Kinematic Analysis of the Basketball Free Throw in Preparation Phase of Elite Athletes
International Journal of Human Movement and Sports Sciences, 2021
The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinematic parameters of the body for the preparation phase of the free throw to improve the efficiency and sport performances. The study includes a total twenty elite basketball players from the Kosovo Super League teams: K.B. Prishtina, K.B. Kerasani and K.B. Lipljan. Basketball shooting measurements were conducted during the training of the 2018 year. Filming of the basketball shooting techniques is done with three Canon HD cameras, set at 90-degree angles, which can reproduce sixty pictures per second. 12 variables of kinematic parameters of body were selected for analysis. Only one successful shot from each player was taken for analysis. Analysis is done with Kinematic Analysis System (APAS), outputting the required results and values of the kinematic indicators. The data collected were processed by statistical analysis software "IBM SPSS 20", and statistical parameters were determined using the methods: arithmetic mean, standard deviation, minimum score, maximum score, Skewness and Kurtosis. The confirmation of the mutual influence of the variables was done by the Pearson's coefficients correlation method. The findings of this study show that in the preparation phase for a free throw shot in basketball, variables such as knee angle, wrist angle, thigh angle, and elbow angle have shown to be the kinematic parameters that have the greatest impact on finalizing a successful free throw in basketball. The scientific contribution of this research also provides new insights into the optimal model of basketball player performance during free-throw.
Relationship of Kinematic Variables with the Performance of Basketballplayers in Lay-Up Shot
Citius Altius Fortius, 2009
The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between selected kinematic variables and performance of lay-up shots. Five (N=5) male basketball players who represented Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, were selected as subjects for the study. The help of digital photography was used to film the subjects in sagittal plane of lay-up shot. Joint point method was used in order to obtain the values of selected angular kinematic variables from developed stick figures. Height of center of Gravity was calculated by segmentation method. The performance in Lay-Up Shot was recorded by the scores in Lay-Up Shot, which was obtained by using a three point scale by the three judges. To determine the degree of relationship between selected kinematic variables with the performance in Layup Shot, Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Method was used. The results have shown the insignificant values of coefficient of correlation incase of all the selected kinematic variables and significant relationship between the height of center of gravity at the moment of release with the performance of the subjects in lay-up shots.
Kinematic Differences Between Proficient and Non-Proficient Free Throw Shooters – Video Analysis
Journal of Applied Sports Sciences, 2021
Despite its importance and signifi cant contribution to the fi nal game outcome, the free throw shooting motion is greatly understudied. The purpose of this study was to examine kinematic differences between profi cient and non-profi cient free throw shooters and to determine which variables have the greatest impact on successful free throw shooting performance. Thirteen healthy recreationally active males volunteered to participate in this study. Each participant shot three sets of ten consecutive free throws from the regulation distance from the basket. Each set was performed under 3 minutes with 1-2-minute rest between each set. A high-defi nition camera recording at 30 fps captured the free throw shooting motion from a sagittal point of view. Video analysis software was used to analyze the following kinematic variables: knee angle, elbow angle, hip fl exion, ankle fl exion, release angle, shoulder angle, hand release height, and elbow height. The fi ndings of this study suggest that lower elbow positioning infl uenced by greater knee, ankle, and hip fl exion during the preparatory phase of the shooting motion may lead to improvements in free throw shooting accuracy. Moreover, greater ball release height and release angle, as previously suggested, could decrease the margin of error and enhance free throw shooting performance. By using these kinematic variables to create the discriminant function projection model, it is plausible that profi cient free throw shooters can be accurately classifi ed in 94% of cases.
Biomechanical Analysis of Ball Trajectory Direction in Free Throw
Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Education Social Sciences and Humanities (ICESSHum 2019), 2019
Basketball game is decided by the most point counted from successful shooting. Moreover, free throw is one of many shooting techniques which is frequently used in basketball game. So, the aims of this research are reviewing the ball trajectory direction to find the formula to increase possibility of successful shooting and decrease shooting error possibility. This is a quantitative study with independent t-test data analysis by SPSS. There are 73 male college physical education students(age : 20 1.2 years) who were categorized based on their height in to 5 groups. Each of them tried to make 3 successful free throw. The result, there are significant different of ball direction, launching angle, maximum elevation, and ball velocity among different height group (< 0.05). In the conclusion, the launching angle and maximum elevation among different height group has different characteristic. However, the ball direction and velocity have more similarities among different height group.
