"Where My Girls At?": Negotiating Black Womanhood in Music Videos

In this essay, I use Adele's 2012 Grammy performance as a case study to examine the racialized voice and the meaning of authenticity in cases of vocal racial passing. The juxtaposition of Adele's white appearance with a vocal tone and style that approximates black blues performers prompted enactments of white musical bordering, a rhetorical move to classify vocal performances according to race. I adapt a musicological perspective for critical communication studies to highlight the ways ambiguously raced bordering rhetorics prompt questions about the authenticity of “black” and “white” vocal performance. By approximating (what certain audiences understand to be) black female performance, Adele challenges popular music's racial bordering. Although this transgression is ultimately silenced through her ascribed visual whiteness and relegation to the white female-dominated pop category, this act of passing opens a space for discussion about the raced voice and the bordering practices that surround white musical authenticity.

This project contends that the pop cultural production of the subject of third wave feminism-an empowered sexy yet tough, glamorous yet powerful woman-is deeply entangled in racial symbolisms that ultimately reassert whiteness and maintain racial inequity. Investigating the songs, videos, and public performances of three contemporary white female pop stars-Fergie, Gwen Stefani, and Lady Gaga-This analysis unpack the ways that racial symbolisms, sublimated cultural memories, and repudiated racial narratives circulate in these stars' music, lyrics, and video narratives as well as visual indicators such as fashion, hair, make-up, and posture. Because these performances represent and promote female empowerment in ways contested, yet consistent, with third wave rhetoric, some feminist critics tend to dismiss the racial dynamics as incidental or include them only in apologetic footnotes. This project not only re-centers race as a primary investigative lens, but examines how many of the discourses of female empowerment circulating in these pop performances are dependent on racial hierarchy for their efficacy. Using a critical semiotics approach, the aim of this dissertation is to contribute to the bigger project of decolonial feminism by cutting through the feminist alibi that allows feminism to serve as a cover story for the cultural reproduction of whiteness and racial hierarchy.

This chapter seeks to explore how cultural texts disseminated online are made and remade, challenged and championed by audiences, with the mutability inherent to all texts becoming highly visible in this environment. The entry point of this inquiry is the music video accompanying Beyoncé Knowles’s 2008 hit Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It), which quickly became an Internet phenomenon, spawning numerous homages, parodies, and reinterpretations. Additionally, this popular cultural phenomenon was the subject of a social media scandal invoking issues of racism, “authenticity,” appropriation, the democratization of technology, and “expert knowledge.” This chapter will touch on a few key moments of online engagement with this event in order to try to flesh out the tangled politics inherent in cultural consumption, participation, and online identity building.
Putting Identity on Hold: Motion Capture and the Mystery of the Disappearing Blackness*

The movement of black bodies has often been captured by motion-tracking/sensing technologies in different contexts and situations, from animation cinema to facial recognition, from art to police preemptive profiling. As often argued by critical and media theorists, digital technologies of this kind operate an interesting ambiguous datafication of the black body, by filtering data along a subtle and shifting border between the invisibility of the captured body and the visibility of its movement. This article will discuss the motion capture of Savion Glover’s tap dance performance for the animation movie Happy Feet. Performative Wokeness/White Victimhood: The Hypocrisy of Celebrity Villainization of Paparazzi

