Attitudes and Knowledge of Medical Students about Distance Learning / Stavovi i znanje studenata medicine o učenju na daljinu

Acta Facultatis Medicae Naissensis, 2015

Distance learning can be defined as education or training offered to participants at a different place, physically distant from the lecturer or sources of information. The difference in attitudes and knowledge of students about distance learning in relation to gender and year of studying was examined. The study sample included 371 students of the Faculty of Medicine in Niš (165 students were at the first year of studies and 206 students were at the sixth year of studies). Originally structured epidemiological questionnaire was distributed to students. Gender and age had no significant influence on students’ knowledge of distance learning. There was no statistically significant difference in taking positive attitudes about distance learning among medical students of the first and sixth year. Gender has statistically significantly affected the attitudes. E-learning does not eliminate the existing methods of learning, but it supplements them and greatly helps in teaching plans and prog...

Comparing The Effectiveness Of Distance Learning And Onsite Learning In Pre-Medical Course

Recent Education research, 2023

Distance learning has experienced a significant surge in popularity due to the increasing digitalization of education. This study explores the effectiveness of distance learning compared to on-site learning in the context of pre-medical course students (grade 12). The research investigates students from the math science class and utilizes an online questionnaire in conjunction with the final results of the Thai Professional Aptitude Test (TPAT). Crucially, the research reveals that distance learning students tend to outperform their on-site counterparts in TPAT exams, although the difference is not overwhelmingly significant. This study contributes valuable insights into the growing impact of distance learning and its potential benefits for pre-medical course students. Further research and analysis in this domain could provide educators and institutions with valuable guidelines for optimizing educational approaches in the digital era.

Evidences of Validity of The Brazilian Scale of Learner's Attitude Towards Distance Education Programs

International Journal of Information and Communication Technology Education

Online learning is one of the fastest growing trends in educational uses of technology. In this study, an instrument to measure the social attitudes of the Brazilian students based on distance education was developed and validated. The study population consisted of public administration undergraduate students that has been providing by distance education by University of Brasília, in Brazil. The sample of the study consisted of 590 Brazilian students. The scale has 41 items, with total Cronbach alpha coefficient of .94, and reliability coefficient (KMO) of .94. The correlations of each item with total point were between .30 and .79. A factor analysis was run using direct oblimin rotation for construct validity, resulting in 4 factors structure explaining 47.12% of total variability. These factors are “Personnel and Dispositional Aspects”, “Procedural Characteristics”, “Negative Affects” and “Internalization and habituation of usage”. Consequently, findings show that The Brazilian At...

A Web-Based Distance Education Course in Nutrition in Public Health: Case study

Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2001

Background: Strict work timetables, personal and professional duties or an inability to be absent from home or work can all represent major constraints for those wishing to improve their professional skills. Within this context, the World Wide Web can allow people to conveniently follow distance courses from their homes. Objective: To present an experience in the use of the Web in the continuing education of healthcare professionals in Brazil. Methods: A Web-based distance education course in nutrition in public health was developed. The methodology was an adaptation of both problem-based and task-based learning. At the end of the course an evaluation questionnaire which covered the course's contents, the educational methodology and resources, the duration and schedule, and the use of the Web as a tool for distance education was given to the students. Results: There were 83 on line registrations from 13 states, 73 of the applicants were female, 62 had a degree in nutrition and 18 were physicians. From these; eleven students from ten states were chosen: nine female nutritionists, two female physicians, and one male physician. Seven students completed the course, took and passed the final exam. Of the other four students, two failed to follow the schedule, one had health problems, and one did not obtain the minimal score for sitting the final exam. The students had a mean age of 35, and a mean of ten years in practice. They all stated that they were unable to attend a regular course, even though they felt that they needed to improve their professional skills. Most of them studied seven days a week for between two and four hours a day. The students also felt that their professional skills had improved and each reported having made changes in their practice as a result of their participation. The students approved of the course's contents, methodology and resources, however they were divided about its duration. The Web as a tool in distance education was approved by the students. If it was not for the Web they could not have taken part in a continuing education program. All students said they would attend another virtual course, if available. Even though most of them did not have difficulty adapting to the virtual environment, they did feel that an adaptation period would be of value. Conclusions: A Web-based course may be more effective than other distance education methodologies because it is more interactive and dynamic. On-line material can be constantly reviewed and updated, and the students can have the opportunity to submit commentaries or questions directly to the teaching staff. A Web-based course also allows the students to go beyond the course content as they learn how to search and take advantage of the huge resources of information available on the Internet.
