A Study of the Current Practice of Stakeholder Management in Construction Projects
2014
Over the past years, stakeholder management has been advocated as a means of increasing the propensity for successful delivery of construction projects. Previous research has focused on addressing the need for a practical guide to carry out stakeholder management in construction projects. However, full benefits expected from stakeholder management cannot be achieved without adequately addressing the following issues: stakeholder management decisions and responsibilities through the project life cycle; internal stakeholder collaboration in carrying out stakeholder management; stakeholder dynamics; and use of available techniques for stakeholder engagement. These issues were investigated using a questionnaire survey which aimed to explore the current practice of stakeholder management within the United Kingdom. The questionnaire comprised of closed and open-ended questions, the data from which were analysed using appropriate statistical techniques and thematic (content) analysis. The ...
A review on the issues and strategies of stakeholder management in the construction industry
In every project, particularly construction, there will be numerous parties involved, directly or indirectly, from the very beginning to the end of the physical life of the project. The parties involved amongst others are the owner, designers, consultants, builders, suppliers, financiers, lawyers as well as end users or the public. Stakeholders contributed and share their experiences, knowledge, insights to support the project throughout the project life and therefore it is crucial to capture their input. The needs and requirement of all stakeholders must be identified and properly managed to better facilitate the development of the project. This paper emphasises on the key issues of stakeholder management in relation to the construction industry. Important issues of stakeholders and strategies to managing the stakeholders are identified through out the discussions. This paper is based on a preliminary research, solely on literature reviews of available references. Hence, it provides...
A Framework for Stakeholder Management in Construction Projects
Journal of Management in Engineering, 2014
This paper presents a systematic and generic framework reference for the practice of stakeholder management in the construction industry. It contains findings from empirical studies, comprising six interviews, a pilot study, a questionnaire survey in Hong Kong and fifteen interviews in Australia. Six activity groups (i.e. precondition, project data identification, stakeholder estimation, decision making, action and evaluation, and sustainable support) and a total of 18 activities within these groups and their interrelations formulate the main body of the framework. The proposed framework was validated by five real-life projects, the results of which confirm the applicability of the proposed framework. This study serves as a reference for project management teams to systematically manage stakeholders in construction projects.
Study on the Influence of Stakeholders in Construction Projects
Journal of Construction Engineering and Project Management, 2014
The interactions and interrelationships between stakeholders largely determine the overall performance of a construction project, and have the crucial responsibility for delivering a project to successful completion. An important component of stakeholder management is stakeholder analysis. Two case studies are conducted within Kerala (India). The main objective was to carry out stakeholder analysis using stakeholder organiser deluxe software, considering the data's collected from the project execution team using questionnaire. During data collection the key stakeholders were identified, to know how to manage them, their interest, power, attitude level etc, for quality improvement. Analyze the results using the software Stakeholder organizer deluxe and modeling of stakeholders is to be done. Finally validate the models of the projects. These findings may mainly reflect the stakeholder management environment in the respective regions of project implementation.
The Link Between Stakeholder Power and Value Creation in Construction Projects
2016
This paper presents a study on what effect stakeholder power has on value creation in construction projects. Fourteen main sources of power in organizations, described by Morgan, form the analytic framework. The ambition is to identify 1) how the distribution of power between the main stakeholders is, 2) which sources of power are most common in a construction project organization, 3) which effect the sources of power have on value creation in projects. The data is collected through semi-structured interviews. Experienced representatives from four main stakeholders in early phase of construction projects (owner, architect, design manager and project manager) were interviewed. The collected data through the interviews was coded, analyzed and linked to the literature study. The results reveals that 10 of 14 sources of power are identified as common sources of power in construction project organizations. Out of the ten, control of knowledge & information and formal authority are rated ...
International Journal of Project Management, 2011
This paper concentrates on identifying gaps in the scope of previous studies on stakeholder management, and starting to address those gaps by conducting an empirical study. To complete these research objectives, literature review, interviews, questionnaire survey, and a case study were used in this study. Four gaps regarding critical success factors, stakeholder management process, methods for stakeholder management and stakeholder relationship management were identified. Based on an empirical study, a framework for effective stakeholder management is proposed, and the application of a Social Network Analysis technique, as a means of determining the influence of stakeholders on decision making, is illustrated and validated by a case study. These findings can serve as initial references towards a more systematic approach for stakeholder management. Since the empirical study was conducted only in Hong Kong and Australia, further studies should be conducted in other regions to validate and compare with the finding in this paper.

The purpose of this study is to examine the current level of stakeholder involvement during the project's planning process. Stakeholders often provide the needed resources and have the ability to control the interaction and resource flows in the network. They also ultimately have strong impact on an organisation's survival, and therefore appropriate management and involvement of key stakeholders should be an important part of any project management plan. A series of literature reviews was conducted to identify and categorise significant phases involved in the planning. For data collection, a questionnaire survey was designed and distributed amongst nearly 200 companies who were involved in the residential building sector in Australia. Results of the analysis demonstrate the engagement levels of the four stakeholder groups involved in the planning process and establish a basis for further stakeholder involvement improvement.
