Biological activities of phenolic compounds extracted from flaxseed meal

Background There is a worldwide demand for phenolic compounds (PC) because they exhibit several biological activities. The present investigation deals with a comprehensive study on the biological activities of phenolic compounds extracted from flaxseed meal (FM) with the aid of ultrasonic waves. Results The antioxidant activity of the PC extract of FM is considerably high when measuring it by the three methods (the β-carotene coupled oxidation method, the DPPH free radical scavenging activity method, and measuring the reducing antioxidant power). The toxicity test revealed that the PC extract was nontoxic on normal retina cell line. Also, it has no anticoagulating activity. Evaluation of antimicrobial activity showed that it is effective towards four strains only from seven. Flaxseed is the chief oilseed crop that is grown in many regions of the world for medicinal and nutritional purposes. It has been used for oil and fiber since centuries. Flaxseed has an enormous role in functional foods for its nutritional and pharmaceutical values. Among the various components of flaxseed lignans, phenolic acids, proteins and oil are of the main interest. Oil and lignans have prime concentrations in the flaxseed. To study the extraction of these compounds, various extraction methods have been investigated. Oil has been extracted by mechanical pressing in ancient times but presently new techniques have been developed. Comparison of Soxhlet and Ultrasound Methods for Oil Extraction from Spanish Flaxseeds

Flaxseed oil contains an outstanding amount of the essential fatty acid α-linolenic acid (18:3n-3), as well as other ω-3 fatty acids, which can provide potential benefits in individuals with cardiovascular diseases. This explains the interest of food industries to improve the efficiency of oil extraction from flaxseed. In this sense, the feasibility of two extraction methods (Soxhlet and ultrasounds) has been evaluated through the determination of the amount of oil obtained from 9 flaxseed trademarks (Linum usitatissimum L.). The Soxhlet method extracted more oil than the ultrasounds, with mean values being 36.9 and 20.0%, respectively. Aside from the extraction method, flaxseed trademark was also an influencing variable. In this context, the highest extraction yield (53%) was detected when the Soxhlet method in combination with petroleum ether were used with trademark 1 (raw golden flaxseed). However, further studies are needed to evaluate the quality and safety of the extracted oils.

Optimization of Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Total Flavonoids and Antioxidant Properties from Trigonella Foenum-Graecum Seeds with Response Surface Methodology

Trigonella foenum-graecum is an annual plant in the family Fabaceae. The distinctive cuboid-shaped, yellow to amber coloured fenugreek seeds are frequently encountered in the cuisines of the Indian subcontinent. In this study, Trigonella foenum-graecum is used as an experimental matrix. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of total flavonoids from Trigonella foenum-graecum is studied with dual wavelength UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Effects of various factors including ratio of material to liquid, ultrasonic time, methanol concentration and extraction times on extraction yield of total flavonoids are evaluated. Then, optimization of total flavonoid compound (TFC) extraction from Trigonella foenum-graecum seed is investigated using response surface methodology (RSM) in this paper.
