The Influence of School Type on Students' Attitudes towards Mathematics in Quetta, Pakistan

The purpose of this study was to find out the influence of school type on students’ attitudes towards mathematics at the secondary level in Quetta, Pakistan. The sample in this study was 387 students of grade nine of which 186 were government and 201 were private secondary school students selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected through an adapted questionnaire and students were asked to indicate their degree of agreement with each statement in the questionnaire, from ‘strongly disagree’ to ‘strongly agree’. Non-parametric equivalent of the independent t-test was used for statistical analysis. According to the results of the analysis, overall students, irrespective of government and private schooling systems, indicated highly positive attitudes towards mathematics. Factors Influencing the Attitudes of Secondary School Students Towards the Study of Mathematics

It is a known fact that there exist behavioral difficulties among Mathematics students in Estiwani as a result of unresolved attitudinal issues that either the students are not aware of, or that the issues are not properly dealt with. This work seeks to investigate some factors influencing the attitude of secondary school students toward studying Mathematics in the Manzini region. Five schools consisting of two boys-only, two girls-only, and one mixed school were been carefully selected for the investigation. A total of 200 students and 15 qualified teachers were randomly and actively engaged. A combination of the discrete and continuous data collected through observations and using a well-designed questionnaire was carefully analyzed from their graphical representations. It was found that the majority of the students showed a huge gap in the content knowledge and also presented a clear negative attitude towards Mathematics as a subject. The Examination of the Attitudes of Students Enrolled from the 3rd to 8th Year towards Mathematics

This study was carried out in order to determine how students’ attitudes towards mathematics changed according to their school and grade levels, and to examine which factors affected students’ attitudes from the views of students and teachers. This study was conducted with 698 primary third to eighth grade students, 367 of whom were male and 331 of whom were female and 6 mathematics teachers studying in those schools. Data of the study were collected by means of two instruments, Mathematics Attitudes Scale (MAS) and semi-structured interview. Obtained data were analyzed both statistically and descriptively. At the end of the study, it was observed that there is a meaningful difference in students’ attitudes towards mathematics according to schools. This research, which is carried out in Kinik, İzmir, aims at determining the reasons of students’ attitude towards Maths. Sixth class students from Kinik town make up population of the research which has been carried out as the model of survey. The sample of the research has been determined by the method of “purposeful sampling”. It is constituted of 152 students at the sixth grade. Collected data has been transferred into SPSS and the statistical process such as, analysis of average, standard deviation, T-test and one way analysis of variance procedures have been realized. It has been identified that the students who gets higher grades at Maths have got better attitude towards Maths than the ones who got lower grades at Maths. It has been identified that there has been no relationship between the students’ attitude towards Maths and their families’ income, their parents’ educational status, their parents’ occupation and the teachers’ way of teaching.

The emergent role of attitude in the learning of Mathematics has attracted the attention of Mathematics educators for a very long time. Students’ attitude towards mathematics has been a generator that is known to influence their performance in mathematics. This study has attempted to find out HS students’ attitude towards mathematics and further investigate any disparity in attitude between students in different streams of study. The population for the study were the HS students in southern districts of West Bengal. The sample consisted of 784 students, both male and female, from 25 schools. The tool used was “Modified Fennema Sherman Mathematics Attitude Scale” (Depaken, Lawsky and Padwa, 1993). The results show that the attitude of students with different streams of study is significantly different. In particular, science students have the best attitude while that of arts students is significantly poorer than students in the other streams of study

The research investigated the effect of socioeconomic status, gender, perceived parental influences, teacher affective support, classroom instruction and previous achievement on students' attitude towards mathematics. The comparison of these effects was also done between urban and rural school students. This research employed a cross-sectional quantitative design based on a structural equation modelling approach. The sample consisted of 808 students from ten secondary schools in Sabah, three of which were urban and seven were rural schools. Findings showed positive relationships exist between perceived parental influences (r = .231), teacher affective support (r = .242), classroom instruction (r = .439), and previous achievement (r = .284) with students' attitude towards mathematics. The multigroup analysis for urban and rural students showed similar results as the whole student group. However, for urban students, classroom instruction (r = 0.352) and previous achievement (r =-0.363) had the greatest impact on attitude towards mathematics. For rural students, the highest impact on attitude towards mathematics was from classroom instruction (r = 0.452) and teacher affective support (r = 0.246). The least impact for both groups was perceived parental influence. This study implied that factors affected students' attitude towards mathematics in rural and urban secondary students are different.

High School Students' Attitudes towards Mathematics
The purpose of this study is to determine the attitudes of students studying at different types of high schools towards mathematics classes, and to test whether or not there is a meaningful difference between the demographic properties of the students and their attitudes. The data used in this study were obtained from 1,801 students studying at different types of high schools. The data obtained in the study showed that the attitudes of the students towards mathematics are at medium level, and that there is a meaningful difference between the attitudes of the students towards mathematics classes and the education levels of their fathers and the students' high school types. On the other hand, it has been determined that there is no meaningful difference between the gender of the students, the gender of the mathematics teachers, attending to an extra course, receiving private lessons for mathematics, their perceived success status, educational levels of their mothers, the income level of their families, the number of siblings, the order of the student in the family as a sibling, fathers' and mothers' profession, and the attitudes of the students. According to the Multi Linear Regression Analysis which was performed with the purpose of determining the factors affecting the attitudes of the students in the study group, the Gender of the Mathematics Teacher (=-.073), the Profession of the Mother (=-.069) and the Educational Level of the Father (= .049) have effects in determining the attitudes of the students towards mathematics classes.

Student attitude and its impact on education has been an object of study for a number of academics in recent years. The main purpose of this study has been to corroborate and verify how students’ attitudes towards mathematics deteriorate as they progress through academic courses. A positive attitude towards the subject can be observed in the early years of primary school; however, this positivity starts to slightly decrease in subsequent years. Furthermore, it can be argued that attitude, as a factor affecting educational outcomes, is more influential than the cognitive factor.
