Preservation of digital literary works : another model of memory ?
Digital technology has raised great hopes in the field of heritage preservation. It has appeared as a solution to the problems of media decomposition and content accessibility. Theoretically, digital technology permits perfect reproduction, ubiquity (non competitive access to content), universality (any content can be digitalized) and homogeneity (the life cycle is integrated in an interoperable technical system). But in reality, one has to face issues such as the emergence of new formats and the logical obsolescence of content, the proliferation of transformed copies and complex and heterogeneous reading environments.
Securing the future of information: Digitisation and preservation of documents in e-Format
2003
Computers waved a (magic) wand and the whole process creation, access, delivery and preservation of information changed for the literary, scholarly, artistic, scientific and domestic community. Computers transformed the analogue world in to the digital world of 0 and 1. Digitisation came as a most wonderful and welcome tool in hands of libraries, museums, archives, societies, publishers, and others for preserving billions of paper/analogue documents in digital format for retaining their original look as well as with a point of view of their future relevance and potential. Preservation is the activity of protecting something from loss or danger. Digital preservation includes the preservation of print and non print material in digitised form for effective, efficient and purposeful use.
Challenges to long term digital preservation a glimpse of Italian experience
2009
In this paper an overview of the challenges to long term preservation of digital objects is given. We highlight threats, which can be posed by humans, hardware/software, environment and institutions to long term digital preservation systems, with specific emphasis to security threats. Some technological solutions are described, and the Italian experience on long term digital preservation is briefly described.
Digital Archives: Management, Use and Access. Edited by Milena Dobreva. [Review]
2019
Given the unique realities, modalities, and possibilities inherent in digital archives, Milena Dobreva assembled a team of writers to address the acute choices archivists face, such as what to preserve and how, for whom, by whom, and by what means, as well as upon what basis and toward what ends. This collection consists of nine chapters in two parts. The first part, "Drivers for Modern Digital Archives," sets the stage in broad terms and includes chapters on digital humanities, management, the political economy of digital cultural preservation, legal issues, scientific information, and access. The second part consists of case studies in research data archives, access restrictions, and oral history research. The contributors bring a truly global range of praxis and perspectives to their respective chapters, and each is an experienced practitioner. The occasional nation-specific details of a legal precedent or mode of implementation will not prevent alert readers from taking away substantive insights. Rather, the range of diversity enables readers to contextualize their own experiences, grasp the international or global impact of emerging issues, and participate in a dialogue despite peculiarities in practice.
Digital Preservation of Electronic Resources
Desidoc Journal of Library Information Technology, 2012
Due to huge advances in information communication technologies (ICTs), there has been an astronomical growth of e-resources-e-journals, e-books, online databases and so on; libraries spend phenomenally on acquisition of these e-resources as these are very popularly used by the students and researchers. Unfortunately, this growth is accompanied by many threats. Digital content (of the e-resources) is fragile and not durable. Its accessibility and use by future generations depends on technology which very rapidly evolves and changes. Hence, ensuring access of e-resources for future generation of users is a big challenge for libraries. The present paper highlights various problems of digital content and elaborates how digital preservation is more demanding and challenging than preserving print copies of journals. It also gives a bird's eye view of various projects initiated for archiving digital content of scholarly journals.
Preservation of digital literature: from stored to reinvented memory
2013
Regarding preservation, the digital age is the most fragile and complex context in the history of humanity. The added-value of digital technology is thus not where one expects. The digital medium is not a natural preservation medium, but digital technology makes us enter another universe which is a universe of reinvented and not stored memory. From this point of view, digital literature can be regarded as a good laboratory to address digital preservation: it makes it possible to raise the good questions and presents the digital age as a move from a model of stored memory to a model of reinvented memory.
LITERARY HERITAGE AND DIGITAL ARCHIVES
2021
The study examines the significance of the document, as well as its functions in the reference bibliographic, informational, and cultural-historical significance. The origin of the term "document" is traced, as well as the types of documents and their meaning and main functions for the benefit of the society and the government of the country. The second part of the study examines the problems of modern archiving in Bulgaria. It presents the guidelines in which the archival activity should be developed, such as the need for qualified personnel to accelerate the digitization processes.
