This article explores some issues that are potentially considered by bus rapid transit (BRT) system passengers when shifting their mode of transport from driving their vehicle to taking the BRT system for the same kind of trip. The issues are explored as part of an attempt to design an appropriate BRT passengers' modal shift evaluation. The BRT passengers' modal shift evaluation is to be carried out to understand how a BRT system may influence urban development around the system and how it may trigger transit-oriented development (TOD) around the system. This article was written through a literature review directed on certain topics, that are BRT ridership-influencing factors, the BRT system passengers' behavior, the built environment condition around BRT systems, the types of transit system passengers and the types of trips carried out utilizing a transit system. It is found that several components of BRT system service quality and several components of the built environment around the system potentially influence the BRT system passengers' consideration when shifting their mode of transport. However, the influence may not be homogenous among all passenger-trips due to the different passengers' backgrounds and the different types of trips carried out utilizing the BRT system.
The Evaluation of Mode Shift Preference within Bus Rapid Transit-oriented Development Context

Bus rapid transit (BRT) has been acknowledged as a mode of transit that is appropriate to be constructed in conjunction with transit-oriented development (TOD). In order to evaluate the occurrence of a TOD with BRT systems as its component, evaluating the passengers’ mode shift triggered by the provision of the BRT systems is one approach that can be taken. Within the mentioned type of TOD, the built environment should support, or even more trigger, the passengers’ mode shift into taking the BRT systems. This article reviews the passengers modal shift triggered by the provision of a bus rapid transit (BRT) system. Passengers modal shift is one of the transit oriented development (TOD) goal. This article was written through literature review processes, that are reviewing TOD goals and principles and reviewing BRT systems impacts that are relevant to TOD goals and principles. It was found that the provision of a number of BRT systems have triggered their passengers modal shift. However, the evidence is still limited, thus the BRT system's modal shift-triggering potential has not been adequately explored. Let alone the characteristics of the systems, passengers and respective cities. This article helps defining the relation between a BRT system and TOD and offers a new approach in planning a TOD and its respective BRT system.

Recently there has been discussions on the role of bus rapid (BRT) transit in transitoriented development (TOD). This article explores a feature of bus rapid transit within the framework of TOD's principle of developing built environment and transit systems that trigger its citizens to shift from using private motorised vehicle to using transit system for daily mobility. This article explores Transjakarta BRT's ability to trigger mode shift from doing other way of travelling to using Transjakarta. This article was written through a descriptive-qualitative research using inductive reasoning. Mode shift data was collected through indirect interview using online questionnaire. Other way of travelling prior to using Transjakarta was asked to Transjakarta passengers. Detailed information regarding the passengers' background and the type of trips the passengers are doing was also gathered. The data was processed using simple statistical analysis and Bartlett's test for distribution variance. This article finds that Transjakarta is able to trigger mode shift among its passengers. Furthermore, Transjakarta is even able to trigger mode shift from using private motorised vehicle to using Transjakarta. The ability to trigger mode shift is relatively homogenous across all groups of Transjakarta passengers. This article proposes an alternate approach in evaluating a rapid transit system within the framework of TOD, that is evaluating its ability in triggering mode shift.

The implementation of a Bus Rapid Transit system (BRT) is a reality in many Brazilian cities. In Belém, where the public transportation system is mainly operated by buses with no integration, BRT is expected to serve: bus users on a larger scale; users of other modes of transportation, such as alternative collective transport system and microbuses; and users of individual modes of transportation, such as cars, taxis and motorcycle taxis. Therefore, it is expected that users change their travel strategies, especially those who are located in the area surrounding the project. This study intends to explore the effects of BRT on townspeople and on public and private transport users regarding their travel strategies. The study is composed of an initial discussion about BRT projects in Brazilian cities and the development of a case concerning the routes, which are part of BRT system in Belém, Pará, Brazil. The investigation involved focus groups in a one-mile radius around the route. A questionnaire was applied using the stated preference technique, with questions about socioeconomic profile, travel standards, inputs related to the current transport system and strategies for current and future travels after the implementation of BRT system. Among the results achieved, BRT was found to cause tremendous impacts on travel strategies of townspeople and public transport users in the surveyed area. Cyclists expect the system to be integrated with the implementation of bicycle racks. In general, the survey has shown that users tend to change their travel strategies and that BRT is positively regarded by public transport users, as something that would improve their urban mobility.

Attraction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for Car and Bike Owners

This study aims to find the potential of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to attract the vehicle owners from their personal vehicles i.e., motorcars and motorcycles. Stated preference survey (questionnaires) and interviews were conducted at BRT (Metro Bus) Stations for the prediction of the individuals shifting from their private vehicles to BRT. Technical characteristics of bus rapid transit (BRT) systems that influence urban development
This dissertation explores the relation between bus rapid transit (BRT) technical characteristics and influence on urban development. It includes a comprehensive knowledge in terms of BRT technical characteristics and performance. Explanation in terms of the influence of Boston Silver Line 4 and 5 and Seoul BRT systems on urban development around the systems is used as case studies. Analysis on the technical characteristics of and investigation on the performance of Boston Silver Line 4 and 5 and Seoul BRT systems are provided. The analysis on the technical characteristics of the BRT systems includes analysis in terms of the station configuration and accessibility, vehicle capacity and accessibility, segregated right of way, off-board ticketing and network width and transit network integration. The technical characteristics of the BRT systems are analysed in regard to their positive contribution towards the patronage, vehicle average speed and passengers per hour per direction (pphpd) figure of the BRT systems. The investigation on the performance of the BRT systems includes investigation in terms of the maximum and average pphpd figure of the BRT systems. This dissertation shows that BRT systems that influence urban development have technical characteristics which enable the BRT systems to have high performance. However, it is unclear whether or not these technical characteristics make BRT systems influence urban development by making the systems have high performance.
