Efficacy of life skills training on increase of mental health and self esteem of the students

The aim of this study is to achieve to effects of life skills training on providing mental health and self esteem of university students. The study method was experimental research method. The type of design was before-after test design with control group. Statistical society of the present study comprised all boys' students accepting at 2009 and studying at University of Mohaghegh Ardabili in 2009. Also, this study was conducted only on the individuals who gained 28 or more in DASS questionnaire (which evaluates three subscales of anxiety, depression, and stress), (n=210). At the next stage the needed sample (i.e. 40 boy students {20 individuals in control group and 20 individuals in experimental group}) was selected randomly and distributed in two mentioned groups, randomly. Then, life skills were taught to experimental group for 8 sessions in four week) and no variable was exposed to control group during this period. At the end, 3 individuals from experimental group were omitted; finally the achieved data from 37 individuals was analyzed by descriptive statistics methods (frequently and percentage) as well as inferential statistics methods (independent t test, MANOVA). The results showed that life skills training affects on decreasing mental disorders symptoms especially anxiety, depression and stress of students suspected to the mental disorder. This study showed that life skills training is a good method in decreasing mental disorders symptoms among the students suspected to the mental disorder.

The Assessment of Self-Esteem in Addicted Women

Background: Self-esteem is the level of respect which an individual pays to himself and his identity. Having healthy self-esteem is a fundamental need for human beings and lack of it may have some consequences. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine and compare the level of self-esteem among female addicts with normal control group. Patients and Methods: The study is an analytical cross-sectional study. The present study was conducted on three groups: imprisoned addicted women, addicted women in the society visiting welfare associations who did not have a background of imprisonment, and a control group including non-addicts who did not have the records of imprisonment and visiting health care centers to receive consultation services. Validated Persian version of the Rosenbergs self-esteem scale was used in this study. The Chi-square test, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used. Results: The mean age of participants was not statistically different in three groups (P = 0.75) but the other variables (i.e. level of education, job, location of living, and marital status) show significant statistical difference (P = 0.001).The mean score of self-esteem in the group of imprisoned addicts, addicts and control groups were respectively 14.87 ± 4.70, 15.16 ± 4.71, and 22.90 ± 5.06. The mean score in the control group is significantly higher than addict group (Chi-square = 74.97, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Lower level of self-steem should be considered as an important factor for tendency for drug abuse.

A study to develop and evaluate a need-based curriculum on addiction for students of madrasahs in a rural block of Hooghly district, West Bengal

Background: Tobacco smoking habit is imbibed at a very early stage of life and once it is taken up it becomes very difficult to give up. In fact the vast majority of tobacco users worldwide begin the use of tobacco during adolescence. Objective of the study was to develop and evaluate a need-based training curriculum on healthy life style in terms of addiction for Madrasah students of rural West Bengal.Methods: It was a school-based health educational intervention study in rural area of Hooghly district, West Bengal among 189 Madrasahs students.Results: The mean pre-test knowledge score in study Madrasah was 6.06±2.69 and post test score was 10.83±1.69. The calculated t-value was 24.06 and p value was 0.00 with effect size 2.12 (Cohen’s D). Health related quality of life and self esteem of substance users in Bangladesh

This study explored health related quality of life (HRQoL) of substance users (SUs) in Bangladesh in comparison with healthy control groups (CGs). Additionally, role of self esteem and sex on HRQoL was investigated. A trained assistant counselling psychologist measured HRQoL and self‐esteem of 120 SUs and 120 CGs using SF‐36 questionnaire and Rosenberg Self Esteem scale, respectively. SUs were mostly male (79.2%) from middle socioeconomic class (94%). SUs scored poorer in all domains of SF‐36 than the CGs. The magnitude of the effect size was largest for the role physical (effect size = –0.79), general mental health (effect size = –0.76) and social functioning (effect size = –0.73) subscale. Overall mental health was lower than physical health (effect size = –0.897). Males in both groups were better in four sub‐scales while females reported less role limitation due to physical and emotional problems. The present study has been undertaken to instigate the variance explained by locus of control with respect to selfesteem among young drug abusers and non abusers. Youth is the most vulnerable section of the society that is at higher risk of becoming drug addictive. It is a time period in which they are at delicate age of their life and show higher risk taking behavior. The Effect of Life Skills Training on Students' Mental Health and Self-Esteem

