Beyond Words
This article is aimed at presenting a step by step into digital stories creation in a language classroom that teachers may adapt or adopt for their classroom purposes. At the outset, it will explore the nature of digital storytelling and empirical evidence of digital storytelling implementation across levels. Additionally, the article proposes ideas on how collaborative learning can be integrated in the making of digital storytelling. The design and implementation of pedagogical task emphasize on giving more opportunities for students to engage in the genre based collaborative digital stories project and foster their critical thinking and creativity. At the end of this article, alternative assessment is promoted to assess the learning process as well as the students' project of digital storytelling. Providing students with scaffold activities, I contend that every language teacher now can empower their learners to become digital storytellers.
Developing a framework for advancing e-learning through digital storytelling
Digital Storytelling is an innovative pedagogical approach that has the potential to engage learners in student-centered learning, and enhance learning outcomes across the curriculum. This paper describes how to develop a framework for advancing e-Learning systems through digital storytelling. It starts with an overview of digital storytelling and the learning environments, also describes some current models of digital storytelling. Furthermore, the paper discusses the benefits of digital storytelling in the classroom, and concludes with an overview of the research that needs to be conducted to test the efficacy of the proposed e-Learning Digital Storytelling framework on several dimensions.
Transforming Pedagogies Through Digital Storytelling: Framework and Methodology
Digital storytelling is an innovative pedagogical approach that can engage both students and teachers, helping them tap into the power of digital technologies and contribute to more engaged teaching and learning. This paper presents an overview of a research project which aims to explore the pedagogical benefits of digital storytelling. It describes how to create constructivist learning environments with digital storytelling. The paper started with an overview of digital storytelling, and its pedagogical benefits in the classrooms. The paper also introduces the e-Learning Digital Storytelling framework (eLDiSt), and concludes with an overview of the research methodology, with a brief introduction to each stage of the research, focusing on the digital story workshop, and explains teachers’ roles and students’ tasks. Powerful Tools for Teaching and Learning: Digital Storytelling
ENGLISH EDUCATION: JOURNAL OF ENGLISH TEACHING AND RESEARCH, 2016
Digital storytelling is the telling of stories using computer-based tools to tell stories. It combines the art of telling stories with a variety of multimedia, including graphics, audio, video, and Web publishing. In the field of education, teachers and their students, from early childhood classrooms through graduate school, are using digital storytelling in many different content areas and across a wide range of grade levels. The purpose of this article is to explain the way how the digital storytelling can be created. There are five steps in creating digital storytelling in this workshop. 1. Determine Topic and Write a Script, 2. Collect Digital Resources, 3. Select Content and Develop a Storyboard, 4. Import, Record, Finalize, and 5. Share, Teach, Improve. It is expected that after having completed reading this article, the readers can create their own digital storytelling for educational use. Key Words: Digital Storytelling, Computer Based Tools
The Effectiveness of Digital Storytelling in the Classrooms: A Case Study
2013
In recent years the use of new technologies in educational systems has increased worldwide as digital cameras, personal computers, scanners, and easy-to-use software have become available to educators to harness the digital world. The impact of new technologies in educational contexts has been mostly positive as new technologies have given educators the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, skills, and therefore enhance the standard of education. Researchers have found that student engagement, achievement and motivation are enhanced through integration of such technologies. However, education systems still face many challenges: one of these challenges is how to enhance student engagement to provide better educational outcomes. It has become increasingly important to use innovative pedagogical models to engage learners. Digital storytelling is one of the innovative pedagogical approaches that can engage students in deep and meaningful learning. This research project aimed to create a constructivist learning environment with digital storytelling. The research investigated the pedagogical aspects of digital storytelling and the impact of digital storytelling on student learning when teachers and students use digital stories. A multi-site case study was conducted in one Australian school at primary and secondary levels. In selected classrooms, students and teachers had the opportunity to engage in innovative learning experiences based on digital storytelling. In order to enhance the reliability and validity of the research, multiple methods of data collection and analysis were used. Data was collected with qualitative and quantitative methods. An evaluation rubric was used to collect quantitative data, while interviews and observation were used to collect qualitative data. Data collection was guided by a mixed methods research design in order to evaluate if and how digital storytelling enhances teaching and learning outcomes. The findings from this study suggest that digital storytelling is a powerful tool to integrate instructional messages with learning activities to create more engaging and exciting learning environments. It is a meaningful approach for creating a constructivist learning environment based on novel principles of teaching and learning. Thus, this approach has the potential to enhance student engagement and provide better educational outcomes for learners.
Storytelling and Web 2.0 Services: A synthesis of old and new ways of learning
2009
Storytelling was for a long period the only way people had to learn from each other's experiences. Even today there are still some cultures which have a strong storytelling tradition. In this article we present the outcomes and experiences we acquired during the realization of several EU educational projects in which we combined storytelling and Web 2.0 services. The combined method has proved to provide several learning advantages in educational projects, namely: − understanding of and empathy towards other races and cultures is increased; − auditory processing skills and listening skills are supported and practiced; − memory is enhanced and attention spans are extended; − factual and conceptual curriculum material is effectively and efficiently taught.
Integrate Digital Storytelling in Education
Journal of Education and Practice, 2015
In the 21st century, educators believe using technology can be an effective factor in education for the new generation, making educational goals easier to achieve. In fact, technology is being studied by teachers and implemented into classrooms for a positive effect on student learning. Many teachers are integrating multimedia tools in teaching students different skills including synthesizing, analyzing, evaluating, and presenting information. When students use technology, they learn to convert data into information and transform information into knowledge. Also, using multimedia tools gives students the opportunity to participate and interact in the classroom. Consequently, the trend for integrating technology into education has become more widespread in most schools today. Digital storytelling is one of the multimedia tools that can support teaching and learning as well as students' motivation. This research explores how digital storytelling can be an effective tool for both teachers and students in order to support learning and skills.
Student-driven knowledge creation through digital storytelling
2016
This publication will introduce how two different countries promote high quality learning with technology in very different educational systems. The book opens inspiring scenarios how new technological tools and services can be used for promoting students’ learning in schools and higher education, enhancing collaboration in educational communities and supporting teachers’ professional development. The publication focuses on three major themes: Students as knowledge and art creators in playful learning systems, personalized learning supported by mobiles and intelligent tutoring systems with games and new web-based tools identifying learning difficulties, and technology in digitalized learning environments. The book is based on systematic research work in universities.
The Instructional Value of Digital Storytelling
The Instructional Value of Digital Storytelling, 2014
Although storytelling has been recognized as an effective instructional strategy for some time, most educators are not informed about how to communicate a story that supports learning-particularly when using digital media. The Instructional Value of Digital Storytelling provides a broad overview of the concepts and traditions of storytelling and prepares professors, workplace trainers, and instructional designers to tell stories through 21 st century media platforms, providing the skills critical to communication, lifelong learning, and professional success. Using clear and concise language, The Instructional Value of Digital Storytelling explains how and why storytelling can be used as a contemporary instructional method, particularly through social media, mobile technologies, and knowledge-based systems. Examples from different sectors and disciplines illustrate how and why effective digital stories are designed with learning theory in mind. Applications of storytelling in context are provided for diverse settings within higher education as well as both formal and informal adult learning contexts.
