Users' Perception About E-books in India

This paper aims to study the users' understanding and acceptance of e-books in India. This study was carried out by conducting a survey using questionnaire as a tool to find out users' views on using e-books as compared to printed documents. This study was carried out during the period of January to March 2006 covering a wide range of ages, subject backgrounds, computer experience, occupations, and comfort in using computers in their daily life. The readers survey found that Indians are generally willing to use and read e-books though they continue to prefer and use printed publications. Generally, the users are aware of the advantages and limitations of each medium and will tailor their choice according to their needs. Of the total, slightly less than half of the users (41 %) are ready to pay the same or slightly lesser price as compared to printed publications, 24 per cent are half or quarter the price of printed publications.

Users’ Perceptions of E-books at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi : A Case Study

The collection development policies of university libraries are driven by the information seeking behaviour and extent of use of resources by students, researchers and teachers. Libraries have introduced e-books in their collections with rising demand of users for them. However, e-books have not gained the perceived acceptance among users. It is essential to understand the gaps in preferences and experiences of users of e-books in academic libraries so that the collections of e-books can be customised to meet the users’ preferences. The purpose of this study is to understand how students, teachers and research scholars access, browse and use e-books in Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, India. The study has identified factors that encourage or discourage the use of e-books in academic libraries. It highlights preferences for the format (electronic/print) while perusing books as textbooks or reference books for research.

The focal point for this paper is to explore Indian Library Professionals 'use of smartphones apps' for supporting library operations. A survey conducted using a questionnaire method with a response of 229 library professionals to examine the integration of mobile apps in the library and for its services. Survey results showed that while the library professionals used already available apps in the store for supporting library operations, self- built apps for the libraries found meagre (11.80%). Through these apps, they offer services like membership, book renewal, SMS alert, e-resources and reference query services. The study also found the novel use of social media apps like WhatsApp (69.43%), Facebook (66.37%) and YouTube (65.93%) for supporting library operations like live streaming, reference advisory and information sharing. Use of Mobile Devices by Library and Information Science Students in Central Universities of Uttar Pradesh

This paper provides an insight of actual use of mobile devices by into LIS students' in everyday life and their perceptions regarding the usefulness and effectiveness of mobile phones for academic purpose in Central universities in Uttar Pradesh state, India. The findings of the study reveal that most of the respondents use mobile devices daily for more than 3 hours. Smart phone is the most used mobile device. Respondents use productivity tools on their mobile device for creating documents. Gmail app, Whatsapp, google app, adobe reader and PDF viewer are the most frequently used mobile apps. Most of the respondents access Library Website through their mobile device and only 1.96% are accessing e-books from their mobile device. Major barriers found are: use of mobile devices for academic learning in the poor network coverage, high charging data plans, slow load time and lack of Internet speed. The findings of the study will not only guide LIS students in effective use of mobile devices for academic purposes, but will also help mobile manufactures, university authorities, librarians in exploring mobile devices adoption and usage among the respondents.

Awareness, Use, and Implementation of Mobile Apps in Indian Libraries

The rapid transition of technology and storming fast internet has led to an enormous growth in the number of smartphone users in the country. The main aim of this paper is to investigate how library professional in India use smartphone and apps for carrying out library activities. An online questionnaire survey involving 107 library professionals was conducted to collect data and the survey result showed that even entire professionals have smartphone, the apps usage found less especially those which aid the library activities. The skills of the library professionals got a positive impact by the use of apps even though there were impediments to effective use which need to be solved. The sporadic technological updates demand the professionals to get update themselves. The study concludes that M-technology would have bigger opportunities in libraries especially in the proper dissemination of information with least cost & time.

Availability and Usage of E-Books at Aligarh Muslim University: Researchers' Viewpoint

The paper seeks to examine the awareness and usage of e-books among the research scholars of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. It highlights the usage of e-books among the research community as well as the awareness about the e-books. The present study was carried out by conducting a survey using questionnaire method. The study explores about the availability of e-books in the Library for the research community. It reveals the factors which affects the access and usage of e-books. The paper examines the satisfaction level of the users about the facilities provided by the Library to access and download the e-books. The study may be very useful for those interested in exploring the e-book models or wish to buy the collections and then assess the return on investment.

E-book Culture at Rajshahi University Students in Bangladesh

In the era of Information and Communication Technology, E-books are the blessing for the present world and it has drawn worldwide popularity besides the printed books among the readers. This paper aims at identifying the usage of Ebooks among the science and engineering faculty students at Rajshahi University, Bangladesh. A total of 150 respondents were chosen randomly and distributed with a structured questionnaire where 141 respondents returned the questionnaire. Simple percentage calculations were used to analyze data. The study finds that 100% of the surveyed students used E-books. Most of students used E-books by Laptop and Smartphone by borrowing from friends and accessing central library databases for improving and gaining knowledge of research and course work in the department. However, most of the students mentioned that they prefer printed books to E-books. Majority of the students agreed that the library should enrich the collections of Ebooks as well as the users and library professionals should be properly trained up Rajshahi University.

Mobile reading habit in the digital era: a case study of Under Graduate Students, Tripura, India

Purpose: The study was carried out with an aim to understand the mobile reading behaviour among the millennials of the state of Tripura. Methodology: The questionnaire having 35 questions was administered to 120 under graduate students of different departments from Govt. Degree College, Khumulwng and Ramakrishna Mahavidyalay. Out of 120 students, 82 have responded from Govt. Degree College, Khumulwng and the response rate is 68%. Out of 120 students, 80 have responded from Ramakrishna Mahavidyalay and the response rate is 66.66%. Results: The study revealed that highest number of respondents from Govt. Degree College, Khumulwng belongs to Female 53 (64.63%) and from Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya belongs to male category 64 (80.00%). maximum respondents from both the colleges belong to rural area. Maximum respondents from both the colleges use phone for 1-3 and 3 -5 hours in a day. From Govt. Maximum respondents from both the colleges read news in their phones. Maximum respondents accepted the fact that they read more after they have become mobile readers. Maximum respondents look for word meanings in their phones, uses dictionary app and prefer English language for mobile reading. From Govt Degree College, Khumulwng 43.9% respondents are aware of Ebook and from Ramakrishna Mahavidyalaya respondents 76.25% are aware of E-book. From Govt. Degree College, Khumulwng 58.54% respondents have never used any E-book and from Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya 65% respondents have never used any E-book followed by 35% used E-book. Maximum respondents from both the colleges want E- book services from their respected libraries. Implications: The knowledge acquired through this study should contribute to better understanding of the phenomena of reading habits, mobile reading habits and attitude towards it in Tripura. Patrons’ usage and attitude on electronic books: a study

This paper reports the patrons’ usage, attitudes on electronic books. A self-developed online questionnaire was used for data collection from Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and Faculty members at Institute of Financial Management and Research (IFMR), Sri City. Out of 410 individual population, 319 were responded this survey. The findings revealed that 34.17 percent of respondents visit the library once in a week. Majority of these respondents visit for photocopy and printing purposes also preferred electronic books to exams, job placement and academic quiz purposes. 63.64 percent of the respondents feel that print books will continue along with electronic books.