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of life skills training on mental health and self-esteem of seventh year female students in Sabzevar. The method of the present study was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design with a control group. A total of 40 female students in one of Sabzevar schools were selected by simple random sampling and were divided into two experimental and control groups (30 students in each group). The instruments used were the Coldberg Mental Health Test, the Cooper-Smith Self-Esteem Test, and a practical guide to life skills training. Independent group t-test was used to analyze the data. Findings showed that significance level (Sig) values are less than 0.05, so there is a significant difference between life skills training and mental health and self-esteem of students. According to the research results, paying attention to life skills training has an effect on students' mental health and selfesteem. A life skills intervention aimed at changing attitudes of Indian youth towards alcohol and drug abuse

Background The misuse of ilicit drugs has become a very significant and challenging problem, worldwide. There has been significant increase in crime and violence across the world which may be associated with the illegal production and distribution of illicit drugs. According to a UN report, the number of people dependent on drugs in India is on the increase, indicating very difficult challenges ahead. Aims The present study explores the effectiveness of a life skills intervention to change the attitudes of youth towards alcohol and drug abuse, in the Punjab state of India. Methods A quasi-experimental design of research was used to conduct the study among a sample of 1000 firstyear college students from 6 randomly selected districts of Punjab, India. The scales used for measuring the attitudes of college students towards alcohol and drug abuse were developed for the purpose of this study. Conclusions The results of analysis of covariance revealed that life skills training had a significant effect on changing attitudes towards alcohol and drug abuse, among study participants. The findings from this study suggest that the introduction of appropriate life skills programs within institutes of higher education in India, could significantly improve the attitude of youngsters towards the misuse of illicit drugs. The influence of coping skills training and family health education on self-esteem among adolescents in substance abuse prevention

Objective: Substance abuse is one of the most serious problems in Indonesia and is highly prevalent among adolescents. Therefore, psychotherapy is needed in preventing substance abuse for adolescents. This study aims to analyze the influence of coping skills training and family health education on self-esteem in a sample of 87 young people. Method: The sample was divided into two groups using simple random sampling. ANOVA was used to determine differences between the control group and those receiving coping skills training and family health education. Results: Self-esteem improved significantly in the group that received the experimental training (F(1.85) = 44.70, p < 0.001). Some practical implications can be deduced for psychiatric nurses to implemented coping skill training and family health education as a standard treatment in substance abuse prevention among adolescents.

Life Skills Training and Students Mental Health The Effect of Life Skills Training on Mental Health of Iranian Middle School Students: A Preliminary Study

Objective: This research aimed to study the effect of life skill training on mental health of Iranian middle school students. Method: This experimental study was conducted In 2015 on 100 students of city of Ghaemshahr (North of Iran), who were randomly selected and divided into two equal groups of intervention (n = 50) and control (n = 50). Qualified trainers provided eight sessions (two sessions a week for 2 hours) of life skills training to the intervention group for one month. The control group did not participate in any training sessions during the same period. Mental health in both groups was assessed by a questionnaire pre-and post-training. Data were analyzed using descriptive and infernal (ANCOVA and paired t-test) statistic tests. Results: The average age of the participants in both groups was 13.5±1.01. ANCOVA test results revealed that the average score of violence, addiction, stress and sensation-seeking before and after the training was statistically significant in the intervention group and control groups (p<0.001). Conclusion: Life skills training had positive effects on mental health of the participants. Given the importance of mental health in modern societies, it is necessary for schools to incorporate life skills in their curriculum to support the mental health of adolescents.
