A survey of socially interactive robots

This paper reviews “socially interactive robots”: robots for which social human–robot interaction is important. We begin by discussing the context for socially interactive robots, emphasizing the relationship to other research fields and the different forms of “social robots”. We then present a taxonomy of design methods and system components used to build socially interactive robots. Finally, we describe the impact of these robots on humans and discuss open issues. A design-centred framework for social human-robot interaction

Abstract Robots currently integrate into our everyday lives, but little is known about how they can act socially. In this paper, we propose a definition of social robots and describe a framework that classifies properties of social robots. The properties consist of form, modality, social norms, autonomy, and interactivity. Finally, we provide broad guidelines for the design of social robots.

Alternative model-building for the study of socially interactive robots

In this discussion paper, we consider the potential merits of applying an alternative approach to model building (Empirical Modelling, also known as EM) in studying social aspects of human-robot interaction (HRI). The first section of the paper considers issues in modelling for HRI. The second introduces EM principles, outlining their potential application to modelling for HRI and its implications. The final section examines the prospects for applying EM to HRI from a practical perspective with reference to a simple case study and to existing models.

Evaluating social & ubiquitous human-robot interaction

While many robotic initiatives now share the thesis that robots are a compelling instance of those artefacts which comprise and deliver smart and ubiquitous environments, reconciling the social interface aspect with pervasiveness and ubiquity still remains a largely unexplored area of research. We argue that specific studies must be carried out to explore possible inconsistencies between the keystones of social human-robot interaction and the new features exhibited by ubiquitous robots.

Social robot architecture: A framework for explicit social interaction

Abstract This paper details the Social Robot Architecture, a framework for explicit human-robot and robot-robot social interaction. The core mechanisms for realizing a robust robot control architecture involving a synthesis of reactive, deliberative, and social reasoning mechanisms are presented and discussed. In addition, the Virtual Robotic Workbench is briefly described which demonstrates the coherent integration of both physical and virtual social robots in the human social space.
