Robert L. Carneiro (1981) has forwarded and defended (e.g., 2003, 2010a, 2010b) the thesis that a chiefdom is the necessary precursor of the state, and has published an influential evolutionary theory (1970) accounting for the rise of chiefdoms and states, with warfare as a prime mover. Discuss
