The main objective of the present study is the investigation of small indigenous freshwater ornamental fish diversity of Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram districts of West Bengal, India and emphasis has been given to their ornamental value and local abundance. Present study is restricted only on the fish species belonging to the genus Puntius. During the study, small freshwater fish species has been surveyed covering all blocks of the three districts under study. Specimens have been collected from different freshwater ecosystems like rivers, ponds, beels etc. and are preserved and identified. It has been observed that the study area represents the existence of nine species of indigenous freshwater small fishes under genus Puntius. Among the recorded nine species, two species, namely Puntius guganio (Hamilton-Buchanan, 1822) and Puntius gelius (Hamilton-Buchanan, 1822) are being found for the first time from the study site. All the nine species are potential to be regarded as ornamental fish. A detail distributional data has been provided for all the species of the genus from the study area. Therefore, present study will highlight the local macro-faunal diversity of the freshwater fish species under genus Puntius as well as ability to become ornamental fish for aquarium keeping. Record of two small fish species from the freshwater ecosystem of the study area is the new addition to the local fish faunal diversity
Taxonomic Notes on Puntius species of South India
Egyptian Academic Journal of Biological Sciences, B. Zoology
Puntius, the most common cyprinids of south India, are widely used as ornamental and food fishes; they are abundantly distributed in diverse freshwater bodies of Kerala and adjacent states of India. Various taxonomic studies have been conducted on them during the last decade; discovery, description, redescription, splitting of taxa etc._ are more common in it compared to other taxa; it may be due to the unique species richness and high variability prevailing in the genus. Even though a lot of research works had been done on the genus, a consolidated account of all the species of Puntius is currently lacking; it is an endeavour for solving this difficulty. An account of all currently recognised Puntius species of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are included; their essential taxonomic details such as diagnostic characters and current status are inserted; a brief account of insufficiently known and forgotten fishes also entailed.
Puntius nigronotus, a new fish species (cypriniformes; cyprinidae) from Kerala, India
2014
Puntius nigronotus, a new fish species of the family Cyprinidae, is described from Mananthavady River of Kerala, India. It is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: body deeper, maxillary barbels shorter and never reach nostrils, dorsal fin shorter, 9 branched rays in dorsal fin and 6 branched rays in anal fin, last unbranched dorsal fin ray feebly ossified and flexible, 27 lateral line scales, pre pelvic distance greater, caudal peduncle wide and lateral line straight

Arunachal Pradesh is geographically the largest state in NorthEast region of India with rich lentic and lotic water resources. The state has more than 7000 ha of lentic water and 2000 km of lotic water resources. Arunachal Pradesh is the 18 th hot spot of the world in view of the richness of biological diversity. It constitutes high endemism and comparatively higher incidence of rare and threatened taxa. Available literature suggests that Puntius terio has not been reported earlier from the aquatic habitat of Arunachal Pradesh except in West Bengal, Assam, Manipur and Tripura in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. This fish has incomplete lateral line with 22 to 24 scales on the lateral line, barbels absent, dorsal fin spine smooth and osseous and round golden-edged black blotch on 16 th to 18 th scales. The present finding of the threatened fish, P. terio requires its conservation in the water system of the biodiversity hot spot, Arunachal Pradesh.
Puntius dolichopterus, a new fish species..Published
Puntius dolichopterus, a new species of the family cyprinidae, is described from a freshwater stream at Kayamkulam of Kerala, India. It is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters:
Puntius viridis (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae), a new fish species from Kerala, India
Journal of Research in Biology, 2014
Taxonomic analysis of eight specimens of a cyprinid fish collected from Manimala River, Kerala, India revealed that they present several morphological differences from their congeners. The new species, Puntius viridis, is diagnosed by a combination of the following characters: eyes clearly visible from below ventral side; head depth lesser; one row of prominent elongated black spots on the middle of dorsal fin; a black band formed of dark spots present outer to operculum. 25-26 lateral line scales; 4½- 5½ scales between lateral line and dorsal fin; moderate scales on the breast region
Species Diversity and Habitat Inventory of Puntius sp. from Various Water Bodies of South India
2017
Freshwater ecosystems contain only about 0.01% of the Earth’s water and the system accounts about 45% of fish species known to date. Alteration in the micro and macro habitats in the system severely affects the aquatic life especially fishes and also complicates the fish taxonomy. Among the different kinds of fresh water fishes, the fishes grouped under the genus Puntius, belonging to Cypriniformes family, have been considered as an important protein source of daily diets of human beings in south India, in particular. The inter-genetic and intra-genetic relationships of the Puntius species have not yet been well understood to date and the species are reported to exist in various water bodies of peninsular India. In the present study, a total of 168 individuals of the 17 species of genus Puntius have been collected from 31 locations of six river systems (meandering eastward flowing rivers of Bhavani, Moyar, Chalakudy, Periyar, Cauvery and Kabini) of Southern Western Ghats. The data a...

Puntius euspilurus, a new fish species of the family cyprinidae, is described from Wayanad of Kerala, India. It is distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: body elongated, rounded and slender, barbels feeble and never reach orbit or nostrils; last simple dorsal fin ray feebly osseous and flexible, 23-24 lateral line scales, 2½ scales between lateral line and ventral fin and elongated pectoral fin which reaches to ventral fin.