This commentary contrasts the gender and racial politics of celebrity input on the current uprising in comparison with the gender and racial politics in celebrity media production. On June 11, 2020, a video of an all-white cast of celebrities vowing to “take responsibility” for racism was released. It garnered millions of views within hours. Such exhibitions of white celebrity solidarity and empathy in response to the current uprising contrast deeply with exhibitions of white victimhood within the context of the Hollywood-Industrial Complex, even by the very celebrities featured in the video. For example, Kristen Bell, who is featured in the video, has been a leader in anti-paparazzi initiatives in California, thus targeting and criminalizing the work of paparazzi photographers, who my work has shown are predominantly Latinx. Bell was an outspoken advocate for a California law that made photographing a person’s child “because of that person’s employment” punishable by up to one year in prison. In her comments in support of the law she repeatedly used the term “pedorazzi” to describe paparazzi photographers, thus insinuating that non-consensual pictures of her children are akin to their sexual molestation. Jennifer Garner similarly testified before the California State Assembly in support of the anti-paparazzi laws, using highly racialized language to describe the photographers. She stated in tears, “Large, aggressive men swarm us…I don’t want a gang of shouting, arguing, law-breaking photographers to camp out everywhere we are.” This commentary will juxtapose the self-righteous performance of white celebrity "wokeness" with their own practice of racial aggression toward the laborers who work at the bottom of the Hollywood hierarchy. Ultimately this commentary will be a critical look at celebrity involvement in social justice that underscores their will to ignore their own involvement in systematic oppression, racism, and racialized violence.
Miley Cyrus, the black mask and the white body
White female artist, in contemporary pop music, tend to appropriate black culture in order to gain sexual liberation. The paper discusses the topic with the case of Miley Cyrus, who made use of a black face for sexual liberation and later reverted to the image of innocent white femininity.
"Nothing to It": Masquerade and the Contests of Authenticity for Women in Popular Music
This paper addresses the ambiguous notion of ‘authenticity,’ the contests of which saturate musical discourse in North American pop culture, and finds a gendered double standard at work. In the criticism of female artists such as Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Nicki Minaj as being inauthentic is a disapproval of women in control; women who are in control of their image and ostentatious in their aesthetic expressions are deemed inauthentic in a way that does not hold for male artists. It seems that as a society we hold women in music to a different standard wherein we tarnish their artistic credibility by calling them ‘inauthentic’ when they cross the threshold of how conscious of or (in)vested in their appearance we deem they should be. In their book The Sex Revolts (1995), Joy Press and Simon Reynolds distinguish between two strategies, masquerade and flux, for female rebellion and participation in rock music on the basis of authenticity. Taking issue with their unexamined deployment of authenticity to exalt the model of flux and condemn the model of masquerade, this paper finds Press and Reynolds to be championing a strategy of ‘authenticity’ that uncritically reinforces harmful gender essentialism and reflects the problematic ideology of authenticity that permeates pop culture. In contrast to Press and Reynolds, Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble interrogates the notion of authenticity in terms of the performance of gender with special attention given to masquerade. Via Lacan, Butler presents two different ways of critically engaging with masquerade, one which reinforces the ideology of authenticity (and mapping onto which I find Press and Reynolds’ account), and one which has the potential to displace it. This latter understanding would phase out contests of authenticity, leaving room for more compelling ways of analyzing music artists and their performances to emerge.
Sexualisation, or the queer feminist provocations of Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus has increasingly occupied debates at the centre of feminist engagements with popular culture. Evoking concerns around young women and ‘sexualisation’, Cyrus emerges as a convergent signifier of sexualised media content and the girl-at-risk. As Cyrus is repeatedly invoked in these debates, she comes to function as the bad object of young femininity. Arguing, however, that Cyrus troubles the sexualisation thesis in the provocations of her creative practice, I suggest that this contested media figure exceeds the frames through which she is read. Thus, I ask: what kinds of insights might be possible if we were to transform the terms on which we approach this figure? Considering a selection of the images and performances that constitute the Cyrus archive, this article proposes a reading of Cyrus as performative provocation. Mobilising an existing sensibility of queer feminist struggle, Cyrus emerges as a disruptive, albeit contradictory, figure. Questions of privilege, limit and possibility emerge in this discussion, as well as what constitutes feminist struggle.

George Brandt's Grounded (2013). By reframing the use-value of surveillance technologies within formal and informal performance spaces, surveillance artists employ what Jill Dolan writing about a determining "male gaze" in dominant forms of visual culture identi ed as materialist performance tactics that "denaturalize the psychological identi cation processes implicit in representation," so that, "when the representational apparatus is foregrounded, its once mysti ed ideology becomes clear" (Dolan 1988, 14-15). In so doing, surveillance art works encourage a critical spectatorship towards the disciplinary gaze of dominant surveillance.
