extracts was rated limited. The two compounds 1 and 2 exhibited a high cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 cancer cell lines with growth inhibition of 98.12% and 78.50%, respectively at 50 μM but showed a moderate cytotoxic effect towards OVCAR-3 cell lines. These results suggest that A.radiata has several biological activities and could provide a potential natural source of bioactive compounds and be beneficial to the human health and as source of natural antioxidants in food industry.
Toxicity Test on Anogeissus leiocarpus Plant with Potential for use as Tea Substitute
International Journal Of Scientific Research And Education, 2016
Powdered leaves of Anogeissus leiocarpus were extracted with ethanol and fractionated with Pet-ether, Nhexane, Ethyl acetate, Chloroform, and Ethanol using partition technique. The extracts and fractions were tested for toxicity on brine shrimp larvae and phytochemically screened for the presence of secondary metabolites. Brine shrimp test result showed that the fraction of ethyl acetate was found to be more toxic with LC 50 of 0.0017mg/ml. The fraction obtained from chloroform was found to be moderately toxic with LC 50 of 18.58 mg/ml to brine shrimps. Concentrations of 10, 100, 1000 in mg/ml of extracts were administered. The lethal concentrations (LC 50) at lower concentrations (10mg/ml) were less toxic and are highly toxic at higher concentrations. The Phytochemical screening of the fractions revealed the presence of Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Steroids, Reducing sugars, and Tannins. Thus it is appropriate to use the plant as a tea substitute.
Phytochemical Screening and HPTLC Fingerprinting of Anogeissus Acuminata Extracts
International Journal of Research in Ayurveda & Pharmacy, 2016
Plant and plant based products are the basis of many of the modern pharmaceuticals we use today for various ailments. Astavarga group have a long history of use in traditional system of indigenous medicine. In present study, the powdered plant material was extracted using different solvents. Phytochemical screening and HPTLC fingerprinting analysis were carried out by using CAMAG LINOMAT 5 instrument. The result revealed that ethanol and chloroform extract of Roscea procera (Kakoli) and, ethyl acetate and chloroform extract of Lilium polyphyllum (Kshirkakoli) showed appreciable amount of secondary metabolites as compared to another solvent system. The HPTLC fingerprinting analysis was carried out for alkaloid, flavonoids and glycoside group of Kakoli extracts and for saponin and steroid groups of Kshirkakoli. The result scientifically validates the use of both plants in traditional medicine and it can be used to treat various disorders. Further studies are going on these plants in order to isolate, identify, characterize and elucidate the structure of the bioactive compounds.
The present study analysed the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the major bioactive constituents of methanol leaf extract of Anogeissus leiocarpus. Also investigated were the effects of leaf extract of Anogeissus leiocarpus on some hematological parameters of gentamicin induced rats. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of the plant leaves showed the presence of Alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, anthraquinones, terpenoids, glycosides, steroids and phenols. The quantitative phytochemical screening revealed that the plant leaves contained phenols (8.25+0.076 mg/g), tannins (14.00+1.154 mg/g), saponins (7.00+1.154 mg/g), terpenoids (0.40+0.115 mg/g) and flavonoids (2.40+0.115 mg/g). The significance of Anogeissus leiocarpus in ethnomedicine may be attributed to the presence of the phytochemical constituents in the plant. Our findings on hematological indices revealed that, red blood cell count, white blood cell count, platelet count, hematocrit, lymphocyte, mean corpuscular hemologbin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin values have increased significantly (p < 0.05) when treated with the plant extract. The results suggest that Anogeissus leiocarpus leaf extract is safe perherps because of the presence of bioactive chemical compounds for curing various ailments are found in the leaves of Anogeissus leiocarpus and it can render protection against injury.