Key Kinematic Components for Optimal Basketball Free Throw Shooting Performance
Central European Journal of Sport Sciences and Medicine, 2021
The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in five kinematic variables (internal knee and elbow angles, elbow height, forearm angle from vertical, and shoulder flexion angle at ball release) between proficient and non-proficient free throw shooters and which variables had the greatest contributions to a successful free throw shooting outcome. Seventeen male basketball players shoot three sets of 10 free throws with a two-minute break between each set. A three-dimensional motion tracking system composed of 17 sensors sampling at 60 Hz was used for data collection. Proficient free throw shooters had greater knee and elbow flexion, lower elbow height, and a smaller forearm angle compared to non-proficient shooters. These results explained 89.5% of the total variance. While maintaining the optimal range of these kinematic variables allows each subject to reach an appropriate level of free throw shooting performance, the key variable capable of distinguishing between made and missed shots within the proficient group of shooters was the forearm angle. Positioning the forearm parallel, or close to parallel, with an imaginary vertical line during the preparatory phase of the shooting motion accounted for 23.9% of the total variance and was associated with a greater number of made shots.
Kinematic Parameters of Jump Shot in Elite Male Basketball Players
Facta Universitatis, Series: Physical Education and Sport
The primary aim of this study was to determine kinematic parameters of jump shot in elite male basketball players, by analyzing the release time for shooting, the angle of entry, and ball spin and. The secondary aim of this study was to examine possible differences in these kinematic parameters among the players associated with their playing position. Eighteen male basketball players (7 guards, 8 forwards, 3 centers) from six Serbian senior teams were tested. 94Fifty basketball sensor was used to obtain the following kinematic parameters of jump shot). The highest average measured values of shot release time were found in centres (1.23±0.23 s) and the lowest in guards (1.07±0.28 s), although these differences were not statistically significant. Further, centres had a lower angle of entry (36.6±2.08°) than guards (40.54±4.76°) and forwards (42.05±3.77°). The highest value of backspin was obtained by forwards (130±11.91 rotations / min). There were no significant differences between g...
A Kinematic Analysis of the Basketball Shot Performed with Different Ball Sizes
Applied Sciences
In youth basketball, the ball’s size is adapted to fit the participants’ physical capacities and improve the development of manipulative skills. The current study compared the kinematic parameters of the basketball shot (BS) performed with two different ball sizes. Twenty-seven adolescent females aged 12.1 ± 0.9 years (height: 153.3 ± 8.0 cm; body mass: 48.8 ± 12.8 kg) completed 10 BS trials from a frontal position at 5.75 m from the basket with two ball sizes: a smaller and lighter ball (size five, 480 g) and the standard ball size for their age (size six, 566 g). No statistically significant differences were observed for ball release variables or efficacy levels. Significantly greater shoulder flexion was detected at release while shooting with a size six ball (F = 2.982, p ≤ 0.01). The shoulder’s angular velocity at release was significantly lower while performing with a size six ball (F = 3.089, p ≤ 0.01). No significant differences were found for the elbow or knee angles or ang...

Original Article Physical factors play an important role in basketball free throw shooting success. This study aims to analyze the factors associated with success when shooting from different positions. Twenty-four college basketball players were assessed for upper extremity length, muscle strength, vertical jump height and reaction time, and hand reaction time. Five shooting positions (A-E) were located 4.54 m from the basket at angles of 45 around a semicircle. Shooting success was recorded as a percentage. The relationships between variables were analyzed with Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis was performed to determine the contributions of the assessed physical factors to shooting success. The following factors contributed to the success rate: hand length, left palmar grip strength and left hand reaction time from A; left palmar grip strength, left shoulder extensor strength and vertical jump reaction time from B; left elbow extensor strength and left hand reaction time from C; right wrist extensor strength, body mass index, left shoulder external rotator strength, and left hand reaction time from D; and forearm length, left elbow extensor strength, and left wrist extensor strength from E position. Left elbow extensor strength, left hand reaction time, and vertical jump reaction time contributed to the total free throw success rate. These results of this pilot study demonstrated the important relationships between upper extremity extensor strength, grip strength, vertical jump reaction time, hand reaction time, and free throw success.
