Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Knowledge and Sexual Behavior of Adolescents

Objective: to evaluate the sexual knowledge and behavior of adolescents about Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Method: a descriptive, observational and quantitative study with a convenience sample of 532 adolescents aged between 10 and 19 years old. An individual questionnaire on sexually transmitted diseases was applied. The STATA 11.1 program was used for data analysis. Results: 89.2% of the teenage girls and 90.3% of the teenage boys were able to properly define the concept of a STD. Condom use is the most efficient method for STD prevention for 98.5% of the girls and 98.9% of the boys. However, 37.1% of the girls and 30.5% of the boys mentioned the use of contraceptives as a preventive method for sexually transmitted diseases. Conclusion: it is important to carry out educational actions together with schools on topics such as sexuality and reproductive health.

Awareness, knowledge and behavior of highschool students con­cerning sexually transmitted infections

Introduction. This paper presents the results of a research con?ducted among senior high school students in northern Kosovo and Metohija on their knowledge about sexually transmitted infections, emphasizing their awareness and sources of information, as well as their sexual behavior and use of contraceptives. Material and Methods. The survey of senior high school students was done using a previously prepared anonymous questionnaire which was followed by statistical processing of fully completed questionnaires. Results. The research included students aged 17 to 19; 63% were females and 37% males; 35.8% were sexually active. The correct definition of sexually transmitted infections was identified by 49%. Adolescence is a period of great physical, mental and emotional turmoil within teenagers. The objective of the study was to assess the knowledge of, attitude to and behaviour towards STI and AIDS among adolescence. Four randomly selected higher secondary school from students of class XI and XII were included after taking their verbal consent. A pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire was given to all the participants of the school. In order to get correct answers, specific questions were explained to the students with the help of their class teachers. The results were encouraging with the majority (94.16%) have heard about STIs and HIV/AIDS. Teachers (100%), Newspaper/magazine (90%) and Television (78.33%) were the main informational source about disease. The pivotal issue in today's world talks about HIV/AIDS transmission, it is also understood by virtue that almost every one has the knowledge of the disease and are aware how it is transmitted to others. Despite such understanding, the numbers of infected people are increasing everyday in all part of the world. The drastic scenario of developing country like ours, which is accustomed by religious belief and values still are lacking the significant data of the infectious people by HIV/AIDS. To reveal the exact data of infectious people, many social organization have come together to contribute their valuable suggestion.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a serious health problem for adolescents, occurring in an estimated one-quarter of sexually active teen-agers. Many of the health problems--including STDs--result from specific risk-taking behaviors. Determinants of STD risks among adolescents include behavioral, psychological, social, biological, institutional factors. Education is an important component in STD control in adolescents. The goal of education is to increase adolescent self-efficiency in practicing STD prevention and risk-reduction. A comprehensive approach including quality, theory-based education, accessible and effective health clinics, and improved social and economic conditions has the most promise of controlling STDs in adolescents.

Knowledge and Attitude of Senior High School Students in Jatinangor towards Sexually Transmitted Infections in 2013

Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are major health problem. Until today, the prevalence of STIs is still high and the incidence is increasing. Almost half of STIs new cases occur in adolescents and young adults. It is assumed that there is a positive correlation of knowledge about STIs with attitude and practices; therefore, giving proper information of STIs to adolescents could influence their safe sexual practices, and further, it can prevent STIs to occur. The objective of this study is to discover knowledge and attitude of senior high school students in Jatinangor towards STIs. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in Sekolah Menengah Atas Persatuan Guru Republik Indonesia (SMA PGRI) Jatinangor and Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri (SMAN) Jatinangor from May to September 2013. Questionnaires were completed by 278 respondents selected by stratified cluster random sampling. Results: More than half respondents had poor knowledge about STIs (56.5%) while 53.2% of the respondents had positive attitude towards STIs. Most mentioned choices as the information source of STIs were teacher (66.5%), followed by television/radio (45.3%), friends (37.8%), newspaper/magazine (21.2%), mother (16.2%), sibling (7.2%), and father (6.5%). Conclusions: More detail information about STIs is needed by adolescents as a way to encourage safe sexual practices. Teacher and parents are expected to be the source information of STIs while mass media can also be used to educate adolescents. Education on STIs for teachers is also needed since they are as the main source for educating the adolescents.

EXPLORING THE KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS PREVENTIVE PRACTICES OF SEXUAL TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS AMONG BASIC 8 PUPILS IN KALADAN

Background: Sexual risk behaviors are defined as sexual activities that may make an individual liable to the risk of sexually transmitted infections including Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and unplanned pregnancies. Adolescents engage in sexual intercourse before finishing junior high school. Adolescents are at high risk of developing sexual risk behavior. The rate of risky sexual behaviors and the spread of STIs continue to be increase among the adolescent population. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the knowledge and attitudes towards prevention of STIs among basic 8 pupils of Kaladan SDA JHS in the Tamale metropolis Methods: Institution based descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among Kaladan SDA JHS Tamale from 5th November, 2022 to 10th December, 2022. The study respondents were selected through systematic random sampling techniques and the data was collected through self-administered questionnaires and interview guide. A sample size of 110 were selected and the data analysis was carried out quantitatively using the computer packages, STATA version 14 for analysis. Results: 110 respondents participated in this study of those 93% of them have awareness of the existence of sexual transmitted infections including HIV. However, 57% and 67% of the respondents have poor knowledge on sign and symptoms and effects of STIs respectively. Among the total study respondents, about 80% of them had previously practiced in sexual activity. 73% of the respondent said they never tested for STIs, of which 46% feel it is not necessary to go for a test and 38% feel shy. From the respondents who had practiced sex, 33% of them had always used condom during their sexual intercourse with their partners, while 50% of them never used condom during sexual intercourse and 17% sometimes. Conclusions: Regardless of adolescents’ knowledge on the existence of STIs, they still have inadequate essential information about STIs, hence large number of the adolescents have been practicing risky sexual behaviors that might predispose them for different sexual and reproductive health problems. Therefore, the school should emphasize on promoting peer educators and peer discussion to protect adolescents and youth from risky sexual behaviors.

Investigating the Knowledge of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in University Students of Iran

Background: Unprotected sex, multi partnership, no or inconsistent use of the condom can be mentioned as risk behaviors putting youth at high risk to Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). The present study aimed to investigate the knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases in the university students of Shahroud in Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Shahroud city of Iran. 1500 female and male students in the age bracket of 18-24 were included in the study. Multistage sampling was employed. Knowledge of sexually transmitted infections and risky behaviours: a survey among high school and university students

Introduction: STIs are a serious public health problem. Worldwide, 500 million people a year acquire a STI, and young are the most affected. Methods: This study was conducted administering an anonymous questionnaire to 1228 Sicilian students of high school and university. Results: The students had variable understanding of STIs and their complications. The results demonstrate an extreme variability in the knowledge of STIs. Multiple linear regression showed that sexual health knowledge was associated with age and sexual orientation. Conclusions: Our results show that knowledge of STIs is poor and inadequate. This finding can put students at risk of STIs.
