Gummy Smile Correction with Diode Laser: Two Case Reports
Journal of international oral health : JIOH, 2015
Beautification of smiles is becoming an everyday requirement in dental practice. Apart from teeth, gingiva also plays an important role in smile esthetics. Excessive visualization of gingiva is a common complaint among patients seeking esthetic treatment. A wide variety of procedures are available for correction of excessive gum display based on the cause of the condition. Soft tissue diode laser contouring of gingiva is a common procedure that can be undertaken in a routine dental setting with excellent patient satisfaction and minimal post-operative sequale. Two cases of esthetic crown lengthening with diode laser 810 nm are presented here.
Modified Lip Repositioning: A Conservative Approach to Treat the Gummy Smile: A Case Report
Journal of Research and Advancement in Dentistry, 2020
Background: Unesthetic gummy smile or "Excessive Gingival Display" is a frequent finding among the population that can occur because of various intraoral or extraoral etiologies. This clinical report describes a successful surgical coverage obtained by modified lip repositioning, thus surgically treating gummy smile. The procedure restricts the muscle pull of the elevator lip muscles by shortening the vestibule, thus reducing the gingival display while smiling. The technique is performed by removing two strips of mucosa from maxillary buccal vestibule on both the sides leaving the frenum untouched and creating a partial thickness flap between mucogingival junction and upper lip musculature, and suturing the lip mucosa with mucogingival junction, thereby reducing gingival display. This technique is different from the conventional surgical lip repositioning as labial frenum is left untouched over here as it helps in maintaining the lip symmetry therefore reduces postoperative morbidity.
Lip repositioning, an alternative treatment of gummy smile - A case report
Journal of oral biology and craniofacial research
The aim of present case report is to discuss surgical lip repositioning technique for the management of excessive gingival display related with vertical maxillary excess and increase mobility of the upper lip. By restricting the muscle pull by elevator lip muscles, this procedure reduces excessive gingival display during smiling. For patient, this procedure is safe, less invasive with minimal side effects and an alternative to orthognathic surgery in the correction of gummy smile.

Delayed passive eruption is conventionally treated with osteotomy and osteoplasty, which is limited to the vicinity of cementoenamel junction. The aim of the present study was to evaluate clinical outcome of three gummy smile patients with delayed passive eruption submitted to an extended osteoplasty in the buccal aspect of anterior maxilla. Digital photograph images of maximal smile were taken in order to assess the results before and 9 months after surgery. All maxillary incisors were evaluated. In comparison with baseline, all patients presented lip dropping (calculated in 7.9 ± 1.7%), increase in crown length (18.2 ± 2.7%), and a decrease in the gingival display (46.6 ± 2.7%). On the other hand, considering specifically the decrease in gingival display, 19.7 ± 3.8% of it was due to the amount of lip dropping, while 26.9 ± 1.2% was due to the increase in crown length. Within the limits of the present study, it could be concluded that after the extended osteoplasty, upper lip has ...
Surgical Correction of Gummy Smile by Lip Repositioning with Myotomy Technique: A Clinical Report
2018
Excessive gingival display can result in compromised esthetics and poor patient appearance. It can be managed by a variety of treatment modalities, depending upon the etiological factor responsible for it. This case report demonstrates the successful management of excessive gingival display with a lip-repositioning procedure with myotomy technique. The surgery was done by removing a strip of mucosa from the maxillary buccal vestibule, and then dissecting the muscle fibre attachment and finally suturing the lip mucosa atthe mucogingival line. This technique is an alternative to invasive surgical techniques and it is a useful adjunct to reduce the chances of relapse and improve patient satisfaction.
LipStaT® Surgery, A Novel Technique for the Treatment of Gummy Smile: Case Report
Acta Odontológica Colombiana
Introduction: The lip stabilization technique (LipStaT®) is a novel surgical approach for the management of gummy smile. It is an outpatient technique, minimally invasive, with low risk of morbidity and low incidence of complications. The goal of the technique is to reduce the excessive gingival display during smile. Objective: to describe the LipStaT® technique including its indications, preoperative evaluation, surgical approach and patient post procedure care instructions. Clinical Cases: the authors present two female patients, aged 20 and 31 years, with excessive gingival display (over 3mm) and with experiences of failures with other procedures. The LipStaT® technique allowed to achieve aesthetic, harmonic and functional results. Conclusion: The LipStaT® technique is a safe outpatient procedure that allows to obtain predictable results, which are well accepted by patients.
A Cosmetic Technique Called Lip Repositioning in Patient of Excessive Gingival Display
European Journal of Inflammation
Excessive gingival display can be managed by a variety of treatment modalities, depending on the specific diagnosis. A 29-year old woman was referred to the Unit of Oral Surgery of the University of Chieti-Pescara by her dentist for a consultation regarding a gummy smile. A partial-thickness dissection was made. The epithelium and connective tissue was excised. Tissue tags were removed. The mucosal flap was advanced and sutured at the mucogingival junction using 5-0 polypropylene sutures and 4.0 chromic gut sutures. No periodontal dressing was placed. Postoperative instructions included recommendations for limited facial movements, no brushing around the surgical site for 14 days, and placing ice packs over the upper lip. This treatment modality was effective, producing esthetically acceptable smiles in these patients. This case report demonstrates the successful management of excessive gingival display with a lip-repositioning procedure.
Modifying Gummy Smile: A Minimally Invasive Approach
The Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice, 2014
Aim Excessive gingival display is a problem that can be managed by variety of procedures. These procedures include non-surgical and surgical methods. The underlying cause of gummy smile can affect the type of procedure to be selected. Most patients prefer minimally invasive procedures with outstanding results. The authors describe a minimally invasive lip repositioning technique for management of gummy smile. Materials and methods Twelve patients (10 females, 2 males) with gingival display of 4 mm or more were operated under local anesthesia using a modified lip repositioning technique. Patients were followed up for 1, 3, 6 and 12 months and gingival display was measured at each follow up visit. The gingival mucosa was dissected and levator labii superioris and depressor septi muscles were freed and repositioned in a lower position. The levator labii superioris muscles were pulled in a lower position using circumdental sutures for 10 days. Both surgeon's and patient's satisf...
Treatment of excessive gingival display using a modified lip repositioning technique
The International journal of periodontics & restorative dentistry
Excessive gingival display during smiling ("gummy smile") is an esthetic issue that affects a considerable part of the population. The hyperactivity of the elevator muscle of the upper lip is one of the main causes of a gummy smile, and several techniques have been proposed for its treatment. The aim of this report is to describe a modification of the lip repositioning technique to achieve stable and significant outcomes through a more conservative procedure. Two patients complaining about a gummy smile were treated with the proposed technique and presented, after a 6-month follow-up, significant improvement in the amount of gingival exposure and esthetic satisfaction. Case Report Surgical Lip Repositioning: A Compelling Procedure to reduce Gingival Display
Excessive gingival display or 'Gummy smile' is an aesthetic concern of an individual, affecting the overall personality. It can be predictably managed by Orthognathic surgery and Orthodontic treatment. The purpose of present article is to report an alternative and comparatively less invasive surgical procedure 'Lip repositioning' to treat 'gummy smile'. This case report discusses a 26 years Indian male patient presented with Excessive gingival display. On examination, dynamic smile was extending from maxillary right first molar to maxillary left first molar, with 4 to 5mm of excessive gingival display with normal maxillary anterior anatomic proportions. A comprehensive treatment plan was made which includes Scaling and Root planing followed by Lip positioning procedure to correct excessive gingival display. The purpose of presenting this case is to describe an alternative treatment modality for treatment of excessive gingival display.
