Information Technology and Project Management: How To Avoid Failure and Achieve Project Success
Communication and information technology (IT) has developed rapidly within the last decade. As a result, project managers must be prepared to manage the current and future challenges within the project management field, as well as within the IT industry. Rapid globalization of business means organizations must significantly increase its capacity to accurately manage information and data. In response to this growing capacity demand, more discussion is needed to develop effective IT project management processes and approaches.
Project management process framework for developing and IT systems
Information Systems Development is a process that needs not only technical capabilities but management capabilities as well. Managing successfully the development process creates a number of qualitative and quantitative benefits to all being involved (suppliers and customers). On the other hand, managing technical people can be both risky and difficult. The methodology that needs to be followed for successful project management need to be quite flexible, measurable, well documented and well defined. This paper takes into consideration the prime stages and processes of 43 methodologies used mainly for information technology project management and creates a methodological framework for managing the systems development process. The framework is supported by best practices, and has been designed in such a way in order to integrate managerial and engineering principles in an adjustable manner. The structure of this framework allows its implementation to support projects of any type, size, and complexity, managed from any perspective (supplied or customer).
Information Technology Project Management Research: Recent Developments and Opportunities
Information Technology, 2006
Project management, and IT project management in particular, is complex and difficult. Literature and practice show IT projects are often late, over budget, unsuccessful, or canceled. One possible explanation for this poor track record is inadequate or ineffective project estimation. Another possible explanation is the complexity inherent in IT projects themselves. Several key sources for recent developments in IT project management were assessed, including the Project Management Institute, the Software Engineering Institute, the Standish Group, and leading academic journals. While recent work on project management maturity models holds out the hope for increased project rationality and predictability, other recent research into IT project failure and agile project management suggests greater flexibility is required. The emerging field of chaos theory and complex adaptive systems provides models and theories which may be adapted to IT project management, in particular addressing project organization, methodologies, and training and education.

The range of books reviewed is wide, covering theory and applications in operations research, statistics, management science, econometrics, mathematics, computers, and information systems (no software is reviewed). In addition, we include books in other fields that emphasize technical applications. Publishers who wish to have their books reviewed should send them to Professor Benjamin Lev. We list the books received; not all books received can be reviewed because space is limited. Those who would like to review books are urged to send me their names, addresses, and specific areas of expertise. We commission all reviews and do not accept unsolicited book reviews. A Methodology for Managing Large-Scale IT Projects (006)
Proceedings of Warwick Engineering Conference, 2007
This paper presents a project management methodology - developed part of an engineering doctorate research at Warwick University - for managing large scale IT projects with a focus on national ID programmes. The methodology was mainly tested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and was followed in three GCC countries. The research demonstrated that by following a formal structured methodology, governments will have better visibility and control over such programmes. The implementation revealed that the phases and processes of the proposed methodology supported the overall management, planning, control over the project activities, promoted effective communication, improved scope and risk management, and ensured quality deliverables.
