Puntius Dolichopterus, A New Fish Species (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae), from Kerala, India

International Journal of Pure and Applied Zoology, 2015

Puntius dolichopterus, a new species of the family cyprinidae, is described from a freshwater stream at Kayamkulam of Kerala, India. It is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: Dorsal fin short and located a little behind the ventral fin origin; third dorsal ray osseous, rigid and strong, its spinous portion longer, 51.2- 52.2 % HL; pectoral fin long and reaches pelvic fin origin; pelvic fin extends to vent; lateral line scales 23- 24 + 1- 2; pre dorsal scales 8; 3- 4 longitudinal lines present below lateral line; a narrow and short depression present on occiput. The new species is compared with its closely related species.

Puntius nigronotus, a new fish species (cypriniformes; cyprinidae) from Kerala, India

2014

Puntius nigronotus, a new fish species of the family Cyprinidae, is described from Mananthavady River of Kerala, India. It is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: body deeper, maxillary barbels shorter and never reach nostrils, dorsal fin shorter, 9 branched rays in dorsal fin and 6 branched rays in anal fin, last unbranched dorsal fin ray feebly ossified and flexible, 27 lateral line scales, pre pelvic distance greater, caudal peduncle wide and lateral line straight

Puntius euspilurus, a new fish species (cypriniformes: cyprinidae) from Kerala, India

Puntius euspilurus, a new fish species of the family cyprinidae, is described from Wayanad of Kerala, India. It is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: body elongated, rounded and slender, barbels feeble and never reach orbit or nostrils; last simple dorsal fin ray feebly osseous and flexible, 23-24 lateral line scales, 2½ scales between lateral line and ventral fin and elongated pectoral fin which reaches to ventral fin.

Puntius viridis (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae), a new fish species from Kerala, India

Journal of Research in Biology, 2014

Taxonomic analysis of eight specimens of a cyprinid fish collected from Manimala River, Kerala, India revealed that they present several morphological differences from their congeners. The new species, Puntius viridis, is diagnosed by a combination of the following characters: eyes clearly visible from below ventral side; head depth lesser; one row of prominent elongated black spots on the middle of dorsal fin; a black band formed of dark spots present outer to operculum. 25-26 lateral line scales; 4½- 5½ scales between lateral line and dorsal fin; moderate scales on the breast region

Puntius nelsoni, Systomus chryseus and S. rufus (cypriniformes: cyprinidae), three new fish species from Kerala, India

Puntius nelsoni, a new species of the family cyprinidae, is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: body and fins yellowish; a narrow bluish green mark present on summit of occiput; a thin black band present outer to operculum; barbels short and never reach orbit; head wide and deep; snout shorter; vent located away from ventral fin origin; caudal peduncle long; scales between lateral line and dorsal fin 5 ½ and pre dorsal scales 9. Systomus chryseus, new species, differs from its relative species in having an unusually elongated body, golden to yellowish golden color on flanks, pectoral, pelvic and anal fins orange red; pectoral fin long and its tip reaches origin of ventral fin; lateral line scales 29-30 and pre dorsal scales 11. Systomus rufus, new species, differs from its congeners in having a deeper body; dorsal fin situated nearer to caudal fin base than snout tip and a little behind ventral origin; dorsal fin green and other fins red; 11-12 pre dorsal scales, 30 lateral line scales and 6½ scales between lateral line and dorsal fin base. The new species of fishes are described and compared with its related species

A synopsis of the South Asian fishes referred to Puntius (Pisces: Cyprinidae)

2012

The tropical Asian cyprinid genus Puntius, which contains some 120 valid species, has long been suspected to be polyphyletic. Here, through an examination of external morphology, osteology, and analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome b gene fragments from 31 South Asian species hitherto referred to Puntius, we show that these fishes represent at least five lineages recognisable as genera. Puntius sensu stricto has the rostral barbels absent; last unbranched dorsal-fin ray weak or strong, smooth; and lateral line complete, with 22-28 pored scales. Systomus possesses maxillary and rostral barbels; last unbranched dorsal-fin ray stiff ('osseous'), serrated; and lateral line complete, with 27-34 scales. Three new genera are proposed: Dawkinsia (type species Leuciscus fila mentosus) is distinguished by lacking rostral barbels; having the last unbranched dorsal-fin ray smooth; lateral line complete, with 18-22 scales; and a juvenile colour pattern that includes three black bars on the body. Dra vidia (type species Cirrhinus fasciatus) is distinguished by having both rostral and maxillary barbels present; lateral line complete, with 18-26 pored scales; dorsal fin with 4 unbranched and 8 branched rays, last unbranched dorsal-fin ray smooth; infraorbital 3 deep, partly overlapping the preoperculum; and free uroneural and postepiphysial fontanelle absent. Pethia (type species Barbus nigrofasciatus) is distinguished by having the last unbranched dorsal-fin ray stiff, serrated; infraorbital 3 deep, partially overlapping preoperculum; rostral barbels absent; maxillary barbels absent or minute; a black blotch on the caudal peduncle; and frequently, black blotches, spots or bars on the side of the body. The identities of Puntius sophore and Systomus immaculatus are clarified through the designation of neotypes; a lectotype is designated for Neolissochilus bovanicus; and precedence is given to the spelling bovanicus over bovianicus.

Taxonomic Notes on Puntius species of South India

Egyptian Academic Journal of Biological Sciences, B. Zoology

Puntius, the most common cyprinids of south India, are widely used as ornamental and food fishes; they are abundantly distributed in diverse freshwater bodies of Kerala and adjacent states of India. Various taxonomic studies have been conducted on them during the last decade; discovery, description, redescription, splitting of taxa etc._ are more common in it compared to other taxa; it may be due to the unique species richness and high variability prevailing in the genus. Even though a lot of research works had been done on the genus, a consolidated account of all the species of Puntius is currently lacking; it is an endeavour for solving this difficulty. An account of all currently recognised Puntius species of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are included; their essential taxonomic details such as diagnostic characters and current status are inserted; a brief account of insufficiently known and forgotten fishes also entailed.
