Hymenaea stigonocarpa, is an endemic tree from the Brazilian cerrado (savannah) and popularly known as jatobá-do-cerrado. The wood of this species is resistant to biodegradation and is used in naval and civil construction. Cuttings from heartwood of this species showed resistance to fungi and termites. In this paper, we report the antitermitic and antioxidant activities of H. stigonocarpa heartwood ethyl acetate extract and its main flavonoids constituents, hultenin (1), taxifolin (2), quercetin (3) and 7methoxycathequin (4). The structure elucidation of the isolated flavonoids was performed by spectroscopic methods. The ethyl acetate extract possesses highest antitermitic and antioxidant activity when compared with isolated flavonoids.
III WOCMAP Congress on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants - Volume 1: Bioprospecting and Ethnopharmacology, 2005
The project encompasses plants from the following families: Palmae, Lamiaceae, Acanthaceae, Leguminosae and Gesneriaceae. Regarding the pharmacology, several models have been used like antinociceptive, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, molluscicidal, anti-diabetes, anti-microbial and nitric oxide production inhibition. Results showed that utilizing ethnopharmacological information is a very important way to search for new bioactive molecules. It is noteworthy to mention the activity of Açaí fruit extracts in the inhibition of nitric oxide production. It was also possible to identify flavonoids responsible for the antidiabetic activity in plants belonging to the family Leguminosae. Acanthaceae extracts showed important antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities, as they are very rich in steroids and triterpenes. The same could be said about plants belonging to Lamiaceae that gave several examples of this kind of pharmacological property due to its steroid and triterpenoid compounds. One specie of Lamiaceae also produced a great amount of dihydroxylated triterpenoids with great molluscicidal potencial. Palmae species, rich in fatty acids and steroids led to enriched extracts responsible for the anti-BPH activities. Plants belonging to Gesneriaceae were antioxidant due to their flavonoid content. Polar extracts and isolated molecules, isolated from many species were able to donate hydrogen radical to DPPH.
Bioactive Triterpenoids from the Twigs of Chaenomeles sinensis.pdf
Chaenomeles sinensis has been consumed traditionally for the treatment of throat diseases, diarrhea, inflammatory diseases, and dry beriberi. Repeated chromatography of the CHCl 3 -soluble fraction from the 80% MeOH extract of C. sinensis twigs led to the isolation of three new triterpenoids, sinenic acid A (1), 3β-O-cis-feruloyl-2α,19αdihydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid (2), and 3β-O-cis-caffeoylbetulin (3), together with 20 analogues. The chemical structures of 1−3 were determined using diverse NMR techniques and HRMS data analysis, chemical methods, and computational approaches supported by advanced statistics (CP3). All the purified compounds were evaluated not only for their cytotoxicity against four human tumor cell lines (A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, and HCT-15) but for their potential neuroprotective effects through induction of nerve growth factor in C6 glioma cells. Their anti-inflammatory effects were also assessed by measuring nitric oxide levels in lipopolysaccharide-insulted murine microglia BV2 cells.
The Scientific World Journal, 2013
The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of different extracts and fractions obtained fromHymenaea stigonocarpastem barks. The cyclohexanic, ethyl acetate, ethanol, aqueous, and hydroalcoholic extracts were obtained by maceration. The hydroalcoholic extract was partitioned, which resulted in the ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions. All extracts and fractions were subjected to phytochemical screening and evaluation of total phenol and tannin contents. An HPLC-DAD and ultrastructural alterations analysis were performed. Terpenes and coumarins were detected in the cyclohexanic extract. Flavonoids and condensed tannins were present in the other extracts and fractions. The extracts with the highest contents of tannins, ethanol (EE), hydroalcoholic (HE), and aqueous fraction (AF) showed also the highest antimicrobial activity. The MIC values ranged from 64 to 526 µg/mL. The chromatographic fingerprints suggest the presence of astilbin and other flavonoids in EE ...
Evaluation of Phytochemical Constituents of Indian Medicinal Plant Hydnocarpus alpina WIGHT
Hydnocarpus alpina WIGHT. is a evergreen forest plant. It is an endemic plant to western ghats of India. Several local names are available based on distribution among the state in india that is Torathi (kanada), Maravetti (Malayalam), attuchankalai (tamil), kastel (hindi). This tree has very appreciated value in the aspect of medicine. It has anti-larvicidal, anti-feedant, anti-microbial and etc. It has the medicinal properties due to the presence of its significant chemical constituents. In this paper revealed that the IR spectrum and chemical constituents which are present in different solvents (chloroform, pet.ether, ethanol, water).
Research, Society and Development
The genus Hymenaea belongs to the Fabaceae family and has species distributed from Central America to South America in the Amazon. The wood of these species are widely used in civil construction, as well as the leaves, roots, sap and bark to treat inflammatory and respiratory diseases, infections, tumors and pain. This systematic review aimed to identify the biological activities associated with tannins and flavonoids in Hymenaea courbaril and Hymenaea stigonocarpa. Thus, research articles published between 2009 and 2019 that directly address this topic were searched using the following descriptors: Hymenaea AND flavonoids AND tannins AND biological activities AND medicinal plant, in PubMed Central, Web of Science, Scopus and Science Direct databases. The results obtained suggest that tannins and flavonoids are among the main compounds involved with potential antifungal and termiticidal effects, in addition to antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiarrheal, antiulcer, anti-inflammatory, ...
Natural Products Chemistry & Research
n-hexane soluble ethylacetate extract (HIB-EA-HS) of bark of Holoptelea integrifolia (Roxb.) Planch was analyzed on GC-MS. The identified triterpinoids included: β-sitosterol (1), olean-13(18)-ene (2), betulin (3), α-amyrenone (4), stigmasta-3, 5-diene-7-one (5), stigmast-4-en-3-one (6), friedelan-3-ol (7), and citrost-7-en-3-ol (8). Triterpenes (1), (3) and (7) have been reported previously but the other triterpenes (2), (4), (5), (7), and (8) were identified first time from the bark extract of H. integrifolia (Roxb.) Planch. Phytosteroids are an important class of natural products, and all these metabolites are quite known and common in higher plants. Important biological functions of the phytosterols induced LDL-cholesterol reducing potential and anti-colon cancer activity.
The constituents of medicinal plants
2021
This new edition is a comprehensive introduction to the main phytochemical classes found in plants that are understood to confer their therapeutic activity. A major advantage is that the book assumes only a basic understanding of chemistry, making it an ideal primer for students and practitioners alike. However, it quickly brings the reader into more sophisticated territory, without falling into the trap of being overly reductionist or technical. Key features are the many chemical diagrams and the wide-ranging discussion of pharmacological activities and safety considerations. The new third edition has been thoroughly revised to incorporate the latest research. It contains a new chapter on resins and cannabinoids, and additional content on essential oil chemotypes, the important area of mushroom polysaccharides, together with a discussion of phytochemical synergy and updates on the toxicology of plant constituents. Other chapters have been considerably expanded. For example, the pol...
